I've got a lower-end Philips 42" plasma and no issues with it. It doesn't do upscaling and honestly I don't see the point of that. The signal doesn't contain the extra lines, so you're really just adding noise. Get a good video calibration tool like DVD Video Essentials - cheaper and better viewing pleasure, I find.
@Donatello - thanks... well, I'm not going to buy a CRT now. These are only a few new ones here and they cost at least $200.. I did sell a nice Sony Trinitron (with flat screen) 29' two years ago for peanuts and now I'm sorry I did. It could have been nice for the Wii which I didn't know that I would buy.. I'm going to buy an HDTV but I don't think I'll have a chance to test it.
So ends a saga older than time itself. The World's oldest and fiercest army has been led to victory, and a lost generation is delivered from its fear of extinction. As the sun sets over the field of conflict the dinosaurs disperse, hoping never to set foot in this place a...
regardless of what tv type you prefer, i think there's no argument that being able to play all your wii games with true HD output like the dolphin provides would be an absolute good. it'd be much like the way N64 games got a big resolution boost from 240 to 480 on the VC; the games look so much better, but didn't have to be altered in any way to get it since it's the system's job to set the resolution.
you can see that this is very different from normal upscaling, which takes your SD picture and blows it up without the ability to add any new detail. emulator 'upscaling' actually does increase the amount of detail, while still faithfully drawing all of it from the artwork of the game itself. that's why this wii upscaler here isn't anything to get too excited about; for now it's about as close as you can get to HD wii emulation using your actual system, but it's not that close.
I'm sure you will find the response time (4ms), contrast ratio (50,000:1), black levels (improved drastically by using a natural black panel with a clear anti-glare shield) very much up to snuff.
Donatello, I would recommend that you take a look at this TV before casting more judgment on LCDs or on HDTVs in general. This TV is simply beautiful and as far as I can tell, has none of the problems you've described regarding LCDs (vs. Plasma) or HDTVs (vs. SD CRTs).

LOL funny you mention that model, since it was the exact same one my cousin had AND returned to get the Panasonic V10 50" Plasma. Sorry, but the motion on that display wasn't up to snuff....and the color on the Panasonic Plasma beats it easily. I mean seriously man there's no comparison, but i will admit that LCD's black levels were pretty nice, but overall it cant compare to the plasma he baught. It's like night and day, those were his exact words for watching movies on it and gaming. He'll never go LCD again
And no, your LCD isn't up to snuff compared to my CRT based on color and motion, yet it's blacks are decent and close I'll give you that. But honestly, LCD's just arent there yet....
Model number incorrect. LN46C630K1F if it makes a difference... Anyway, whether you want to go with Plasma or LCD, you really should just go ahead and get an HDTV. It's a really, really great experience with HD devices (Star Trek on Blu Ray is just amazing). And of course, you need an HDTV for watching football.
Going by the screen shots, you can tell the colors are alittle more richer, and the image is barely clearer. Yet what's up with the slighty darker image? Waste of bloody cash if you ask me.
there are options on the unit for enhanced color and maybe a few other options, which i'm guessing they have on. i'd rather see them test without any alterations other than the scaling to see if the colors are still distorted
but, if you look at the original 480p shot: http://www.vdigi.com/images/products/vd-w3/cs/Mario_480p_2_mo... ...the upscaler does technically work. it makes noticeable improvements to the picture, just ones that are so modest that they in no way solve the problem the scaler is supposed to be addressing: the rough and jaggedy appearance of 480p. just to reiterate, the jaggies are already irreversibly in place by the time the signal reaches the scaler. the wii renders the games with them and they are part of the signal that leaves the console as much as mario and his red hat. all this device does is reduce some of the jaggies created by your tv, not the wii itself. in other words it's a useless gesture if you want real HD, but if you're a videophile and want your wii to look as good as humanly possible then it may be up your alley.
That really does look like a big waste of time; the Wind Waker screens look practically the same to me - the 1080i one is slightly blurrier in places is all.
i actually thought that one looked pretty decent-- are you making sure to open the pics in a new window? i always forget to mention that, the in page view won't full-size.
Yep, and I'm not really seeing the difference. I suppose the outline on Link might be sharper, but making things in the background or elsewhere on the screen fuzzed out to hide jagged edges doesn't seem like an improvement to me.
whether the upscaler makes any difference or not is kind of irrelevant after seeing that dolphin emulator pic anyway. it's hard to get excited about an expensive product that's so thoroughly put to shame by a free computer program.
I can definitly see a difference regarding the 2 Wind Waker Pics, it's not huge or anything but it's definitly noticable. It looks like it pretty much gets rid of the jaggies and overall makes the image look alittle Clearer and smoother. if I did own an HDTV set than I think I would actually plunk down the cash and get ones of these, and hey it did go down $60 Because I'll get anything if it improves PQ or performance, i have to have the best! hehe.
The only thing stopping me from gaming on an HDTV Plasma regarding the Wii now is minor Lag, Green trailing and inferior Motion I'm so tempted! Does this scaler support 1024x768 from a plasma? since it's a fixed resution. I know Panasonic makes 42" 1080p plasmas, and while they deliver better blacks and less IR when compared to Samsung, Samsung Sets have much better color and a clearer/sharper picture.
