Sorry for another metroid related article folks. It's just been on my mind a lot lately. So, after the backlash against other m, and the ending of fusion (which doesn't leave much room for a sequel) do you think metroid should have a reboot? I personally think they should reboot it. Make a game that appeals to a wider audience. (like japan, as well as the west, because apparently japan isn't a fan of metroid) They should pull a Zelda ocarina of time 3d, and add a hint system to help newbies, but make it optional. I don't care what kind of style its in (2d, first person, third person, etc). I just think the series needs a reboot so that it can reach a wider audience, and reach it's full potential sales-wise. And no, I'm not talking other m's version of being an easy metroid game for newbies. I'm saying, make a game like super or prime, but give newcomers a hint system, and reboot the story.

Backlash against Other M? Whatever do you mean? All of the reviews I've seen average out to a B- or C+ it seems, but definitely not enough to consider it to be backlash: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroid:_Other_M#Reviews.
Metroid doesn't need a reboot. It may need to rewrite Other M, or just declare it non-canon, but there's still a lot of room for the series, especially after the ending of Fusion. I get the feeling Nintendo is afraid to put any kind of detailed story in Metroid, which I'm sure a post-Fusion game would need. Other M may have ruined any potential of that.

I personally thought it was fine gameplay wise, but the story was a mess. Many other people think even more negatively than that.

I'd like a post fusion story, but I also doubt that Nintendo would be brave enough to actually write a competent one. Although their efforts with kid icarus and fire emblem have been fantastic, So who knows?

I'd like a new entry in the series but I don't know if 'reboot' is the right word to use. By 'reboot' do you mean remakes? I'd rather have a new game.
I think reboot is a silly word, especially for video games. In any given franchise it's easy to have spin-offs, remakes and games in the series which are neither per se but are quite different gameplay-wise.
I'm talking like a donkey Kong country returns style reboot. A whole new game.

@Tops: The TC is asking whether the series should get a "reboot", essentially a reset of the canon, bearing the same name and similarities in plot, but completely disconnected to any previous game, plot-wise.

I don't think the series needs to be rebooted, the only part of the series that needs to be retconned is Other M. I'm all for a post Fusion game though.
I don't think a reboot is necessary. We just need a continuation with more of what made the earlier games good, with a story as far away from Other M as possible.
Other M doesn't need to become non-canon for Nintendo to continue a game post-Fusion, though I would definitely suggest Nintendo make a Metroid V a return to roots which I think can be done in spite of Other M and Fusion being heavier in direct storytelling. Have Samus land on a brand new world to hide from the pursuing Galactic Federation, have the corrupted sect of the Federation eventually track her down as she gathers resources (upgrades), have her confront these members and their followers and end with her sending a broadcast to the Galactic Federation at large exposing this sect and their operations. Have SPD1 and Retro Studios finally work together to get this game right, because really I think SPD1 nearly shoot themselves in the foot with their corrupt Federation story. That's all I have to say about a Metroid V, as, in all honesty, it's not a Metroid game I really want to see.
As for a reboot though, I would hate the idea. There is still a ton of potential within the series' current stories. Nintendo hitting the redo button and basically admitting they've failed with their handling of a 25+ year franchise would devastate my interest. Not just with Metroid either, but Nintendo overall, since Metroid is my favorite series in gaming as it is currently.
The series does not need a reboot. A remake of Metroid 2 is much needed, just like the remake for the original was much welcomed on the GBA. I want to see what comes after Fusion. Metroid 5 is long overdue.

Does it matter if the Other M story is bad in this case? They can just make a game with its own story in the Metroid universe. I don't think a "reboot" is the right word though.

Yes, it should be. The timeline, like with Zelda, is just limiting now. There's no reason Metroid Prime should be happening in the past and Other M further in the future. Just start with a clean slate, keep all of the gameplay and narrative elements; chozo, different suits, designs, phazon, metroids, etc (and none of the narrative from Other M) and it'll be great.
Think about it; if Dragons aren't extinct in Dragon Age then Metroids should be contemporary in Metroid.

The Federation could have more Metroid DNA hidden away somewhere.
