a) I played a 3vs3 TW match, both teams had only 3 players at the spawn but 4 players each in the score list.
b) Apparently, when you unlock/roll your subslots for the first time, it's not random at all.
Before the Splatfest, I had the Red Vector Tee with one sub slot of Inksaver(main). After the Splatfest, I added two slots and unlocked them in ranked. The second slot gave me damage up and the third slot special saver. After that I wasted my remaining sea snails for nothing to correct the subslots and was so fed up that I loaded my most recent backup.
The first thing I did was add two slots to the Red Vector Tee and play ranked with it again and... the outcome was exactly the same! Damage up on the second slot and special saver on the third slot. That can't be a coincidence, right? I'm guessing the gear you're wearing or something else (someone on Squidboards wrote the slots are determined when you buy that piece of gear) sets the variables that determine what the subslot will be. At least at the original roll, I don't think this applies to rerolls too, otherwise they would always turn out to be the same.
Who's up for some splatoon goodness ?
Also @Shani the slots are predetermined at the beginning of the game , as such with some chance you might get a gear with the same ability in the main and sub slot , without rerolling.

@Megapokepaul: At the beginning of the game or when you purchase the gear? Actually, on Monday someone on Squidboards gave me the so far most detailed explanation. The user Hitzel first wrote:
"The moment you own a piece of gear, its slots are determined."
So I asked if he knew more and this was his reply:
Just RNG when you purchase or roll gear.
IIRC, the data structure for gear is gearID, slots unlocked, slots leveled, slot1 value, slot2 value, slot3 value, new! icon, experience points. I think I'm missing something and maybe the order. Either way, those slots values are just assigned a hex value of 0-12, and eaxh of those 13 numbers relate to an ability.
Until last Monday I had always assumed that it would be just random. But that explains why I got more triple subslots of the same kind by just unlocking gear than by rerolling.
Oh and I'm out, gotta go to sleep. Maybe some other time.
