As a mediocre console with no identity and no selling point aside from its games (much like the Gamecube), and tons of controversy behind it.
Is gaming not about...the games?
It is, but having a console that just has exclusive games is kind of disappointing nowadays, we have several different console choices with exclusive games, there needs to be more than that to impress. Especially for Nintendo, which prides itself on innovation, what does that say about them if they make a console that fails to live up to that standard?
The disappointing thing about today is those multiplatform games regardless of which platform they are on.
In order to make them multiplatform they lose the reason to be on a console in the first place.

Does anyone think the Wii U may someday be viewed similar (though not AS highly acclaimed) to the Dreamcast? They're both innovative systems that were/are brought down by lack of technology compared to their competitors and an absence of third party support. However the first party support was excellent and needs to be applauded. I think, while it may not be as legendary, the Wii U someday will be viewed as the underdog console with a lot of charm that just couldn't compete with the big boys.
Please don't compare the Wii U to any of my beloved SEGA systems. Each of their consoles had something that made them unique — without resorting to cheap gimmicks — and they are my all-time favorites for a reason.
My Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast will forever be in my memory. They made me proud to call myself a gamer, in a time when people thought gaming was for antisocial creeps.
The Wii U will, at best, be remembered as the Wii that never caught on.
Hit a nostalgic nerve did I? And the Gamepad is only a "cheap gimmick" because developers are barely using it.
The Wii U already blows the Sega Saturn away in terms of quality. That system was always a technological neanderthal that couldn't even produce 3D.

Yes every console has exclusive games, but the Wii U clearly has the best. That's what matters. Xbox One tried to be "more than a gaming console" and it shows, only now that they've distanced themselves from that notion has the console started to pick up any steam.
Man, for me this couldn't be farther from the truth; the 'U' seems to be ahead of its time, while the Wii simply lagged.
The nostalgic vibes I carry from that era will belong to the GameCube, a true antecedent to Nintendo Style gaming.

You're looking at it in terms of its competition in 8th gen. I'm looking at multiple generations. Sure, maybe Wii U has the best library out of the 8th gen consoles, but that's not saying much. Would you say it has a better library than the Wii? How about the N64? NES or SNES? I would say that among Nintendo consoles, it has one of the worst libraries so far, there's not a lot of creativity or innovation in most of these games and quite a few uninspired sequels.
The system, which proved the Wii brand was nothing but a fad.
The system with no identity, with Nintendo themselves leading the confusion.
The Wii U version of Gamecube, with even worse third party support.

The Wii was the most innovative home console since the N64. I don't know what you mean by "lagged".
The Wii will be remembered as a cultural phenomenon. Something that got everyone playing games, and something that, for the first few years, had universal appeal to all ages. Something that really tried to do something new.
The U is the system that turned the other way, stagnated, and appealed to a very small group of people.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

The Saturn has better games than the Wii U overall. Comparing like for like take Chronicles of Mystara the Saturn version is perfect (Other than it only supports two player local co-op). The Wii U is the least buggy of the modern ones but rubbish.
A system for Nintendo fans and them alone that never took off like the Wii due to its design not being wise or flashy enough to captivate random buyers or gamers looking for an alternative second system and as such had little support outside of Nintendo and those they control with games.

I have hope that in the future many will see it as a great gaming device that saw no love during it's initial release.
It's the same hope I have for the Vita.
