Definitely getting this! Apparently, for online matches it's possible to disable powerups/gimmicks and have a straight game of tennis. That makes a huge difference as far as I'm concerned - and thank god for no motion controls. I'll send you a friend request later, DiscoGentleman. Anyone here from the UK buying this?
@DiscoGentleman: Really? It's £40 in the UK, about €55 in the rest of Europe then. €55 is a little too high for me to pick it up day one. I mean, that's the same price as Xenoblade X, I know which one I'll be getting then. Perhaps later down the road when retailers lower the price...
It's not 55 in the rest of Europe, it's 45 with some sites still offering a higher price because they haven't updated to the later introduced lower price.
I revisited Mario power tennis this afternoon, just to get a reminder. I'd almost forgotten just how good this game's gameplay is. The visuals are also amazing in progressive scan on a high end CRT. Ultra smash might be 'just another Mario tennis game', but if they can preserve and even evolve that level of refined and incredibly fun gameplay into a robust online game then I think we'll have a seriously fun game....
You can even see a little glimpse of the other 4 un-revealed characters in the character select screen. Toadette, Bowser Jr., A Sprixie Princess, and the fourth one looks like Dry Bowser.
Might consider getting this, but the 3DS game got boring very quickly for me...kinda wished they went with the RPG-ish route here. Only reason why I loved the GBC game. :c

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I have never played a Mario Tennis game so I will probably be getting it since you can play online. I wish they would have put the Koopalings in it though. Oh well.
@Rexcalibr: I think the only one they should put is Larry Koopa:
If they put the others then the hatred toward them would come again because they invade the roster (even though honestly I think that 25 years after their introduction in Super Mario Bros. 3 having all of them playable for the first time in Mario Kart 8 was really overdue)!
You can even see a little glimpse of the other 4 un-revealed characters in the character select screen. Toadette, Bowser Jr., A Sprixie Princess, and the fourth one looks like Dry Bowser.
I was going to avoid saying the names of the silhouetted newcomers, but I guess anyone going into the forums for this topic might expect spoilers... also, those silhouettes do hide nothing at all.
I'm honestly rather disappointed by the roster. My main guy; Shy Guy, is not included. Toadette was a very obvious (although welcomed) inclusion and Dry Bowser is just a disappointing return. Sprixie is the only surprising newcomer, and it doesn't wow me as much as the series actually using the expanded Mario universe.
C'mon, at the very least they could have included someone like Kamek, he pretty much counts as both a Yoshi and a Mario series character (though admittedly, I do find both series do little to differentiate each other outside of gameplay). Heck, I'd even have loved to have seen some of the more interesting veterans of the series such as Birdo or Petey Piranha... or Shy Guy.
I'm still getting the game of course; I'm a big fan of the Mario Tennis series gameplay. It's just a shame that I'm not too thrilled about the character roster... but hey, maybe there will be DLC. I'd totally buy Shy Guy!
Sprixie Princess is unexpected. Dry Bowser, Bowser, Jr., and Toadette are cool.
I'll miss Shy Guy and Diddy Kong, though this roster looks suspiciously small compared to how big Open's was, even with all of its skins.
Well...
Mario Tennis Open has 16 characters plus Miis, the other 7 colored Yoshis and Metal Mario; Mario Power Tennis has 18 characters. The N64 Mario Tennis has 20 characters, with 16 characters being from the Mario universe. The GBC Mario Tennis and Mario Tennis: Power Tour have MANY characters (29 and 38 if I am not mistaken) even though the Mario universe characters are not that many (9 and 6 respectively).
So, at least we have more characters than Mario's Tennis...
And to stay a little on topic...no Shy Guy? Boo! (pun intended)
I thought he was in the older games? Why would they cut the best character??
He is in N64 Mario Tennis and Mario Power Tennis (along with Fly Guy) so you're correct, unfortunately he was cut already in Mario Tennis Open... I am wondering if the cut characters are due to development deadlines, because like in this case, some modern rosters have choices I find quite strange(Sprixie Princess but no Shy Guy or Diddy Kong).
The amiibo support is great for this game and I must confess I am a big fan of Dry Bones Bowser but I think they will take some flak for the character roster.
Very unexpected, in a bad way, to me. I've never like the Sprixie's, but if others like them, I'm okay with the Spirixie Princess being in the game. I feel that more people would've preferred Shy Guy or Diddy over her. At least we got Bowser Jr., Dry Bowser's a good choice, too. I'm disappointed that there's no Koopa, either. I'm not getting the game anyway, but I feel bad for the people who are getting the game that wanted Shy Guy or Diddy.
I'm pretty fine with the roster, especially since Toadette is playable considering she hasn't been playable for the previous Mario Tennis games. As for the Sprixie Princess, I don't mind her and I'd rather play as her than Queen Bee from Mario Kart 7 lol.
Nintendo has never been really consistent with character choices for their games... well, maybe except Smash Bros. (to an extent, if you consider the absence of Wolf, Ice Climbers, Pichu etc). So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised... at least, I can still play as Toad/Rosalina. XD
For some reason though, my favorite characters in Open were Bowser Jr. and Diddy Kong.
God first.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the Sprixie being playable. Honestly, I like how the roster looks (so far, don't know if it's the full thing). I'm not big on the fact that Tennis-staple characters like Diddy Kong are missing in action, but I'm not going to blame the current unlockables for their absence.

Not too worried about roster - as long as the gameplay is great. Looking at the new multiplayer video, it looked very frenetic, perhaps a little more than previous games...
