After updating the Wii U to the latest software (about a week or so ago) which integrated the quick start menu and boosted the overall speed of the console, my Gamepad has gone a bit loopy.
First when i booted it up right after the update and it went straight to the Quick start menu it was fine. Had a nice play on MK8, after having a break and turning the console off and coming back to it hours lately i press the power button on the Gamepad and the quick start menu comes on, but when i tried to start a title it said something like "Too far away from the Wii U console, turn off then turn on again closer." i thought this was just a one off and i did this really close to the console. (about 10cm away) and it booted fine, i turned off the quick start menu after that, thinking it was a problem.
And it seemed to turn on fine for a week or so... (just a side note my Wii U is about two metres away from my bed where i play.)
Now when i turn it on even over a meter away it will say move closer, but the console will still turn on. I then have to restart the console and turn it on literally 10cm away for it to boot up together. When it's all up and running it's fine I can play really far away even upstairs but it's only the booting up.
Sorry for the long post, but is anyone else having this issue?
dude same problem! My wiiu gamepad has lost around 50% of its range due to the update. Its been over a week or two, and no solution yet. Still trying to figure out the solution
edit: actually my issue is a bit different, as my range reduced the whole time, not just only during the system boot up.

Sucks that yours is during gameplay too. :/
I do hope this gets fixed, kind of an annoyance more than a problem.
@MegaScizor Strange, I did a range test right after the update and didn't notice any difference (it's still 5-10' shorter than I would like for off-TV play).
All in all I think that the update was generally a good thing, ... but I would prefer the option to automatically continue to the WiiU Menu/WaraWara Plaza as soon as they have loaded.

This is still possible by turning on the console with the Pro Controller. That is what I'm certain of. I guess everything that is not the console or the gamepad will direct you directly to the WiiU Menu. If I understood you correctly that is. :3
Something that I've noticed recently is that when my WiiU is in sleep mode, the home button on my gamepad flashes randomly.
At first I thought that it was a little unanounced addition in the update to alert you when there's a miiverse notification. But since then, it's flashed randomly on 3 other occasions.
Has anybody else had this problem?
