2. Punchout!! - An update of a Nintendo classic made specifically for long time Nintendo fans (filled with nods and winks to fans of the series)
Fun, but wow, what effort they put in ... ONE new opponent, and everybody else is recycled!
3. 2D MARIO!!!! NSMBW is awesome, harks back to the good ol days of Nintendo gaming!
Or, as I like to call it, "the game that, without multi-player, would be on the DS ".
Sorry, I disagree wholeheartedly. Nintendo dropped the ball on the long-time, hardcore gamer audience and focused on grandmas and newbies. While it's nice to see this year they're stacking the deck with new Mario, Metroid AND Zelda games, they're also going all-in. What's next year? And the year after? Why haven't they gotten more 3rd parties on the VC, like EA? For that matter, where's the AAA titles from third parties? For every right Nintendo gets, they get two wrongs. And there was no reason for it to be so this generation.

It costs about $139 for a 32GB (maximum) SD card ...
You're getting majorly ripped off dude if that's the price you're paying for a 32GB SD card. Now granted, I'm getting a PS3 because I can attach my 1TB external HD to it (that and they support just about any Bluetooth headset), but you can find a 32GB SD card for -- at a minimum -- half the price you quoted here, and flash media will always continue to drop in cost.
Well, this site has it listed for that much, as well as this one. I know they are the same site, but different brands. And a quick Amazon search shows that they are pretty high on their site, also.
The Game.
Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

In other words, "This year looks great, but I need something to complain about, so I bet next year will suck." This is the most bizarre logic I've yet to see in this thread, which says a lot. First you say they focus too much on grandmas, and now, what, are they releasing too many games? Maybe we should call Iwata and ask him to delay one or two of them because we're not ready for Zelda just yet.

sheesh if your so cynical about it, then get a xbox and stop complaining
but anyway i think that your confusing "hardcore" gamers, with "long time" gamers. punch out and mario werent remade for hardcore gamers because quite frankly neither are hardcore games. and secondly, casual gamers could use the sd card slot. your saying that only hardcore gamers download games, where 70 percent of the wiiware games are casual. so i think your facts are all wrong, none of those mean nintendo cares about HC gamers. but the signs that they do show are games like Twilight Princess, Smash Bros, and Metroid Prime

And I would be upset about SD cards too. It costs about $139 for a 32GB (maximum) SD card, while it costs $150 for 120GB 360 hard drive, and $100 for a 1000GB (1TB) USB hard drive that can be used for PS3 and PC. It is a rip off.
Given size limitations on WiiWare games and the fact that there's "only" 20 pages in the SD Channel, getting an SD card bigger than 8GB is a waste of space. I've got 2GB and 4GB cards in my Wiis; none of them are close to getting full.
With regards to the OP, I agree there's a lot of moaning based on very little reality. 3rd parties do seem to be screwing up on the Wii by not putting sufficient marketing muscle behind their games and I do blame Nintendo for not doing enough to screen titles for publication. I'm not just talking about the flood of party game titles, but budget crap games like the Popcorn series as well. Of course 3rd parties should have their heads examined if they think they're going to do big numbers with M-rated titles on a console which was built and marketed for a family audience. I have a ton of certificate 15+ games, but I'm under no illusion that on the Wii I'm anything other than a minority audience. If publishers want the big numbers they need to make something quality from the ground-up for the Wii and then market it effectively.
"The Casuals" are not the big enemy here; people who bought a Wii for Wii Fit and that's it were never a potential "gamer" in the first place. The 3rd parties seem to have gone nuts assuming that was the case; Nintendo seems to be happy to have any 3rd party support after the Gamecube experience so they're not being as restrictive with what gets published as they should to protect the brand image of the Wii as a quality gaming platform.

I think your reply is confusing my points with the other person that commented's points, I also never mentioned anything about "hardcore" games if I remember correctly I've only been using the term "core" which to me means long term gamers. I also think that Punchout!! should be considered a "core" game (just because it's light-hearted doesn't mean its not a gamer game) The term "hardcore" is kind of meaningless.

