I'd never owned a console until last year, and never one by a Japanese company. I feel like I've missed out on a whole world of gaming.
I figured I'd change that by buying a Wii U, since I'm also developing a game for that system. But I'm pretty cash strapped, and just had the idea of getting a 3DS instead. It's cheaper and seems to have more games from Japanese developers.
thats difficult Wii U has alot more features but 3DS has alot more games overall i would say buy a Wii U and if the game your developing sells well buy a 2DS
3DS. You can tell it's better by the amount of people who bought it (roughly 40 million) and the amount of people who bought the Wii U (roughly 6 million). But they both have good games, but the 3DS has more good games.

What ?! Sales numbers do not have anything to do wth the quality of the product, especially if one of them had a head start lol
depends on what you want.... i have both but for now have been plaing the wii u more. 3ds is so convenient, but i enjoy thre the visuas much beettter on the wii u

Which should I go for?
Only you can answer that. Is playing on a big screen with good graphics important to you? Is good sound important to you? Is portable playing important to you? Is local multiplayer important to you? And so on...
How much do spend at home vs being on the go? If you're out and about frequently, the 3DS is the better choice. If you're at home with access to the TV, I would vote for the Wii U.

Do you normally play alone or do you have friends/family/partner who play games with you? For local play the Wii U is and will likely remain unrivaled for the next few years.
I'd have to say Wii U just so there can be more of an install base for it.
Personally, I'd have to recommend the Wii U, too. The 3DS is great, but since you're going to be developing for the Wii U, why not get one so you can become more familiar with how other companies utilize the GamePad to help your brainstorming sessions whenever you try to decide what YOU are going to do with it?
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
3DS's best games
OOT3D
Kirby Triple Deluxe
SSB4 in summer
MK7
Super Mario 3D Land
Pokemon X/Y
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/ Omega Ruby in november
A Link Between Worlds
Yoshi's New Island
Animal Crossing New Leaf
VS:
Wii U:
Wind Waker HD
SSB4 in Winter
MK8 on May 30
Super Mario 3D World.
Nintendo Land (not THAT great at all)
Game And Wario
Bayonetta
Wonderful 101

Wii U:
Wind Waker HD
SSB4 in Winter
MK8 on May 30
Super Mario 3D World.

I have to say 3DS.
Why not compare with the best Wii U games? Why exclude titles like Tropical Freeze, Lego City: Uncover, Rayman Legends, Trine 2, Deus Ex, etc while including NintendoLand and Game & Wario?

This was my thought as well. If it's an indie game that's being developed, I think the Wii U implementation for future games must be top notch to get through the noise of all the arriving indie titles.
We have this conversation a lot, and it always seems to wind up the same. Obviously, there's no single answer, but I can help you out a bit. This decision is all about quality vs. convenience.
I have both systems, and if I were at home more often, I'd be on my Wii U so often, I'd temporarily forget I even have a 3DS. However, I go to school and work almost daily, so my time is a touch limited. Having my 3DS is super convenient and I've actually managed to almost run out of things to play. (Gotta finish Bravely Default eventually.)
As for games, it's a similar story. 3DS has a much bigger library, but I feel that the Wii U has a better library and certainly a higher quality one.
On top of that, if you're developing for the Wii U, the 3DS is no substitute. In this rare occasion, I suggest the Wii U, rather than telling you to figure it out. I definitely suggest checking out the eShop Indie scene. They have some good ideas, if not always well-implemented ones.

I would choose......3DS! I mean look at this!
Stunning work from western publishers! Truly harvesting their 44 million install base with top-tier AAA software such as Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth, Skylanders Trap Team Gimped Version, and much much more!
Who cares about lacking software such as Pikmin 3, Assassin's Creed IV and Mario Kart 8?????
3DS is a flawless system with a HD screen and innovative 3D effects!

This, choose based on your preferred way of playing, do you want something to play at home or to take with you?
The stuff I like on the 3DS is generally the stuff designed properly for it that was retail elsewhere. Or if it is a port it is the best one or the original one.
Kokuga
Yumi's Odd Odyssey (I have the PAL version but I cannot remember its name)
Nano Assault Ex
Steamworld Dig
Retro City Rampage DX
Jett Rocket 2
Fractured Soul.
Sega 3D Classics.
A Link Between Worlds.
I think overall I prefer the DS / GBA or PSP libraries of games to what we currently have. (I am not into the type of JRPG the 3DS has lots of or 30fps platformers).
I don't like the ones that just reuse old Wii technology. (They are the same price as the totally new ones made for the Wii U also).
“30fps Is Not a Good Artistic Decision, It's a Failure”
Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.

Doesn't 3DS have undecover too? Anyways, forgot about those, but still there are alot more on the 3DS too.
Easily 3ds, Wii u is terrible for anyone's first console. If you were considering a home console get the wii because it's cheaper and aside from techinical features offers the same level of quality from games (you'll mostly be playing wii games on wii u anyways). 3DS has something for everybody and really would be a great first console for anyone. 3DS has great titles for every genre, it's portable, has a steady release schedule, has been far more consistent with game releases, and is an experience you'll never forget.
