Topic: How will the Wii U be viewed years down the road?

Does anyone think the Wii U may someday be viewed similar (though not AS highly acclaimed) to the Dreamcast? They're both innovative systems that were/are brought down by lack of technology compared to their competitors and an absence of third party support. However the first party support was excellent and needs to be applauded. I think, while it may not be as legendary, the Wii U someday will be viewed as the underdog console with a lot of charm that just couldn't compete with the big boys.

I think it'll be remembered like the Wii.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

But with less shovelware/intrusive control gimmicks.

No, the Dreamcast is adored, and for good reason, not only did it have a great selection of arcadey, unique, exclusives.....it also had a "ton" of games for just having a two year lifespan.

The Dreamcast was ahead of its time....

The Wii U is a confused system with some great, quality first party titles. But I don't think it will be remembered as fondly as SEGA's last system, even if the Wii U is more successful.

I'm not saying it'll be as legendary as the Dreamcast, but I'm wondering if it'll be a cult classic that will be viewed better with age like the Dreamcast became.

Yeah, probably, especially if Nintendo puts out some absolute classics, I don't think Super Mario 3D World cuts it, as good as it may be..............but I do believe that Mario Kart 8 will be viewed as one of the best games of its generation.

No. The similarities between the two consoles are actually pretty few. For one, the Wii U won't be the end of Nintendo consoles. For two, the Dreamcast was counterintuitively mildly successful for only being around for two years. The Dreamcast had it's life cut short by the company being utter crap at selling consoles. In a way, the SEGA Saturn is partially to blame for the Dreamcast's death, but in another way, Sony's PS2 wrecked everything that generation, so once it hit store shelves, there was no hope left for the Dreamcast to sane SEGA's buns. It was a glorious high note at the end of the company's reign.

The Wii U is more akin to the GameCube and even then, only slightly. It's a console with great exclusives that will be remembered fondly by those that owned one, but will be over shadowed by another perfect performance from Sony.

LOL.
Agreed.

I think the Wii U will be remembered in a better light than the Wii, or it has a good chance of making it so......

The Wii is remembered as a hugely successful console that was ultimately a bit shallow and flawed. It kinda left Nintendo astray after all of the hype subsided.

Plus the Wii U is an underdog, sure, it gets a lot of crap, but even in the mainstream press, a lot of people root for it as the little guy with some great games.

It might be seen as a somewhat more successful Dreamcast. If Nintendo takes steps to bring their market back, it may be viewed as a big misstep. But only time will tell now

I think it will be viewed as a misstep, but still, I expect it to sell around 16-17 million if it continues at the same pace and around 25 million if Amiibo takes off.

It will be remembered as a gamecube. A great system with lackluster 3rd party support, but some solid, innovative first party titles that are some of the best games ever.

People who don't know a thing about videogames = A tablet for the Wii
The other system fanboys = a crap console that's underpowered, plays kiddy games and the same games since the 80s.
Nintendo fanboys = The most amazing console ever because everything Nintendo does is amazing no matter what.
In reality = it's a good and underrated console mostly resembling the Gamecube, it was good and had great first party games but other than Nintendo fanboys no one really noticed it. Also by the way things are going now it could be remembered as the console that every third party game developer skipped out on.

The Gamecube still had decent third party support, better than the N64 and Saturn, many people downplay that aspect, the Wii U has almost none.

That would be cool, the gamecube is the third best Nintendo system only to the Snes and Wii.

A great underrated (and underpowered) console, with amazing exclusives and no 3rd parties at all -> Dreamcast 2.0

Dreamcast had a crap ton of third party exclusives, it was Capcom city for those two years, EA was the only huge publisher that refused to release games for the system.
