I, somehow, know the answer: Your Nintendo Wii's Lens is dirty! I know this because I kept on getting error codes in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and a Nintendo service employee said to buy an official Nintendo Lens cleaning kit for $9.99 much cheaper than sending the console in! My Nintendo Wii was noisy but after I used the lens cleaner it's silent!
Hmm, dirty lens, huh? That might just be the cause of my Wii failing to read my Metroid Prime Trilogy disc right away. Where did you happen to buy this lens cleaning kit?

I got my lens cleaning kit at Best Buy. Maybe you can get it at gamestop if you don't have a Best buy nearby, but I'm not sure. Just make sure it's the official Nintendo cleaning kit. Oh, and I had a few error codes with Metroid Prime Trilogy also, but the lens cleaning kit made those go away. But be sure to read the instructions first!

I have both stores close by, so I'll keep an eye out for it next time I visit either store (especially that it's the official Nintendo one), thanks...

I have fixed the noise on my Wii, and the noise on my brothers. All you need is a Tri-Wing screwdriver, a steady hand and lots of patience. Using the following videos I was able to disassemble my Wii and bend the little piece of metal that causes the problem... [youtube:Mp1ZQS4UC9g] [youtube:H8A72JLr7No]
I did this a year ago and that horrible noise has not returned, it's like having a new Wii.
I fixed the noise on my Wii disc drive also about a year ago with the help of above videos on Machus post. The noise has not returned for me neither.
I actually didn't bend that metal piece but instead I put some paper there (it's mentioned on the video) and the annoying noise was gone **phew** (note that if you use the paper method make sure it sticks there and won't fall off to jam the disc drive mechanics!)

I live half a mile from NoA in Redmond, WA. Whenever I have a problem wif de old Wii or DS I just walk it there and have it fixed for free, and look at all the beautiful Nintendo merchandise while I wait :3

Ha! I tried that at first but didn't like the idea of a piece of paper sitting inside my Wii. Definitely the easier option though, as bending that piece of metal was a bit scary.
Another cause of the noise problem is if your Wii is on hard, thin surface, especially metal (like if it's sat on top of another device like a DVD player) - the disk spins, the Wii vibrates slightly, you get a lot more noise. Like when your mobile phone rings when its on a table. So before ripping your Wii open a la Machu's vids or sending it off for replacement, try putting in a different place or put something underneath it.
Well, I'm really glad you started this thread now, Starkiller. I was worried about sending it in for repairs, but I think I'll go for it now. Thanks, Hylian, Tony, and anyone else who pointed out the replacement offer. I didn't realize there was a solution; I thought it was just an inherent fault of the hardware for being so cheap and small. Hooray for being wrong!
One question though: Did they actually replace the disc reader, or did they just give you a new Wii? I do NOT want to lose my Brawl save data.
When I spoke to the Customer service rep. they explained that if the disc drive was faulty and needed to be replaced then my save data would be fine. She later mentioned that if there were other issues that involved replacing the console that Nintendo would transfer Wii shop acct. to a new console. In my case I was getting a loud buzzing and lots of read errors on perfectly fine discs with no scratches, so it was clear the disc drive was going bad. Nintendo sent me a letter with some advice that advises you not leave your Wii sitting on carpet(due to fibers getting in the fan) and to keep it in a well ventelated area away from any form of smoke (cigarettes etc.) When my Wii did return the save data and all of my VC games were still there and fine.

Awesome! An excuse to open up my Wii.

I've opened my Wii in the past (to install a clip-chip to sort my semi-brick -- that strategy failed so I removed it and it's sitting in a box somewhere). It's not as simple as opening a Gamecube, but it's really not a big deal.
If you have to send your Wii in for repair, it is probably a good idea to copy all of your save game data to an SD card, incase they have to replace the unit entirely or they have to wipe the memory for some reason. Then when you get it back, you can just copy the save games back over to your Wii and you will not have lost any progress... Course I wasn't able to do this when my Wii broke... Since I couldn't get it to go past the health and safety screen when it first turned on.
Don't be such cowards people, if you have half a brain you can fix the problem yourself. I was totally aware of the risk, so carefully assessed the innards before doing anything crazy. I've opened up two of them now and I didn't fudge either one.
Opening one's Wii is a highly sexual experience, I recommend it to anyone.
