Hi all, I couldn't find a thread for the mega drive mini so I thought I'd make one for general discussion.
I'm looking forward to it but I'm gutted the tower of power isn't coming west. I'm thinking of ordering one from Amazon Japan, does anybody have any experience of ordering to the UK from them? Is there any quirks or differences from Amazon UK? I might get the Japanese crash n sane trilogy in the same order, the thought of Playstation mascot Crash on a Nintendo console published by Sega is just too much to pass up!
Also does anybody know if the UK mega drive mini definitely has the expansion port? Just so I know the tower of power won't be (any more than an indulgent) waste of money!
Maybe the Mega Drive Mini will come out on 19th September 2019, and I am having it for Christmas. However, if SEGA was to release a Master System Mini, a Saturn Mini, and a Dreamcast Mini, then it would be an entire SEGA Classic retro mini console collection. How about that? Great, isn't it?
Old school games, retro games, Nintendo, SEGA, PlayStation, you name it! đđ
Thanks @BlueOcean I really appreciate it! I guess I will dive for the Japanese tower of power, I've been holding off a bit for a few reasons, not limited to the hope of a western release announcement!
Not sure about crash still though, but I might get the two psikyo collections from there, I can't really seem to find a standard edition release and date for them in the UK, just the limited
@ralphdibny I'm happy that I could help you! I'm going to get the European Mega Drive Mini although it's a bit sad that it doesn't include the six-button controllers.
@BlueOcean fair enough, I am actually looking forward to getting the 3 button controllers as I already got a pair of the 6 button controllers that retro bit did a while back (I actually got 4, two usb and two for mega drive) so I'd like to have some usb versions of the 3 button!
@ralphdibny I was checking the Japanese and European versions of the console and they are a bit different. I like the European version more. The US version is not being considered, that's not even a Mega Drive and it also has the three-button controllers. Do you prefer the European version too?
@BlueOcean lol yeah, I think I prefer the Europe version as it is similar to the one I'm familiar with but I guess I'll have to make do with the Japanese tower of power, at least the mega cd doesn't have Sega CD written on it!
Honestly I haven't even checked the games on either region, it will probably get little use apart from being decorative but I'll probably use the controllers on my raspberry pi. I was under the impression the only game that used the 6button pad was street fighter tho but maybe I'm wrong?
@ralphdibny There is another game according to something I read but I don't remember which. I don't think I'll be playing Street Fighter on Mega Drive Mini so not big deal anyway,. The console looks awesome with the real buttons and everything, it looks better than the SNES Classic Mini and that one is awesome too.
@BlueOcean the mini consoles are very desirable, even the PlayStation mini....I'm gutted I spent ÂŁ90 on it when it came out as I recently bought a second one for ÂŁ15....lol
The reviews seem to confirm the mini is everything we hoped it would be. Iâm not preordering, Iâll wait for a price drop or some sort of deal, but itâs definitely on my radar.
The original 6 button controller was released to tie in with Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition (I got both for Xmas one year). As far as I know it wasnât really used for many games (the two street fighter games, Eternal Champions and a few others) and had compatibility issues with a handful of games (Alien 3) is the one I remember. I still have it and the instruction manual lists the games with issues.
I was debating with a friend (who is a bit older than me) and he claims the 6 button controller was more iconic than the 3 button. I disagree, as I was a school boy during the mega driveâs time and I was the only one who had a 6 button controller out of everyone I knew (in the UK Nintendo didnât have a big presence. The NES was around, very few people has a SNES. It was mainly Gameboy. The real âconsole warâ was Mega Drive vs Amiga!)
@Gamecuber I'll definitely get it, it looks as high-quality as SNES Classic Mini or more. As I always say I was a Nintendo fanboy until this generation but I've always been open-minded so I have always played other consoles too, I always thought that Sega fans were nicer than Nintendo fanboys, many of them being smart-arse... still are.
I almost bought the Sonic Mania, disappointing game compared to 2, 3 and Knuckles, special edition with a junk Mega Drive replica and the price was the same as this superb mini console. LOL
@Gamecuber Three-button controllers were more usual in Europe but the six-button controllers were considered a magnificent upgrade and compared to arcade and SNES. I didn't know some games have those compatibility issues, what issues are those?
