I don't think City Folk release has to equal no WiiU game, but what was said does make sense, we've been able to clearly predict stuff like this in the past based on release patterns. They released Wild World as well for EU. That's 2 Animal Crossing games in one system that aren't new. It seems more like they're pushing it again because of all the other AC stuff they're doing, and figured they'd scoop in some extra money. The dumb WiiU board game, the amiibo, Happy Home something-or-other on 3DS, then for some the VC release.
It might not mean anything, they've pushed DKCR multiple times, even right after Tropical Freeze kind of started to slow down on people they were like OMG THERE'S A WII DONKEY KONG AS WELL GUYS!!! Seemingly to entice WiiU owners to get more games even if its a Wii game, because they wouldn't advertise DCKR Wii up against the 3D version most of the time, until now. Maybe to keep it separate.
Also on a side note it seems really weird that the NES Remix pack sold enough to get a special seal box. I never streetpass anyone playing the 3DS version, and it seemed like most people who were interested at all in the WiiU version got the download version(s).
Not everything needs to be released as a neat little trilogy. There is such a thing as a "Duology" (2 titles) or a "Tetralogy" (4 titles). I'm not saying that they shouldn't make more Donkey Kong Country games, and I may be going a little off-topic here, but it annoys me when people expect every franchise in the entertainment industry to be released as an arbitrary "trilogy", even when it would not, in any way, benefit the original vision of the franchise (cough The Godfather).
A main series Animal Crossing isn't happening (City Folk to act as a replacement)
We don't know that for sure yet. Wii titles are also appealing to those who still haven't upgraded to a Wii U or were unable to afford Nintendo's upper-crust titles back in the Wii's prime (people are still buying Skylanders and Just Dance games on Wii, so it would be sensible for Nintendo to try to appeal to them with the "Selects" range). Nintendo have announced very few games for 2016, and considering that HD assets for Animal Crossing already exist in the form of AC Plaza and AC Amiibo Festival, I have a good feeling that there will be a new AC, if not on Wii U, then as a launch title on NX. Animal Crossing would actually be perfect as a launch title given its "evergreen" presence at retail, and the fact that it can be played over a span of several years.
People were willing to pay $100 for this...can you really blame Nintendo?
I realise that, but this reprint will not include the box, booklet and music CD, and it costs about the same as the collector's edition when it launched over 5 years ago. The value in the original package was in the additional contents and the fact that it was a "collector's item". For $30, Nintendo are only selling the ROM dump on a disc, and nothing else, which is atrocious value, irrespective of the quality of said ROM dump.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
@TheLastLugia: Ah, thanks for the advice! I missed out on the first two Pikmin games growing up, and didn't get a Wii U until this past summer. Unfortunately by that point it was nigh impossible to find reasonably priced retail copies, and I'm not a fan of downloading retail games.

Sadly I already have most of these games or am not interested, but I am all for Nintendo actually dropping the price on some of their games for a chance, though I did pick up Steel Diver for 3DS for $1.50 yesterday at work. There is nothing more frustrating than a customer not buying something for Nintendo because it is so expensive. People are always coming in for Wii stuff at least but even the best games for that are still $25 - $30. But I have sold so many Xbones and PS4s since I started working at GS and literally two Wii Us (I got hired in October). We can't even keep the other two in stock. People with Wii Us only buy one or two games. Yesterday I had a girl choose to buy an Adventure Time game on Xbone over Wii U because it was cheaper.
So these selects games are good! I wish they would do more. Next year I am hoping for MK8, Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Maker. If they are even still supporting the dang thing! Seriously, I expect the Wii to hang on forever but the Wii U I am dubious. Just as a GS employee.
@Yellowkoopa: Why would you be suprised that Nintendo is still manufacturing Wii games? The core foundation of the Wii U is a Wii! Also, Nintendo recently put out a Wii mini with no internet connectivity. Wiis only run on discs.
Hopefully these become more frequent, Nintendo really needs to do more price drops of their games
Hopefully these become a REALITY b/c I was just thinking last night that Nintendo hasn't actually officially rolled these out yet. At least I haven't seem them in stores or online. And the original ad/tweet whatever it was has since been deleted. Can't get more frequent until we get the first ones.

Agreed. I was in my local Walmart recently, and they still are trying to sell new copies of Metroid: Other M...for $50 USD. As much as I love Nintendo, they don't always help their case with the prices.

@rjejr: Yeah, the fact Friday's Direct was just a 6 minute Pokemon Direct instead of a standard length general Direct makes me start to doubt the existence of the price drops. If it does end up fake then that would kill off SMD's credibility (all it takes is 1 error for a leak to be disproven).

That's either retailer's problem or lack of communication on Nintendo's part, Gamestop has had Other M new for $10 for the longest time now, and I believe it's only $20 at Best Buy. Same thing happened with Bayonetta 2, I saw it at Target for $60 for who knows why despite Nintendo saying they were dropping it to $30(GS and BB had it for $30)
I like that the Ntinedo rep has a name. I don't know who Scott Moffitt is (his parents must have been poets though - 2 t's, 2 f's, 2 t's really?) but he just earned himself a stalker. This news still isn't on the NOA news page or twitter feed. I have them bookmarked, but I'm not sure why I bother. (I keep hoping they turn into the Sony US/EU blogs.)
Oh, and for everyone who was worried about the $30 CAD prices, the news release says $19.99 US. That's a great price for either Pikmin 3 or SM3DW. Who knows, maybe disgruntled Wii U owners will even pick up AC:City Folk again?
As always, thanks for the heads up. Very nice news on a Monday morning. And perfect timing too.

I really hope NoE announces a new wave of Selects, and include Wii U games. There aren't many titles left on either systems that I'm dying to get, but quite a few I'd buy if the price was right.
I'm just happy that Pikmin 3 will be available at retail for a decent price. Finding it at a decent retail price is absurd right now, and I'm not a fan of digital downloads unless they're the only way to get a decent game.
