I liked TOK's random battles quite a bit more than TTYD's, which were generally repetitive, spammy nonsense. Once the ring system becomes more challenging, every battle becomes a miniature puzzle, and I found that to be constantly engaging.
@Snaplocket I brought up Final Fantasy to illustrate what might have happened to the battle system had they stuck with the RPG style of combat. However, since they jumped that particular ship with Super Paper Mario and never went back, it's obviously diverged even more so.
Rather, the point was more that no current RPG series of any significance has the same combat system that it had 17 years ago, so any current Paper Mario would be unlikely to resemble TTYD much even if they hadn't made such a radical shift. You can read plenty of discussions regarding FF and the other series I've mentioned to see how these changes have gone down.
On a more positive note, if anyone does want to play a classic 'paper' RPG of the TTYD variety though, you could take a look at Bug Fables.
