how far backward will the next Wii console go if at all? Original Wii games and/or GameCube games?

The next console will probably have Wii backwards compatibilty a la the current Wii with Gamecube games, but you never know. It wouldn't make much sense not to have the next console have Wii backwards compatibilty, but you never know.

Exactly.

I hope all Nintendo CD based games will play, I want to play all my games on one system (Excluding Handheld) without Rebuying, but 1 things for sure VC/WW will be Transferable. I aslo want Saturn and Dream Cast on VC

the question was mainly because some of the models of the PS3 were NOT backwards compatable and the 360 not at all. thats why i asked "if at all".

That's assuming there will be another Wii console. Nintendo could do something different for the next gen.

there won't be a next "Wii" console. But there will probably be a next "Nintendo" console.

That's not true. The 360 does have some backwards compatibility. It's far from perfect, but there are a number of original Xbox titles that can be played on the 360.

I doubt it will be backwards compatible with Gamecube games

All we can do is speculate. They will probably have some sort of VC system if anything.

Instead of "ruining" GameCube memory cards it ruins the disc as well.

My guess is that it will run Wii discs, but not Gamecube discs

Honestly I've been hoping the next console will use carts. The 3DS carts can be up to 8gb in size (unless remember wrong), and they're tiny. A slightly bigger (physically) cart with 8gb or a bit more is plenty of space and shouldn't cost too much.

The only issue with my hoping is then, would the next console even have a disc drive?

If it is backwards compatible with the Wii then it will be backwards compatible with Gamecube. it wouldn't make since otherwise. Some Wii games use the Gamecube controllers so the next console would probably have those ports as well.

Unfortunately the system has a separate function for reading Gamecube games

It may be separate functionality but they already have the code written. To me it really comes down to whether or not they deside to add the Gamecube controller ports for backwards compatibility for Wii games. Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Brothers Brawl are compatible and games like DDR are dependent on them.

The only memory cards are not needed for Wii functionality. I think it is a safe bet that if they throw in the controller ports for the Gamecube then they will most likely put in the memory card ports.

I highly doubt gamecube compatibility. The DSi and 3DS doesn't play GBA games. Do don't expect gamecube on Wii 2

I'll give you that much. The slot was required for the Guitar Hero frets and it got canned anyway. but that was more of a game slot. In the case of the GameCube controller ports there are definite advantages to having them. Some people still prefer the physical controller for some games over the Wii remote. For games like SSBB I prefer the GameCube Controller.
