Capcom's "bitching" (and subsequent back-track) about poor sales of Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles was ill-aimed, WiiWare developer Bloober Team has told Eurogamer.
"With such a strong install base it's hard to believe that there's not enough people to appreciate mature, core content," said executive producer Marcin Kawa. "It's all about games and quality. I'm not surprised that another shooter on rails doesn't sell well. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that people expect something more than that..
"I bet No More Heroes 2 will do pretty good, as well as the new Metroid and Capcom's Monster Hunter. I hope that Last Flight will be successful and that's because we're making a game that was thought out as a Wii game.
"Instead of bitching," he added, "we'd rather create something that has value and doesn't feel like a third-rate port put together to make a quick buck."
Bloober's making Last Flight, a visually simple but striking action-horror game inspired by Golden Axe, although we've yet to see the similarities. Importantly, this is a WiiWare game aimed at a mature audience that Marcin Kawa is adamant exists on Wii, despite the public lethargy for critically acclaimed games like MadWorld and No More Heroes.
"Was it the right decision to develop a game on Wii? Should we make it less violent? Are we gonna sell enough copies to pay our bills? You know, typical questions, nothing unusual here," Kawa said. "And while we love and respect Capcom and Pachter, we wouldn't go that far and say that mature stuff doesn't sell or that it's the platform holder's fault.
"Our logic is far simpler: if the game doesn't sell, we did something wrong."
The first episode of Last Flight, of which there are four, will be released on WiiWare "really soon".
I don't think any platform "needs" M-rated titles, but I'm definitely interested to see how one looks and sells on WiiWare.
I completely agree with the sentiment that the big companies moaning recently just look like fools that don't understand their own business with these pronouncements about how they don't "get" the Wii market. Surely in a big outfit like that one of the first things they should be doing is sitting down and identifying the target market and seeing if it's worthwhile to make the game. I thought Darkside Chronicles was great, but how well did Umbrella Chronicles sell -- shouldn't that be the benchmark rather than Resident Evil 4? Other than the RE name and setting they have nothing in common!
I think it does, too many of the wii games are crap, and yes,i do own a wii.they need just to capture some fans that are into call of duty and halo and gears of war, rather than all anime and mario(which I think is still fun, just a lil childish)
I have a wii, wish it was an xbox360 with Wii controls...

Just a question. How does adding an M to the ratings box turn a crap game into a good game?
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
Welcome back AlexSays, it's been awhile. I don't know whether to take your last comment seriously or as sarcasm. Let's say you're serious. The DS does just fine with only E-T games and I actually wouldn't have it any other way. When a developer actually shoots for that darn M-rating it's usually the most immature piece of crap. Well, on Nintendo platforms at least.
I loved Silent Hill but recently I've been hearing nothing but complaints about sales of games T-M. The console doesn't need that stuff, heck it doesn't even need hardcore games (whatever that means) I just wish whatever games were released were of higher quality.
M-rated games (and if COD is any indication, even gimped ones) can and do sell on the platform. The problem is at times lack of marketing. If they marked their games like a 360 title that'd lead to a different problem though. What if the game still doesn't break even. That's why quality efforts like Silent Hill and such are released so quietly. They have the hope (and cover art) that people will just look at the game and say "I want that!" The big deal, though, is that the Wii audience is a weird one and no one knows what to expect.
There is definitely a market for M games, they just need to appeal to people. Capcom and Sega should stop complaining that people don't like mature games.
Mostly sarcasm, but there is a lil seriousness. Of course the console doesn't 'need' M rated games and does just fine without them, like the DS, but having Dead Space and Silent Hill seems better than not having them at all.
Developers definitely shouldn't 'aim' for a mature rating (and it's almost always the opposite, T = bigger audience) but having the few that are rated M like Dead Space do add more variety, and games, to the Wii's library.
@Bloober_Team: I have been interested in this game for quite some time and it has nothing to do with the fact that it is a M-rated title. I like the concept of the game and the comic book art style appeals to me. It seems like it has some real potential and I hope that it turns out to be a good game. I am glad to see that it will be hitting WiiWare really soon because I am looking forward to it. Since this will be an episodic game then I am interested in finding out the price point for each chapter. If Last Flight turns out to be a quality game and is priced fairly then I will definitely download it. I hope we will see a trailer for it very soon.

And I love the Rabbid series. Why do you ask?
Just a bit interested in your gaming tastes that's all.

I think I need more mature games, I wonder if all these 3rd party games that only sell 20,000 (or less) will be worth a lot more in 10 years. Some of them will probably be considered classics by then and everybody will be trying to download them to see what all the praise is about.
Somebody set up us the bomb. Wii: 8703 7486 8875 3789 I love PWN3NG NintendoLife members on Tatsunoko :-)
I just want a game they takes advantage of unique Wii functionality, not another generic beat em up/slash em up. Don't get me wrong though. I like the No More Heroes series and can't wait for Red Steel 2. I just think that a game idea for Wii, mature, casual, whatever should be based on the controller and not an idea that would make more since on a more traditional machine.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Last Flight handles motion controls (maybe the fat dude can cast spells or something) but if Bloober Team can make something as silly and satisfying as No More Heroes, then I'll definitely give it a look. More NMH less Madworld.

Darkside Chronicles would've sold better if it WASN'T a rail shooter.
But it was still damn good. Although, I think itwould have been a little more interesting with a RE4/5 control scheme/set-up, especially when it comes to co-op. I do hope we see an RE of that sort on Wii, but I also wouldn't mind getting the third of a trilogy of RE rail-shooters. (This time, make it cover 4,5, and Degeneration!)
