The old dual layered games do not work in my Wii problem...... anyone got easy fixes for this outside of gutting open my Wii or sending it in to Nintendo?
As Raylax said, try the lens cleaning kit, it's only $10 and it works...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."
Yeah, I've been using that. It's a pain though. I have to run the lens clener disc, put the game in, doesn't work, run the lens cleaner disc, put the game in, doesn't work....ect. until it does finally work. Pain.....
Anyone know why this happens? I don't want it to happen to my Wii. I don't have a lens cleaning kit.
I've heard 2 theories repeated quite a bit online:
1: The lens gets dirty and is not able to function well enough to read through both layers of data on a disc. Some say overusing a lens clearer can (in some cases) smear grime on the lens, making it much tougher to remove.
2:The laser mechanism in the Wii simply weakens over time. Not a problem for a normal disc, but with the dual layered ones it can't read the data properly.
Again, this is just what I've heard from people online.
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
I don't buy that the laser mechanism 'weakens'. That sounds like mumbo jumbo if you ask me. I had this problem with Metroid Other M and went for the disc cleaner. Didn't work, even after 5 or 6 cleans I was still getting disc errors. Was all ready to send it off when it occured to me that the disc errors were occuring later and later with each clean (ie: I was getting through more gameplay before an error). So I figured it was worth another shot. Gave it another couple of careful cleans and the game started running fine. I've now finished Other M without any errors.
So I'd recommend giving it a good few tries with the disc cleaner before you give up, especially if you notice any difference (like slightly fewer disc errors)
It ain't mumbo jumbo. This is one of the reasons why Niintendo didn't allow the Wii to read DVD's, because it causes the laser to wear out faster than it would if they didn't read DVD and games.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Ah, I guess they mean the mechanism that moves the laser from point to point on the disc, not the actual light of the laser itself! My mistake, that sounds very plausible. I suspect that's what's happened to my noisy launch day wii actually.
I don't think it's so much that the laser mechanism "wears out" as it can go out of alignment.
Even my 2nd gen DVD player needed to be sent to the shop for adjustment.
If you felt up to it you could get a set of tiny screwdrivers and manually adjust the angle of the laser yourself (should be two screws on either side of the lens mechanism for this I think), but naturally you'd risk making the issue worse and voiding your warranty.
Well my wii had this problem so I had to ship it off to Nintendo (twice actually since they didn't fix it the first time) and what they did to fix it was replace the drive. I don't know if it's absolutely necessary to replace it but I do know that worked.
Sometimes it is caused by getting dirty so it's possible that a can of air may work, but if it's not because of being dirty though it won't do a thing.
@peach I know the feeling, since getting the Wii in 2006, I've also had to send it in twice. Once a new disk player (was scraping up the disks, at least they replaced my scratched games free of charge), and again for a motherboard (system would display a black screen most times when starting up, and yes I did have to re-download all my games and lost my demos ). Next time the Wii breaks, I hope it breaks under warranty. (Every time you send a console in for repairs, they extend the warranty)
Another grumble in between the Wii's problems was that the TV blew multiple capacitors and failed to turn on. At least everything works well now!
I sent my Wii and SSBB to Ninty and they replaced both the laser mechanism and game disc for free.
...And I'd bought the Wii from ebay 2 years prior :3
Edit: Actually it was MPT that it wouldn't read, but I tried SSBB after that to see if it as the laser problem(because I bought MPT used) and it didn't work either.
I sent mine to Nintendo because of the exact same thing, all Nintendo did was replace the disc drive, I didn't even get charged for it. And now it reads them discs fine without any problems. But the laser can get dirty because of either air freshners, smoke, dust, hair or other materials.
But the most likely problem is, the disc drive fails over a period of time, or the laser is just plain ol' dirty.
The only thing you can do is send it to Nintendo. If you get someone else to open it, it voids your warranty and Nintendo won't go near it...