The usual nonsense. People referring to "casuals" like it's a clear-cut noun now and not a highly ambiguous adjective. RWP constantly talking as if his being the only person in the world not to like NSMBW makes it a bad game. And something about short memories that so far no one has been able to figure out. Let me know if you can piece this together any better. Oh, and apparently the SD solution is Iwata's gift to man now, despite the fact that it was a very simple fix to a problem that should not have been a problem in the first place had they just thought ahead.
The memory thing was just an interesting heading, which as someone pointed out earlier was done to avoid trolls and fanboys, I don't think there is anything too cryptic about the idea that some gamers have a very "selective" memory when it comes to Nintendo (forgetting the good, focussing on the bad). Also I'd be quite interested to know where you found the info about solving the SD problem (i.e. it being an easy fix) I'm not a programmer but it would make interesting reading. Also no-one is saying that the SD problem is god's gift, we were just acknowledging that despite the fact that it should have been done from the beginning it was still a cool thing for Nintendo to do. They could have easily have said deal with it.

By the way I did in no way intend this thread to cause upset or offence to anyone, it was merely based on observations I've made whilst browsing numerous sites and forums. I hoped that we could engage in mature discussion about our hobby which is the purpose of forums after all!
Side note: I never once said that "casual" gamers were the enemy either, I'm actually glad that Nintendo have made gaming a viable pastime now

I'm still confused as to what constitues a 'hardcore' game.
Is it 'any game I like which doesn't sell'?
Its a game thats made for gamers who take games seriously. The people who spend hours every day playing the games and enjoy the games being quite difficult or demanding. I don't like to call overly violent or mature games 'hardcore' although some can be.
If you play games casually, like 30 minutes every few days or so, thats a casual gamer. There are games made for such people which makes them casual games. They're easy to play but doesn't offer much to reward long term playing. You'll likely see all the game has to offer after a few hours. Good casual games are still fun to play even after beating the games many times.
At least thats my definition of it.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I think that's a pretty good description. Also I think under this description both games I mentioned in the original post come under this description (watch some of the skill video's for NSMBW to see that it is truly HARDCORE!! lol also without the use of Youtube or FAQ's Punchout!! has gameplay that would last ages!) Good post

Perfect definition of causal/ hardcore gaming. I would imagine that is how game companies define it.
SD card fix only automates what gamers have been doing ever since the VC came out. It loads a game to the Wii from the SD card and deletes it after. I'm not a programmer either, but anyone will tell you that's not rocket science. Considering the other consoles have full-fledged hard drives, this is the very, very least Nintendo could do to offer something similar, and it still managed to take them forever.
Also with regards to the SD card menu and Virtual Console, in my understanding many "casual" gamers are completely unaware of the on-line capabilities of the Wii so I doubt that they highly contribute to Virtual Console and Wiiware sales. (This is evident from Nintendo's ambassador program). Many "casual" gamers are also not very technologically minded (which is why they were drawn to the Wii in the first place i.e. non-threatening, non-complex gaming) because of this I find it hard to believe that they would really be crying out for a memory upgrade, which is something "core" gamers would definitely benefit from more. Once again I would like to repeat that YES this should have been done from the outset BUT the fact that Nintendo responded to our wishes is a nice gesture, its not world shattering but it is a step in the right direction!

Thanx, that helped me to understand that a little better. I also understand that it did take Nintendo a long time to do what should have been done from the get go BUT the point I was trying to make was the fact that Nintendo responded to the needs of "core" gamers, which makes it another example that shows Nintendo are still trying to cater to the needs of those who use their consoles for serious gaming. Couple this with the other good things other people have mentioned and you have to admit that Nintendo are not the "Big evil gamer hating corporation" many fanboys make them out to be, they are instead a company that have changed the dynamics of the game industry and are trying their best to appease both their old fans and new recruits, but the main point I'm trying to make is that they ARE trying! Does that make sense, lol. Once again thank you for the info
