@Blue_Blur sorry, I'm just going on now
Also I'm going to be a bit busy soon so I can probably only play around half an hour to 40 minutes at most.

@yokokazuo: No need to apologize, just wanted to make sure you knew we were starting.

I can only play for about an hour, so 40 minutes works for me. Unless someone else also quits, then me and whoever else could do a twin squad for a little while longer.

Got a connection error at the end there for some reason, but it was at the results screen so it was fine. Hopefully it is the only one I get today.

Also @DreamyViridi I'm also on wireless. Usually my connection has been fine, but my internet has been having problems recently and it has slowed down at times which has been causing some lag in Splatoon for me.

I'll have to do something quick anyways so you guys can go ahead and do a twin.

DreamyViridi

OK, looks like I don't really need an Ethernet cable. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'll give it a couple of days and with any luck, the problem will resolve itself.

@DreamyViridi I had terrible internet up to two months ago. (So bad I couldn't actually play Splatoon), but a wireless signal now runs fine. It's probably your router, if it's a little bit old, which shouldn't be a massive problem.

@Blue_Blur: I'm a little iffy about Tri-squads. I'm really hoping to breach into A rank for the first time.

AHHH! Why are many players in Rainmaker acting so stupid? Without exaggeration I can say that I'm comfortable carrying the rainmaker and usually I can defend myself well by dodging enemy shots and carefully taking them out after figuring out where they're standing or what their movement pattern is. But because of the sluggish nature of the rainmaker, they player carrying the RM is always vulnerable from behind. Then WHY the hell do all my teammates go in front of me and no one has my back? Why not put two players in the back and one in the front? I don't get it.

Kinan wrote:

Ha! Rainmaker is easily the worst mode for me. I get bogged down trying to force the thing through, especially if my team is useless. But since I can't exactly sneak around their defences, partially because of the ink near their base, I often get stuck and/or killed. No, I prefer both splat zones and tower control. There I can make an actual difference either by forcing what I want through, or by being able to pick off the enemy team. Not being stuck mothering over someone who is taking the rainmaker in the wrong direction or nobody backing me up and clearing a path for me to take.

Also @LztheQuack, don't worry about it too much. Getting used to a stick-shooter if you've only ever seriously played shooters with mouse 'n keyboard takes some time.

I feel you about some of those things (Splat Zones is my favourite), but I think "forcing your way through" is the wrong approach. You have to watch everything carefully and decide for the right approach. Not always should you barge through into certain doom (with exceptions, of course).
And I strongly disagree about the controls part. Sure, you can get used to play a shooter with a controller, but it never offers you the same movement freedom and aiming precision as a mouse or gyro controls do (some of my friends have played shooters with controllers for many years or even half their life and still I only see them playing effectively with a shotgun or machine gun, rarely hitting headshots.
Twin-stick controls are really inferior and this shows especially in Splatoon.
Even if you do manage to get really good with a controller and to make many headshots, it's still like learning to drive a car by driving a boat on the streets. It's not what it's supposed to be used for.

Spoony_Tech wrote:

@LztheQuack: Speaking of controls which was mentioned above please tell me you're using gyro? If not learn it fast as twin sticks might get you to B rank but you may struggle from there on.

Absolutely!

MasterWario wrote:

The thing is though, if the other team thinks it's a deathmatch that's a free win basically, especially if the map has multiple entrance ways. I can't tell you how many times everyone was fighting in/around the center and I just grabbed the RM when no one was looking and ran to sub 20 distance.

Yeah I also experienced that sometimes and always wondered that the hell the enemy players were doing. Then I just made my way to their base and it almost felt like cheating, it was too easy.

Also, the commands could be improved, Booyah and C'MON is almost useless. Common could mean follow me or it could me what are you guys doing?!?!?
I think Something like Follow Me, Help, Don't Jump, Stay would be much more beneficial. Even Good Job would let others know you approve of something

I agree that the commands could be improved, only I think not the way you suggested. In EU, it says "nice" and "to me", which is both useful. Not everytime players react to the "to me" command, but the more experience they have, they more they follow your instructions. "Follow me" and "help" would be redundant, since they're basically the same as "to me". "Good job" is already covered by "nice". And I think "don't jump" and "stay" would be useless, because the situations in which you would use them are extremely time-sensitive, the danger is immediate. As soon as you realize that it's dangerous where you are, it's already too late to signal. Even if not, the amount of time between the signal and your teammate noticing your signal and realizing what awaits him/her there, is just too short. Most of the time they will see the "don't jump signal" while they're already in the air.
Instead, I would change the superjump in a way that you're blinking (like in Mario) and invulnerable for a few seconds after landing. But of course, at the same time you shouldn't be able to shoot until you're vulnerable again. In my opinion (and I thought this right after the release of Splatoon) the superjump is really messed-up and forces you to not use it as often as you should be.
But still I also would expand the commands from two to four.
I would add "defend" for when you're leading and there's not much time left. Because sometimes your teammates just run forward in the last seconds, then lose the Zone(s)/ Tower/ Rainmaker to the enemy and your team loses because no one played more conservatively.
And I would add "danger!" for when you just got splatted and now the enemy is approaching your base (also in the final parts of the game) while your teammates don't have any map awareness and run around some place else instead of jumping back to the spawn point. Out of desperation I sometimes spamm the "nice" button (although usually I hate it when someone misuses a button like this) after I got splatted because that's the only command you can use while the splat cam is active.

