Topic: any "can't miss" wiiware games?

i've probably bought close to 20 VC games but none of the wiiware stuff looks very enticing (to me, anyway). is there any "can't miss" game(s) that i need to further investigate? it all looks kind of blah to me, so any guidance is appreciated. it mostly looks like kiddy stuff or puzzle games and things of that nature but i'm sure there has to be at least 1 game i'm missing out on.

If you like NES Mega Mans then you can't go wrong with Mega Man 9.

There are quite a few "can't miss" games (more than 5, less than 20). For example, FFCC: MLK and FFCC: Darklord come highly recommended.

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (3900 Wii Points)
  • World of Goo (1500 Wii Points)

They are generally considered the best,
and I can only say the same: These 2 are my best WiiWare downloads.

Most of the classic remakes are very good. Mega Man 9 is my favorite of the Mega Man series. It's challenging but it's not unfair, it's level design is fun, and unlike other Mega Man games, I found a use for each weapon you get. Like the new Mega Man, the remake of Tetris and Dr. Mario are very solid and I'm sure the remake of Bubble Bobble is as well. Besides those, World of Goo is an absolute classic.

If you like a challenge, I'd suggest playing Colorz. There's quite a few good WiiWare games on the service now - Mega Man 9 is equally disturbing in its difficulty and the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games are good, solid titles that will last at lot longer than most Certainly I'd recommend Dark Lord over Crystal Defenders R1/R2 anyday - just watch out what you send on DLC, you don't not a lot of it!

For platformers I'd recommend The Three Musketeers which, despite the odd wonky controls moment, is great fun. For retro-themed games I'd recommend Mega Man 9, Bubble Bobble Plus and I personally liked Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure but seem to be in the minority for that one. I suppose I'd better be nice and say that Niki: Rock and Ball seems to have a bit of a fan base. I thought it sucked.

There's not many FPSs on the service but Onslaught is a great score based game, whilst Water Warfare is a solid if unspectacular multiplayer FPS with good online and quite a few varied (if slightly unbalanced) play modes.

When it comes to puzzle games, the service is loaded but I don't rate many that highly. I'm not a big fan of the ArtStyle games but Cubello is definitely my pick of the bunch. Puzzle Bobble and Same Game are what you'd expect from that sort of game but are again, solid. MaBoShi is a quirky little title with a nice download-to-DS feature and Actionloop Twist should be in everyone's WiiWare collection (just be prepared for aching wrists)

If you like shmups I recommend Star Solider R (which is admittedly short, but still great if you're into beating high scores) and Space Invaders Get Even, which has been the subject of considerable controversy (because much of its content is DLC you pay for and if you buy the lot it takes quite a bit of storage and money) I personally really liked SIGE even though it does not have a proper ending but again the game focuses on beating high scores more than anything. Sadly, neither game can hold a candle to some of the shooters on VC (my favourites being Soldier Blade, Star Parodier and Lords of Thunder)

There's a few racers on the service, but all us Brits have for now is Heracles (ugh) and Driift (which I haven't purchased) I don't think the HVS racer is much to write home about though. I'd stick with Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero X for now, in all honesty. I deliberately avoiding mentioneding SPoGs Racing as a racer because it's so good (cough)

Finally, if you're after RPGs, The After Years is a fairly good retro style game, and the DLC should add a fair bit of longevity to the main game (which is really short imho) Personally, I'm on the fence about it having spent 800 points on Breath of Fire II which is both longer and considerably more enjoyable imo.

Well, there are some other games I thought were quite good for the money.

  • Swords & Soldiers
Great package for 1000 points: 3 different races, 30 stages in story mode, multiplayer and lots of challenges. Money's worth.
  • Texas Hold'em Tournament
Online and offline Poker with Miis for only 500 points. Five different tables to unlock in tournament mode. You keep your virtually earned money and can show off in a leaderboard (or buy Mii clothing and brag on the poker table).
  • TV Show King
If you are into multiplayer and have 3 firends around and 4 wiimotes this is a great very polished party game!

I'm on the fence about Crystal Defenders R1 and R2 and Darklord. I liked them all, but...
CDR1 was too short and too easy. CDR2 is just too short and shows not much new stuff (but it's harder).

Darklord is too expensive with 6700 Wii Points for the complete game. The DLC is overpriced all the way.
The basic game (1000 WP) feels cut with all those lose-ends on the map, and the few monsters you can spawn.
You need at least all the extra monsters, stages and floors DLC to make the game feel complete

That is:

  • 1000 WP - Darklord
  • 500 WP - Monster Pack 1
  • 500 WP - Monster Pack 2
  • 200 WP - Monster: Kain
  • 200 WP - Monster: Palom
  • 500 WP - Extra Stages 1
  • 500 WP - Extra Stages 2
  • 300 WP - Extra Floors 1
  • 400 WP - Extra Floors 2
A total of at least 4100 Wii Points.

Mega Man 9. One of my favorite Mega Man games ever.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Let's not forget Water Warfare is a must download.

I rule when it comes to games. So deal with it.

There are over 20 games mentioned in this thread. The lesson here is that there are several excellent games on the service, and the official reviews are a great place to start. Try the leaders in the genres you think might appeal to you, and you'll quickly develop or discover your personal preferences and seek them in other titles. You'll find your own way in no time! Good luck.

Whilst I'd agree with SKTTR on Swords and Soldiers, I'd say TV Show King is the only social quiz game I'd purchase if I had no other form of entertainment in the house. The questions are repeated far too often and the whole thing feels cheap when it comes to the wheel of fortune. The only good thing about the game is the tacky visual theme and sound clips which ensure it feels as cheap as the effort put into it.

I disagree, the NES Mega Mans were way better.

As for "can't miss"... NyxQuest! Maybe Toki Tori too. If you have NyxQuest you don't need Lost Winds because NQ is better in every way. I think Darklord and King can be missed, both do get repetitive and suffer in the fun department for it. Darklord is no Plants vs Zombies.

Swords and Soldiers should be high on your list too. If you like simple FPSes the ones on WiiWare are also good picks but I can't blame you for not wanting them.

OBJECTION!

B+'s output is considered horrible by most people and while some like them that definitely keeps them off any "must have" list.

IMO B+ should rename to F

MaBoShi's Arcade, if you ask me, especially if you own a DS -- more WiiWare games should incorporate DS-download versions.

Outrunner

World of Goo, Megaman 9, Bubble Bobble Plus, Star Soldier R (some may disagree since it's only the caravan mode).

Overturn is AWESOME, so is swords and soldiers. If you like retro games with a new flare, try bomberman blast (read a review first) Avoid Protothea if u want a shmup. There are so many good games...if you have any extra points gift me water warfare (don't feel obligated lol)
