I'm 20, and I don't think SMB3 can really compete. When you take away the fact that it was released something like 20 years ago (so obviously I didn't play it upon release ), it's just not on the same level. Which game had the greater impact? Well obviously SMB3... but that's no way to compare, as these days it's practically impossible for a new Mario Bros game to have that kind of impact. What NSMBW does is takes everything that was great about the older games and improves upon them. Brings them up to the sort of standard we now expect in 2009. I think many of the older gamers are likely to be more biased if anything, as they're going to base their opinion of the game on the fond memories from their childhood.
It's like when people compare the likes of Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver etc. to Roger Federer. I think anyone in their right mind can see that Federer is the better player. That doesn't take anything away from the achievements of the others. But if you're comparing who, side by side, is actually the better player, then taking time period into account is little more than an excuse. Most things will improve with time, and if they're better, then they're better. Full stop. Sonic is one of the exceptions .
HDTVs may not have had the historical impact of the first TVs but they're better. They wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for the earliest models. But so what? How does that affect in any way whatsoever which is better?
Which is harder? Having played through both I would say SMB3 barely. But only because of the controls...
None of that really matters though because I love both games for what they are/were.
I don't know, the raccoon suit is clearly superior to the propeller suit - better flying ability and the ability to float after every jump. Of course the propeller's ability to instantly pull you upward is nice as well, but it's a lot easier to bounce off of enemies when you can float to them.
Also, NSMBW borrowed a lot from SMB3 and SMW, so it's not really that innovative. Then again, it is very colorful, the music is upbeat, and rotating candy-colored platforms just put a smile on your face.
Arggh why make us choose, this is unfair! Okay, if someone asked me whether they should get SMB3 or NSMBW, having never played a Mario game before, I suppose I would direct them to the latter. But I'm still biased towards 3 because I've played and replayed it for so long. Oh yeah, and the Raccoon suit makes everything easier.
Again, back to the movie comparison- Would you say Finding Nemo is a better animated movie than Beauty and the Beast or some other old Disney classic? It's possible kids today may enjoy the newer stuff better, but that doesn't mean it is truly a superior movie. That doesn't mean that new can't be better either.... there are plenty of examples where the opposite is true. Heck, look at the Batman films.
Got NSMBW on release day in europe (yesterday). I just beat mid-castle of World 3. I am loving it!!! It's so f-ing hard, that I am coursing all the time!!!
World 2 is already as hard as World 7 in SMB 3. Definatly the 2nd hardest Mario game after SMB 2 (jap)!!!
Finally Nintendo gave us a hard Mario game again!!! huuuuuuuuurray
Penguin suit is pretty fun. I think the moving coins, blocks are a fantastic idea and the rotating platforms add alot to the gameplay. As far as I have played, I enjoy it more than SMS and SMG together.
Please Nintendo give us more Mario games like this!!!
Glad you're finding it hard - I'm finding it extremely easy. I'm at the exact same place as you and I haven't even died once yet. I'm still early in the game, though - I'm just concerned that I have nearly 20 lives already...
It's so much fun though I don't care too much - I know I'll be cursing at the game by the time I make it to the last world and it's old school Mario done perfectly. I think I've just played Mario games too much over the years.
Propeller suit > All other suits. Come on peeps, it's just so much more fun.
So far, the only slight niggle is how underused Yoshi is in NSMBW. You can't take him between levels like you could on World, and he only shows up a handful of times in the whole game.
The only black mark on this great game, for me.
Anyway, I am now very drunk indeed, and am about to go play it... Super Guide here we come!

Finding Nemo? No. Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up, Monsters Inc. or WALL-E? Yeah I'll take those over Beauty in the Beast any day. (But Aladdin will always be my all time favorite)

What in the world of bananas.
The Incredibles and Monster's Inc over Finding Nemo?
Anything over Finding Nemo? Have you SEEN Finding Nemo? lol

Actually, I considered Finding Nemo to be one of Pixar's weaker movies. Crazy, I know. It's still good, of course (There's no such thing as a bad Pixar movie, after all.), but I just didn't think it compared to the likes of Toy Story, Ratatoulle, or the Incredibles.
Oh, I think Beauty and the Beast is much better than Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and WALL-E. I don't care for Pixar's CGI films, classic Disney is for me.

It's not ridiculous hard like Castlevania, just the right amount of difficult. I am now in World 4 with 50 lifes and never used the 99 lifes trick. Getting 10 more lifes in every World so far, just by collecting coins and 1 up mushrooms...
As far as I have played now, I have to say it's the best Mario game ever for me and I haven't even played multiplayer yet!!!
