I think you can get gamecube games running on the gamepad with just the virtualWii modded, but to do Wii games you need to mod the Wii U as well.

It's worth doing though because it means you can control everything through the gamepad. If you rely on the virtualWii, you always need a wiimote available to navigate the Wii menu, which is annoying.
If you mod the WiiU, you can install forwarder links to Wii apps, so everything can be launched from the WiiU menu with the gamepad.

The gamepad is perfect for playing gamecube and Wii games on because their really low resolution looks good on a smaller screen whereas they look terrible and fuzzy on a big TV.

@SuperLuigi111 I'm glad you changed your mind. And yes, even though nobody wanted the Wii U (I did! And I have it!) its price isn't going any lower despite Switch's release.

One thing, though: Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is for 3DS.

More and more games have been ported to Switch, but I don't think they'll all be, and not always come with additions. Or when they do, they're not always meaningful. I, for one, have preferred DKC Tropical Freeze on Switch (I love new characters, but not if they can only be used in an easy mode), Captain Toad has exclusive stages on Wii U (and touch controls) and sold my Rayman Legends to buy it again on Switch, but kinda regret it, because beyond portability there isn't much else in terms of additions, so I could've kept the Wii U version.

Besides, even if it hadn't exclusives, and even though third-party games are just a few, it's a great system.

The argument of its graphics being "last gen"... I don't think so. It came out in 2012, when Xbox One and PS4 weren't in the market yet, and graphics wise it could compete with Xbox 360 and PS3. True, systems released years before, but it was at the same level. Nintendo systems don't always respond to generations logic. Look at the Nintendo 64, for instance. Coming in 1996, midway between 32 bit systems and 128 bit that started in 1998 with Dreamcast.

But anyway, Wii came out in 2006, when the technically way superior Xbox 360 and PS3 were already available, yet it was a tremendous success, in fact outselling the competition.

Superstar Saga is for Wii U, you can get it on the virtual shop or whatever it's called, you're thinking of the remake.

Unfortunately Wii U's graphics were indeed last gen. True, it came out before PS4 and XBO but only by a year I think. When the Wii U was announced, I actually figured it was a late addition to the current gen at the time. Yes, you're right that Wii had outdated graphics too. And I think everyone including me really realized that as time went on. And that is why, along with a poor amount of really good 1st party titles, a lot of my peers sold the system. I think I fully tapped out of Wii by 2008 and got a PS3. Came back briefly for Super Mario Galaxy 2. I was just done with the gimmicks and the graphics.

That being said I think the Wii sold very well because it seemed very innovative at the time, I remember getting very swept up in the "Nintendo Revolution" movement. Where as the Wii U, was odd and I didn't know what to make of it. Was it an upgrade to Wii, or a whole new console? It's release at the tail of the generation was weird too.

But I digress. I'm not a Nintendo hater (why would I be on here if I was hehe), quite the opposite in fact. But I always readily acknowledge their missteps. I think Gamecube is one of the most amazing consoles ever made. The Wii, not so much. The Switch to me looks amazing, and I look forward to playing it some time in the next 6 months after I've enjoyed the Wii U.

@Dezzy So I have to look for a more recent method, it seems. I don't know if you can give me an exact "name" or something that I can look for because I don't know if links are allowed in here? Thanks!

In my opinion SNES, N64 and GameCube are Nintendo's best consoles. (New) 3DS and Wii U are also very interesting for their unique games, backwards compatibility and Virtual Console. Wii U has HDMI and HD so it's the definitive console for old and new Nintendo games. (New) 3DS has a lovely 3D effect and also plays GB, GBC, GBA, DS, NES and SNES games. There are many Nintendo things to love if you look at their past.

Wii was a fad and was marketed as such. I enjoyed a lot some of the games but I was also frustrated with its controls except in games using the pointer like Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition and Metroid Prime 3 and the fun Wii Sports/Resort. Wii was a disappointment for all my Nintendo friends, I had fun with it but also frustrated with the controls and the low resolution.

