I love how they did this in middle of the Sony keynote.

who did they listen to>=?

Ben Cartwright: You and your education.
Adam Cartwright: Education is progress! Now what have you got against it?
Ben Cartwright: I don't have anything against education - as long as it doesn't interfere with your thinking!

Saw this coming. Joining in with the other consoles. This plus NSMBWii plus Wii Fit Plus equals major hliday success.
They of course denied. They lied about it so everyone else didnt get ideas. Now the XBOX elite is 250. Well now the wii is 200. Xbox just got rickrolled!

I don't know what to say. Is sad to see Nintendo drifting away from the "Blue ocean". They just lowed to the competition level.

Damn Nintendo why? Money? You were making money without the drop!

Doesn't make any sense...

Ramandus

I read they are still making money - like $80 or something (with the price drop). PS3 sales rose sharply when they lowered to $299. Remember a few months ago when the Wii and DS sold more units than all other consoles combined? And PS3 sales were despicable, even the PS2 was still selling more units. Right now, all 3 major consoles are selling about the same amount of units -- and holiday shopping hasn't even started yet. Nintendo wants an advantage for the holidays.

But apparently the Wii has gone the longest time of any console to sell at it's launch price.

Everyone saw this coming.

The next thing they need to do is make the Wii more connected....with anything. lol Also promote the online shop more, MUCH MUCH more.

I think that they should just release other colors. I wanted the black Wii when I first saw the codename Revolution and knew I was going to buy it... I even tried so hard to hold off on buying VC games when there was no such thing as Wii Ware games but as you might expect that didn't really work because as time went on I needed something to play so ya thats pretty much the story of a want for a black Wii and disappointment all in one.

We knew it was coming when Sony and MS dropped their console prices. No shock here.

Plain old gamer :)

I got mine for about $200 at Gamestop, and that was last year!

I think it's also awesome that some of this holiday's big hits are finally getting dates too.

Here's an old but interesting article on the cost and P/L per unit of this generation's consoles, for those of you interested.

Ya. I had a dream the other night that I got a package from Nintendo and it came with my subscription of Nintendo Power along with stickers of mario that looked like they were made by Stickeroni(sticker brand), and came with a bunch of cool stuff and thats how they were going to continue their subscription service, and with no extra cost.

Just so we're clear... you're the disappointed guy, right?

Oh, and I have no idea what you're talking about.

Nintendo dropped the price to $220 in Canada. I mean, I realise it's a great privilege to live here and have access to maple syrup and all, but I don't think the $20 Maple Tax is justified.

When Sony dropped the price, it was a drop to $299 in the US and Canada. No Maple Tax tacked on. I'm really getting fed up with this.

Ha, you're fed up. Don't even get me started.

Interesting link. It may be stubborn of me, but I still refuse to (knowingly) buy any piece of electronics that is being sold at a loss. Competition is all about managing costs and being innovate within the bounds of what is currently feasible; I don't believe any product should hit shelves until the company making it can get the production costs lower than the price a customer is willing to pay, period. Too much tech is forced out by huge subsidies from enormous companies that have nearly infinite pockets, and it distorts the whole market. Nintendo, being the only one of the three that is exclusively a gaming company, is also the only one who can't rely on profit from other divisions to subsidize their consoles, so they always keep their gadgets profitable on a per-unit basis, as they should.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

Ya but you're used to being treated poorly so it's not as bad for you.

I get what you're saying about not sponsoring a company's losing endeavour, but for my part, I follow that strategy only when I percieve that the company is doing so at its own peril and won't be around to support or enhance the product should volume sales actually occur. This is clearly not the case with Sony and Microsoft, who are using their consoles as loss leaders for software and accessory sales, and marketshare. In these cases, my motto would be something like "if they're willing to leave money on the table, I'm willing to take it." They'll live.

@Clix & 'Chu
And here I was thinking you were setting the table for some tasty puns with the references to syrup and being fed up. Could have been a good recipe to make this thread sticky. Everyone loves to dish 'em out, but usually waffle after cooking up one too many and then sour to the whole thing - which could be considered just desserts.
