well nintendo will probably have controllers for thier next system for cases like this so in that regard i hope they leave the gamecube stuff out of it, cant keep on expecting them to keep backwards compatability all the way back to the gamecube for the next console or 2 just cuz the wii games would work on the new console
If I remember correctly there wasn't much development differences between them. The hardware is also very similar. Miyamoto even said "The hardware is basically a GameCube."
Then there was the original philosophy behind the Wii development where Iwata talked about the criteria that the Wii had to meet. They summed it up to mom has to like it. They said it had to be small and that they didn't want multiple devices which lead to the decision to make the Wii backwards compatible. Usually Nintendo holds on to it philosophies.
The drop of the GBA slot was not as big of an issue since multiple handhelds don't have to take up living room space.
there won't be a next "Wii" console. But there will probably be a next "Nintendo" console.
I have to disagree with you there. Wii is a major brand name now. It would be like Nintendo not using the name Mario or Link in there games again. When the Wii2 comes out it will have the title Wii in it. My best guess is they are going to call it the Super Wii.

I have to agree with you here - Nintendo won't want to lose their newly gained "Wii" brand recognition - though I would personally prefer calling it "Wii Next" lol .
My guess is it won't be compatible with GCN games, but will with Wii games. Hopefully we'll see GCN/Dreamcast gen games on the shop for download. It would be a shame to lose the GCN controller slots for GCN and N64 games, but I'm guessing they'll make us switch to the classic controller completely next gen.
It'll almost be tempting for me to keep my Wii, just for the GCN controller and my Legend of Zelda/MQ discs. What would be amazing would be if they offered a feature to rip GCN disks you own onto the new system's harddrive. Doesn't the PS3/PSP let you do that? I doubt Ninty will allow it, because of piracy concerns. Tbh, I'd be willing to buy the games again for $15 or so on the VC, but I'd be sad to not be able to play Master Quest.

I think it will be a spin on the Wii brand. The DS killed the GameBoy brand. Now a new console is comming out and they called it the 3DS.
I doubt they will call it "Wii 2" I do think that what ever they call it will be based on the new direction the console goes in.
The next home console might be just an update for the Wii.
Perhaps a 3D LCD screen that turns all Gamecube and Wii games into 3D. It would be easy to do so since Gamecube and Wii games already automatically have that specific 3D-technology that the 3DS is built upon. Gamecube and Wii games just lack the 3D-compatible screen: In one of Iwata Asks, Miyamoto speaks about playing Luigi's Mansion on a Gamecube in 2001, in real 3D, but the technology for liquid crystal screens to make that 3D effect real for the consumer was too expensive.
When these 3D LCD screens start becoming affordable, I think that's when Nintendo steps into bringing 3D to the home console market. Some medium sized 3D LCD widescreen touchscreen for the established home console (Wii maybe?) With integrated microphone, camera, motion sensor, and other new things can happen in the imminent future. A concept of having a console combined with a screen, like an iMac, a Laptop, a Gamers Notebook or something. I would buy such a home console tv.
Also Nintendo looking to expand with the 3DS into making it a mobile phone/internet device are interesting. I would buy a Nintendo 3DS mobile phone
^^I don't see this happening. It would still cost a LOT of extra money to add a 3D screen. The tech the 3DS uses would only work for one person, since you have to be looking directly at the screen. You'd need to shoot light out in 4 directions for each pixel with a two player game, so multiplayer would be difficult to impossilbe, and local multiplayer is nintendo's bread and butter on home consoles. A TV sized screen would be expensive too, and I don't see most people buying a separate TV just for gaming. Where would they put it? I think people who would be seriously interested would just put their money towards a real 3D TV and just hook a playstation up to it or something.
Nintendo also doesn't have the experience in nongaming tech to do a full fledged computer/TV/smartphone type system without partnering up with Microsoft (not going to happen, since they compete in the console realm) or Apple (could happen for a console, but not for a portable). You would probably be the ONLY person who would buy a standalone Nintendo computer/TV.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
