Most of the ones I own have an added bonus of extra options to make the games more acessable to less skilled players. Like In Shinobi you can add as many lives as you want so you'll always be able to continue instead of having to start over. I was thinking of getting Commando and wondering if this feature is on that game as well? Games with a very small number of lives don't sit well with me because I hate starting over.

The options aren't the same across all manufacturers, but they are similar.
Tecmo Capcom and Sega offer adjustable difficulty in addition to the ability to adjust lives/score for extra life award.
Namco doesn't offer adjustable difficulty settings (as you would find in the actual arcade cab and in MAME ROMS of these games), but has a fixed difficulty a bit above average. If you want more challenge you need to tweak the lives/award settings.
I prefer the adjustable difficulty option as it means the enemies have tougher or weaker attack patterns or their numbers and speed change, however the fact that Namco's choices are leaning towards more challenging means I'm not too fussed. If they fixed them at easy levels I'd be annoyed because it wouldn't feel like the game I remembered from the arcade. The only game I really notice a difference between VCA and arcade is Rolling Thunder because the enemies in the stairwell at the end of the last installation level are different, but that's cool.
