Topic: Controller lag

I've just recently purchased my first two VC games (being SMB and SMB3), but it is hard to enjoy the game properly because there is a noticable delay between the controller and game (about a third of a second delay between pressing jump, and Mario actually jumping). I've been looking thru various forums, and there doesnt seem to much information on it. I am thinking about buying a classic controller as its wired and might reduce the problem, but I dont want to spend $27 (AUD) if it doesnt fix it.

I have heard it might be due to my TV settings and interlacing etc, but I wouldnt know what to change. I've got a Sony 40" LCD TV (X-Series), with the cables that came with the Wii. Is there any particular settings I should use, or any settings on the Wii itself to limit the amount of delay?

I'm not too sure about controller lag, but I've just got a 32" Samsung LCD, I'm running my Wii through component (the cables in Chibi Link's post) and SMB3 doesn't work It goes to a black screen and says "mode not supported". I'm sure other members can shed a bit more light on this but if you do go for the component cable - which I would still recommend - be aware that some of your games will need a cable swap.

It´s the TV. It´s the processing time in your flatscreen that produces the lag. Try shutting off any type of motion smoother. Also check this thread https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii/not_getting_169_or_am_... it gets a little off topic after a while discussing your problem. A new controller wont solve your problem.

@Prosody "Initially, some PAL Virtual Console games would not display correctly on high-definition televisions when connected via the component lead. However, starting with the April 13, 2007 update of the PAL Virtual Console, certain newly added games, such as Punch-Out!!, support the "Wii Component Cable Interlace mode." This is a temporary fix to problems with various Virtual Console games being played over component cable on HDTVs. The mode can be enabled by accessing the operations guide of the game, and (with the Nunchuk attached) pressing the buttons Z + A + 2 simultaneously. A sound is played if the mode is enabled correctly. Several older games also have updates available to enable the feature, such as Super Castlevania IV. The mode can be disabled by using the same method, but with the button combination Z + A + 1 instead. A full list of games supporting this mode is available at nintendo.no, an English version can be found at vc-forums.com." (Wikipedia)

By this method you can get NES and SMS VC games to work using component cables.

On another note does anybody know if the controller lag on a wavebird is so bad as to disadvantage me when I'm playing say Melee.

There is a tiny delay between my moving of the GameCube/Classic Controller stick and Link actually moving in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I had no issues with SMB3 (other than getting so frustrated with the game I had to banish it from my system completely); my plasma also does all resolutions over component (and cost under £700) -- bow down before me!

@Sean is this on your Japanese Wii?

Both systems, although the only resolutions I encounter on the Japanese system are 480i and 480p, whereas the PAL Wii has games that run the gamut of 480i, 480p and 576i (why oh why won't the Wii output 576p like my DVD player??!!).

If you're referring to SMB3 I purchased that for my PAL system.

Buy the component cables, they are totally worth it.

Component cable recommended but might not solve your problem. Have you disabled any motion smoother in your TV? That would more possible solve your problem.

Firkraag

If you have a LCD TV get component cables for sure, 480p is superior in every way. And see if there's a game mode among your "AV modes".

Thanks for the information guys. I've ordered some component cables, so I'll see how they go!

When you get them, make sure to enable "EDTV 480p" in TV type under the Wii settings.
