Yes I realise that this franchise has been done to death. I also realise that the core gameplay mechanics which made the game great are probably the same as they were in previous versions. Also as far as games on the Wii go Guitar Hero isn't exactly one of those titles that we didn't see comming. So who the hell would be hyped about this?
Ok so maybe I am buying into the ad revenue induced over-coverage this game has been given over at IGN but it seems like this time the Wii version of this game is genuinely pushing what is and isn't done on the Wii. It has gotten to the point that the system is finally getting a version of guitar hero that isn't just comparable to the other versions (World Tour) but by the sounds of it Guitar Hero 5 for Wii is probably the definitive version of the game.... period. For a start it throws out the friend code system and is using the system friend code. Have a system friend but don't know if they have the game? No problem, they are already added. As cool as that is pushing one system annoyance wasn't enough because they decided a game like Guitar Hero also needed a better way to handle DLC than the Wii currently allows. The game lets you download and play songs directly from the SD card. If that wasn't enough these things (like the SD card menu before it) are most probably going to become the rule rather than the exception after this.
Thought that was cool enough? well apparently its not. This game has always been about songs and so its worth nothing without tracks you like. It seems just then that from day one they are going to have most of the previous DLC from the other games and the ability to "copy over" songs from the older games you might own for a small licensing fee. Did you love World Tour and want to go nuts to "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" by the Beastie Boys on day one? Go for it! And what's that? DS-Wii connectivity in something other than an average Pokemon battling game and its actually.... fun? Colour me shocked. Based on all of that (and somehow actually more than that) I will probably have more fun with this game in the menu of the game than some games in their entirety.
yup... that's why I am hyped about this. Is anyone else hyped about this?
No....beacuse I wasn't hyped about GH3, or Rockband 2, or GH4. It's. The. Same. Game. The only one that did much for me post-GH2/original Rockband was the DS version of GH because of the multiplayer (which was of course raped by stylus-picking issues and successful-button-pressing irritations). Especially when the iPhone/iPod Touch has Tap Tap Revenge...for free... I've had my fun with rhythm games--now I'm playing/writing real music again and it's much more satisfying.
EDIT: To be fair though, on its own merits, it's the most tempting Rhythm game to own on the Wii given its new-to-Wii (should've always been included...) features. Still, my 94-dollar-on-sale entirety-of-Rockband for PS2-I-got-2ish-years-ago is still serving me just fine.
The funny thing is I've always been hyped, but don't care for the GH series (rhythmically challenged I guess). I just love that it's far from a lazy Wii port, it's just unfortunate it's not part of a brand I care for.

not really, guitar hero 3 is enough for when friends come over.
There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore
Unfortunately not. I haven't played Guitar Hero, but any chance of me playing it is gone because its owned by Activision. I do intend to buy Beatles Rock Band at some point.
Somebody set up us the bomb. Wii: 8703 7486 8875 3789 I love PWN3NG NintendoLife members on Tatsunoko :-)
No not really. I do want that Beatles game though. A popular music game that will have more than two songs that I like? NO WAY!

I want that badass drumkit.

My wife and I bought it last night, and we had a great time with it. Hopefully they will offer a lot more DLC than they did for World Tour, right now, Rock Band 2 on Wii is the best one because of all the extra songs you can download.

I was unti I saw they made Kurt Cobain playable. Seeing him with hair metal tracks is just wrong. What's next, a playable Ray Charles doing death metal?
I'll still rent it, though.

I realized how little i cared about these "music" games (GH and RB) when, despite being my favorite band of all time, the announcement of Beatles Rock Band elicited nothing more than a half-hearted "meh".
The only Guitar Hero game I want is The Aerosmith version since I'm a big fan of that band and its the last game in the series that actually focus on the guitar instead of a full band. I find myself more interested in DJ Hero as it focuses on a different genre of music (a man can only take so much rock), and the controller and gameplay looks intresting.
To be perfectly honest I was sold on this before all the extra features were announced. I had avoided this series like the plague and was finally considering picking up World Tour when details of Guitar Hero 5 started to surface. I think I decided that this would be the better bet about when I first found out that Guitar Hero was going to have Sonic Youth in it again and not only that but a fairly good track that could provide some challenge. Then on top of that they start adressing some of the things that have been annoying about the series and particularly the series on the Wii.
Does it contain mainstream music that I don't give a shit about? maybe. Are there songs that would I would rather see inthis game that will probably go over peoples heads? hell yes. Is it a game that people grab onto because of its apparent "hardcore-ness"? maybe. Are its publishers and developers milking this for all its worth to the point that there are probably too many? yeah, no doubt. Having said all that why should I care? I am not trying to be some "kool thing" (see what I did there?) I am just trying to have fun and it appears that Guitar Hero 5 is a refined and perfected version of the fun that made it popular.
