After some time away from the game due to lack of inspiration - still don't have good enough ideas for new levels - I updated one of my first courses with a Checkpoint and tweaked some of the rather unfair passages. Though it is still difficult, I hope now it'll get played and enjoyed a bit more:

One update I wish they would add to this game is the ability to choose a certain game style for the 100 Mario challenge as well as the difficulty. So if I was in the mood to play smb3 I could choose that and the difficulty I wanted and only get those courses. Or we could keep it on random to get all courses still like it is now.

@99mushrooms: I can imagine Mario World being the common pick if they added that. I wonder how often people play the mode?

New super Mario is my least favorite, other than that I would probably play them pretty equally depending on what I'm in the mood for. Lately I have been in the mood for the original Mario bros style.

Hi guys, honest question: has anybody noticed...uhm....how do I put this nicely...a lot of people are REALLY bad at Mario?

I'm doing levels mostly in the classic style, and I'll put (what I think) are simple sections in where players need to just jump from platform to platform. Maybe hop on a red turtle to bridge a longer gap, landing on a fairly large ledge on the other side. Nothing crazy like 10 million bowsers or bullet bills coming at you - just simple platforming.

I have about 4 levels out there in this style, and they all have like 4% completion rate. Woof. Now, I don't have thousands of plays, only like...20 per course lol. But still, that's like...only 1 or 2 people beating my courses, which I thought were nearly death-proof.

Freeon-Leon

@rallydefault: I know! I'm starting to get tired of this because most of the times those peope that can't beat the level don't even bother starring it, even when the level is good. And not even that hard!

I have nearly ~400 stars as of now so I think I'll start making some Super Luigi U-like levels. I don't care if I get few stars and a low clear rate

This topic comes up all the time on various forums, I'm sure it was discussed about 20 pages back or something here too. It's just another problem that plagues SMM. Most of the player base sucks so making anything with any kind of depth is a waste of time.

I was watching a really terrible streamer the other day, I submitted one level and had I known he was so bad at Mario I wouldn't have even bothered, I was watching him play one of those one screen puzzle deals and it was obvious what was required to progress but he still couldn't get it even with hints from the creator of the level. Eventually he finally got it and restarted because he didn't even know he did it right! That’s just how inept he was, it was at this point I said to myself he'll have no hope passing my level, about 10 more minutes of this and he finally gave up played a few more levels and then played mine.

First time he stuffed it up, second time he got it right and then knew what was expected throughout the rest of the level, subsequent times he kept making the same mistake over and over again despite getting it right the second time. Short term memory problem or something but it's easier to blame the level than admit you suck at it...

SMM has unfortunately made bad Mario players worse, checkpoints are now expected regardless of how easy/short a level is, power-ups etc are expected to re-spawn from pipes because doing otherwise is a "flaw". Never mind the challenge you as a creator had in mind. You must consider the feelings of the bad players who if unable to complete a level the first time will consider it a "troll" level.

This is because they aren't giving you a star, they're giving themselves a star for completing the level so if they are unable to complete it for any reason despite being well designed level then no star for you. That's the SMM player base for you.

Here is my first SMW style level.

So far, all my levels were SMB1 style. I found it to be a little more challenging to make a level in the SMW style. For example, in SMW, a player can pick up shells and use them however they like, so I had to design the level with confinements so that you couldn't throw a shell in the wrong place. In SMB1, the shells can't be picked up so there doesn't need to be too much confinement . Another problem I had was with Cape Mario's ability to hit the ground and instantly killing everything in the screen. I had to create a ceiling so that he couldn't do that in part of the level, because the bob-omb in that screen was critical to the course, and you couldn't get through the course without making him blow him up a wall.

I really try hard to make my levels fun, but I also really try to make sure there are no ways of getting stuck. This is where I found the SMW style to be a challenge. Anyways, hope you give this one a try. And if you get stuck somewhere, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

@shredmeister: Nice level. It felt like going through a really huge airship, the aestherics did a very good job too. Though I would've liked to see something crazier at one point, some kind of climax for the level, but it's nice as it is.

Very nice level, easy but fun and it looked good. I especially liked the big bomb part you mentioned. I gave it a star.

Thanks @Kinan !!!

Groundless levels with moving platforms have never been my favorite style but I enjoyed this one. It wasn't hard but had a couple challenging spots to make it fun, it took me a couple tries to get through the solid line of blocks on tracks inside the warp pipe. And I died a couple times earlier just figuring out the best jumps to make. (Which turtle heads to bounce of and which ones you can skip over, things like that) I gave it a star.

I agree, but also you need to think in percentages. I would say that 4 tries to clear an average course would be pretty good. But if it takes me 4 times to beat it and I'm the only person that played it, that's only a 25% completion rate even though I did fairly good on it. I think the completion rate should be based off how many people played it and how many completed it not how many deaths there where and how many completed it. Still, on most courses that would be low because people do seem to suck at this game but the clear rate would be a little better.

And yea, I have seen plenty of gameplay videos where people don't seem to understand what they can and can't do in the different game styles and can't figure out a basic puzzle. Example, throwing a shell up to knock a p switch or something down.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm getting a bunch more plays on my levels, and a few stars here and there, but I the problems persists. I also find it hilarious that streamers, many times, are actually pretty poor gamers. And they're the ones making money from playing games! Ah! Infuriating, eh?

Excuse me, fine folks... I've come back to pester you guys once again with a request. I have 49 stars and I need only one to be able to upload ten more levels (and my style has improved a lot since I stopped uploading levels). So, I wanted to ask if anyone could play and star just one level among mine in order to allow me to widen my array of playable levels.

Thanks in advance.

I finally found closure with my Ghosts in the Machine level. I changed some minor things that bothered me when watching the level in a Twitch stream. I guess, the level is still not perfect but very close

Therefore here is the level without a version number:

I am working at my first underwater level at the moment. And it is a lot of work making a underwater level fair and fun. Do you have any hints for me?

@Freeon-Leon: What was the bug in your level?
@AlexSora89: I gave you your 50th star
