Topic: Need Help - Component Cable Issue

Hey everyone, recently my Wii's video cable ceased to work (I believe it has shorted out.). It sparked when I tried to plug it into my TV last time, and that's when I believe it stopped working. The sound works fine, and I can start up games. I tried on 2 different TVs, but it still refuses to work. I've never changed my console to Progressive Scan either, so I think it's just a plain cable issue. I've had it since launch, so it is pretty old I guess, so I figured I'd buy a new one.

Due to time constraints though, I don't have time to order a replacement Nintendo one now. (If I did, I'd have to wait more than 3 weeks to finish Xenoblade, and I don't want that to happen.) I was wondering if anyone else has gotten this from GameStop before: http://www.gamestop.com/accessories/mad-catz-universal-compon...

If so, did you use it for your Wii and did it work? I'm not a big fan of MadCatz, but if someone here tells me this product works I'll get it for a temporary fix until I can get a Nintendo one. Thanks.

I just get Nintendo ones. I don't use generics because I've seen my cousins' Wii...those generic remotes, etc. are total crap. After that impression, I've always went w/ the official stuff (w/ the license and all that). Preferably made by Nintendo, but Power A's okay too. Then again...when have they made a component cable? So yeah...I'm of little help, except giving you my opinion on most generics. In that case, you may want to live without Xenoblade for a bit, which I know first-hand would suck.

Yeah, I tried the MadCatz ones (couldn't find Nyko ones) and they didn't work. I'm sending in for Nintendo ones, so no Xenoblade for a couple more days. Thanks for the replies, though.

I wouldn't think that sparks should come out of a video cable myself, so you might want to test out the composite cable that comes with the Wii just to confirm that video works on it at all. Sounds like you needed a new cable anyway, but the problem may be more serious than that.

For a brief time I owned a North American Wii and rather than invest in a third Nintendo component cable (I have a PAL and Japanese Wii) I decided to get a cheapo 3rd party one (no brand name I can recall) and it worked just fine. If the cables are really poor quality then the lack of proper shielding can cause interference with other devices if the cables are in proximity (I've had this happen when using crappy SCART cables with DVD players). At a minimum try to source your cable from a supplier in your home country to ensure that you can get a refund if they're not up to scratch.

Sparks would be more to do with your TV connections then the actual cable. My Toshiba 37 inch REGZA that I have my consoles hooked to blew up last year when I connected a generic component cable. All I did was whip the back off it, found the blown resistor, cut it off, then bridged the wires. Has been working nicely since my expert technical repair. I would go with official Ninty comps.
