The hardest part was not dying of boredom from all of the talking in the game. The action was great, but the dialogue just dragged...

Totaly. It was well written, but there was just way too much of it.
Not to mention the constant switching to 3D got annoying at times. heh, and i just ordered Paper Mario TYD for the GCN on eBay. Everybody says it's the greatest Paper Mario....and just by checking out the footage it does look fantastic. Hell, I dont even like turn based RPG's but I'm willing to give this one a shot

I prefer PM to TTYD. PM is quicker due to being more simple. TTYD is still great, although it is a bit slow at times.

The hardest part was not thinking about its predecessors and becoming dissappointed.

EDIT: nevermind, got it, although it sounds like you should have been too disappointed by Super Paper Mario if you basically believe that the 2nd game was already a drop in quality from the first. Why not expect another little drop for the third? In any case, I'm actually playing through Super Paper Mario for the first time now, and it's been very enjoyable not having to switch into RPG-battles, although I can see several ways in which it doesn't quite have the same humor and charm of the previous games. It's still a great game so far, though, and doesn't seem like a significant drop in quality to me, just a slight one.

@Donatello: What a coincidence, I just ordered a copy from Ebay yesterday! If I'm the highest bidder, I'll have completed my Paper Mario collection. It's not very hard to complete though, since there are only three games in the series. I want more Paper Mario from Nintendo! The DS would be a great system to make a Paper Mario game for.

If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

But the writing is one of the best things about the Paper Mario series. Were you expecting a regular platformer?

The writing was fantastic and very clever, but again there was just too much of it at times.

Nice
How much did you end up paying for it without shipping?
I got mine for $19.50. I guess that's a decent deal. And as much as I love the art direction, music, story and so on from the Footage I've seen on Youtube, I'm just worried about the Turn Based Combat which seems to slow down the pace of the game. And really, I'd rather move around like in Super Paper Mario and attack platformer style.

And is it me, or does TYD look a bit more impressive than Super Paper Mario visually? And how do you think the first Paper Mario stacks up against Super Paper Mario?

I also think the Thousand-Year Door looks a bit better than Super Paper Mario, but that's just because of the more traditional setting. SPM has all those different dimensions that sometimes look a bit too weird to be beautiful.
I think you might find that the turn based combat is not so bad (I loved it) because you won't be sitting back and watching what happens. You have to perform timed actions to make your attacks and defence successful, and you can also make stylish moves/combos.
I also enjoyed the first Paper Mario a bit more than Super Paper Mario, but the Thousand-Year Door is definitely the best one.