Bluefin Depot on Rainmaker AGAIN. the absolute worst level to rank up on since each match is almost certain to go the distance. I'm shocked to see how often this is the Rainmaker map that they choose

Really? I think RM is the best mode on that map (although SZ isn't particularly bad there either). And what does it have to do with ranking up? You should always be prepared to go the distance. And you don't rank up by winning before the time runs out, but by scoring many wins in a row.

wisdomsprince wrote:

Note To Self: I will stay away from Arowana Mall (Splat zones,Tower Control), I will will stay away from Blufin Depot (All), I will stay away from Moray Tower (All) I will stay away from Hammerhead Bridge (All). It's not that I don't like them (Blufin Rainmaker is starting to become an exception) but for Levling up these are my no go levels. It would be nice if they had a non-ranked mode with other modes where I didn't have to be so competitive (sigh)

?! I don't mean to be rude, but I really don't get what your problem is. Yes, I also have maps and map-mode-combinations that I don't like that much. But most of the maps you mentioned are pretty great for the respective modes. Moray Tower is awesome on RM and also very nice with SZ. Hammerhead is maybe the best map for SZ (the Museum could become the new #1). Arowana Mall is great for SZ and RM and also very decent with TC. Bluefin depot is great for RM, good for SZ and okay for TC.
Instead of gathering up so much dislike for those combinations, maybe you should instead use the recon mode and try to figure out how to play those maps? They all have their unique elements which can become very important in each respective mode.
Also, you shouldn't think about leveling/ranking up so much. It should happen automatically. If you know the stages and play well, you will rank up. But it won't happen if you just obsess with leveling up instead of learning the specifics of the maps and becoming able to play on every map and mode.

Question: do you guys pick gear based on the abilities more or the look?

90% abilities, 10% looks. Although, most recently (meaning: I now even use the white shirt with a tie or the red checked shirt, because I use different weapons than before), it's 100% abilities and the looks only matter if I really have a choice between two items.
You don't notice how your inkling looks ingame anyway.

I liken it to being the bishop that is sacrificed to take the queen. Whilst I'm running mayhem behind enemy lines, my teammates can generally rally and avenge my inevitable demise.

I don't need defence up, as no matter how much I'm stacking, if I miss the ambush, I'm dead 9/10 times. The other times is when I pull off a spectacular move, like splatting the entirety of te other team in two hits and a suction bomb. (Which was pretty awesome).

The main problem I face is sniper fire

I hear ya, I also often sacrifice myself for the ultimate goal, like distracting an enemy in the most decisive moments etc. Defense Up and Damage Up aren't very useful in general, as they don't change the amount of hits needed to splat or be splatted (except for the .52 gal). And I found it relatively easy to splat snipers with the Dual Squelcher (or the Splattershot Pro). You just have to stay moving so that the Sniper can't splat you. Usually that works for me. You could even use the Jet Squelcher, Sheldon himself even describes it as the perfect weapon against chargers.

Can I ask everyone here how they connect their Wii U to the internet? Before, I was wireless and the connection was near perfect but recently, there was a broadband issue in my area and since then, I think the Wii U's been struggling with my setting (evident by lag spikes in Smash). I'm thinking about going wired but I don't recall what I need for it...

I'm using wireless, but also had thought about getting the adaptor. You can either get the original one from Nintendo (Wii or Wii U, doesn't matter) or buy one of the many third party products (haven't tested them, but they're supposed to work just as well, at least according to some Amazon reviews).

For Rainmaker in Triggerfish, I like to go the side route, and surprise the enemy from that side. It works well when one or two members take that route, while the other teamates distract them by charging forward. I always take the side path with the Rainamker, since I think it's too hard to get to the goal stand by going straight to the base.

Totally agree! I find it way more harder to go through the middle and always get angry with my teammates if they go down that path if it's not dictated by the actual situation (which so far never was the case). So I always take the side route and so far it was mostly successful. I remember when I discovered this way for the first time and was completely surprised of its effectiveness since the side route partly consists of the hanging net that you have to walk on.

Man that post got really long. I just wanted to vent off because of some stupid RM teammates but then I say how many pages I had missed since the last time. And then I kept reading.
