I didn't find a topic devoted to just talking about this game, which I thought was odd considering how much everybody wanted it and was complaining about it not being out in NA yet; so if there is already one, sorry. I have never played this game before, and mostly I am wondering if it is worth it if I already own, have beaten, and love the original Metroid? Is there anything different besides updated graphics and a map that probably just serves to make the game easier? This and Metroid Prime: Hunters are the only two Metroid games I have not played (I think), and am trying to decide if I should get it or not.
Zero Mission is more of a re-imagining than a straight-up remake. The graphics are obviously enhanced, but so are the story and structure - although the map is mostly similar (there are extra areas), individual rooms are often different, and cut-scenes help keep you immersed. Plus you have more abilities than in the original. The only negative is that the game is a little short when compared to Super Metroid, Fusion or even the original (not by a great deal though). I think an obvious Metroid fan such as yourself should enjoy it. I certainly did and I've played the original to death.
I just watched the trailer for this game on the eShop, and it looks absolutely nothing like the original Metroid. And not just in the graphics department (I know they were updated) but most of the time I didn't recognize where Samus was or the enemies she was fighting and she does so many things that you can't do in the original. I definitely think I will pick this up at some point now.
It's the NES Metroid as if it was remade as an SNES game on par with Super Metroid. More signature Metroid upgrades, more expansions, an extra hour or so of content added after the ending point of the original... it's one of the best examples of a remake. And as an added bonus, the original NES game is an unlockable, obtained after beating the game.
Can anyone confirm if the original NES Metroid is unlockable in the Virtual Console version of Zero Mission?

@Xyphon22: Get it, it's literally the best game in the series IMO and like you i've played/beaten every one other than the DS one (okay i'm working on Prime 3 but whatever). It's a bit short and a bit easy compared to say Super Metroid, it's most comparable game in the series, but it just flows so well and the game is so exceptionally fun it's truly a marvel to play.

I can confirm. It does unlock the original Metroid just like the cart does.

Thanks! I just unlocked the original Metroid this morning. Very happy!

This is one of those games that will never get old. I loved Metroid since the original NES game, and this game takes a great game and makes it even better still.