Wii U was released one year before Xbox One and PS4. Like Switch, it was underpowered and overpriced at the time. It was the first almost-HD Nintendo console with HDMI and it got love from Nintendo while they were seriously supporting it, with lots of great games, some of them have built Switch's game library.

Wii U was abandoned too soon by Nintendo. Its last two years were almost dead with a few titles like the disappointing Amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash and Paper Mario Colour Splash and it was replaced four years after it was born. But, in the meantime, it got games that were good, deep, polished and well received that have been listed on this and the other threads like Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Project Zero Maiden of Black Water, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, The Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Breath of the Wild, Yoshi's Woolly World...

Its games, the off-TV feature, the apps, the backwards compatibility and the HDMI port make Wii U the definitive Nintendo console.

I'd say GameCube, Switch and (New) 3DS for best Nintendo consoles (not in that order). Wii U would've been in the top 3 if there weren't so many droughts and if Nintendo didn't abandon it early. You can tell pretty clearly that in 2015, Nintendo directed most of their attention to NX. From Mario Tennis Ultra Smash and Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival to the 2nd half of 2016 being extremely empty.

@SuperLuigi111 No, it isn't. Superstar Saga is a Game Boy Advance game that you can purchase for your Wii U via Virtual Console. Let's not forget about that. And the remake was for 3DS last year. But there is no "Superstar Saga Wii U". It was GBA all the time.

If the Switch doesn't have an excellent virtual console in the near future, and if the upcoming Switch first party games are just ports of Wii U games then I don't see the point of owning a Switch besides portability. I don't care about portability for a few reasons. I'm a Dad with 4 kids, a wife, a mortgage, and a lot of ecclesiastical responsibilities. So for me I have very little time to get my game on. When I do have time I like to spend it playing games mostly with my kids. I also don't want my kids playing on a console they can take everywhere 24/7 and miss the most important times and seasons of life. For me the Wii U has what I wanted the Wii U to have the whole time it was Nintendo's main platform. Great first party games that I can afford to purchase. The ability to have off screen play when I want to hang out with my family while they watch a movie that I'm not interested in watching for the 5th or 6th time. And an excellent Virtual console with access to N64, DS, GBA, Wii, Gamecube (more gamecube games would have been amazing), NES, and SNES. Really I couldn't ask for a better system for my life right now.

I don't have the same life as you but I feel the exact same way !

The Wii U is fantastic from its concept to its proposition in terms of gaming and possibilities.
My favorite Nintendo System with the SNES.

@WiiUGuy It's perfectly understandable and all depends on personal circumstances. I still own a Wii U and will never sell it, but in my case I have an 11 month old daughter and she's moving all the time, and my wife doesn't like (I understand it) when I play videogames in situations where I could be playing with the baby or just watching her.

That means my play time is when they both are sleeping (staying awake on weekend nights or getting up really early) or when I commute in working days. The latter is my real chance to play, because at night I'm too tired and early in the morning my daughter is awaking earlier and earlier lately. So that's when the Switch makes sense to me.

In the end it all comes to personal circumstances. Both are great systems.

How do you have any time for gaming at all? I struggle to find time to play long games and I have no kids, no wife or girlfriend and no "ecclesiastical responsibilities" (unless being a Jedi counts)

a reason I can think of is if you've never played Splatoon for the wii u, then its a good reason as any to own a wii u.

@Dezzy How did you find the whole injecting Wii/Gamecube titles to Wii U system process?

I've looked at that gbatemp guide before quickly and was put off by the time demand it seemed to involve. I have over 100 Wii games ripped to my HDD, but they're all trimmed, and my reading of the injection method is that you must use full ISO images, no trimming, so those games will all need re-ripping (unless there's some way of batch adding the missing empty space to the ISOs), and I'm already stressed about the wear to my Wii U's optical drive having ripped all those games in the first place (some of struggled to read).

Tl;dr - is there a quick way of doing it?

@gcunit

I'm not sure what trimmed means in this context?

I did it with regular ISOs though. It wasn't that time consuming at all. Assuming you have modded both the vWii and Wii U. That's the only requirement.