I went ahead and preordered my Genesis Mini after seeing footage of it. The game list looks really solid (even though there's no Sonic 3 & Knuckles...but it has some games I never played before too, such as Monster World 4) and emulation is pretty much on-key (take THAT, AtGames). It's shaping up to be a really good mini console. It'll go nicely with my SNES Classic
@BlueOcean itâs funny that you find Nintendo fans to be less nice than SEGA fans, I think I found it the opposite way round đ. SEGA definitely marketed itself as the âcoolâ and âedgyâ brand when I was a kid and Nintendo didnât have very much of a grip in the UK. Computers such as the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore 64 were all the rage in the 80s (so much cheaper than NES, games were ÂŁ2-ÂŁ3 compared to ÂŁ30+ for NES!). SEGA started to get recognised from about 1987 (there were these adverts for the Master System on TV âdo me a favour; plug me into a SEGA!).
Gameboy arrived in 1990 and was seen as a fun, quirky little system. I think many of us first encountered Mario through Super Mario Land. However, I got a Game Gear instead and the full colour, back lit display blew the Gameboy away...until the batteries died 90 mins later đ. My sister got a Gameboy and I tried to play it as much as possible.
But the first time I saw a Mega Drive I fell in love! Sonic 1 looked amazing and no loading times! This must have been â92.
Nintendo didnât really get that serious in my circle until the N64 but again, the PS1 was dominant. However, 4 player local multiplayer tops anything the PS1 could do anytime.
As for Sonic Mania Iâm surprised you didnât like it if you liked the older games. To me it was like being back in 91-94 when the classic games came out! The physics are spot on, the legacy levels with a twist are superb (though the newer fan made levels are weaker). To me it is âSonic 4â and if the new Streets of Rage is of similar quality weâll be in for a treat.
I will definitely get the Mega Drive Mini, but will wait a while for a price drop; Iâm almost certain we wonât get supply issues like with the Nintendo systems.
As for the 6 button controller, it was an upgrade, but I only ever used it for street fighter. I always went back to the 3 button for everything else. The compatibility issues meant things such as lag, unresponsive controls or just plain âweirdnessâ. As I said, the manual lists the games that have issues, so there might be a copy online somewhere (I probably have it at home in a box but wouldnât know where to look).
âYou swapped three different N64 games for Pokemon Stadium? Whereâs your pride? Your dignity?!?
@Gamecuber Exactly that, the recycled levels in Sonic Mania are amazing but the fan-made levels and music are so poor, new music is tacky and new levels are amateur messy gimmicks. I was so excited when they announced Angel Island, my favourite Sonic zone, as DLC and so disappointed when it was just a cut version. Second disappointment. The physics are perfect because they were made by Christian Whitehead who had already done the perfect 1 and 2 mobile ports. It's sad that Mega Drive Mini doesn't include Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Yes, Mega Drive was super popular in UK and Europe, Nintendo has always been a quirky thing here. Even today, Switch is more popular in Japan and US than in here. Nintendo has always been more popular in Japan and US.
Super Mario World was (is) incredible. People compared Sonic 1 with Super Mario World but for me they couldn't be more different and both did great and different things. It's not even the same genre to me.
Super Mario 64 also was incredible, the Nintendo 64 was amazing and did things nobody had seen before.
By the manual do you mean the original controller manual?
@BlueOcean yeah I meant the paperwork that came with the 6 button controller. Titles with compatibility issues were listed there (Alien 3 is the only one I owned that I remember was on the list).
Nintendo was definitely present in the UK to some extent in the late 80s/early 90s (I remember playing a NES on a display in a big toy shop called Childrenâs World) but SEGA was far more prevalent. I remember reading about SNES in gaming magazines and playing Super Mario Kart in an electronics shop, but it had little impact on me. I knew of Mario from the cartoon series, the Gameboy games and the NES trilogy (McDonaldâs did a happy meal tie in when Mario 3 was released) but Sonic was by far the more popular character.
I did start going to the US on holiday from â88, so my memories are mixed with that, so much of my Nintendo nostalgia probably comes from there, where Nintendo was much more popular. I remember seeing Mega Drives (or Genesis which confused me greatly when I was little) already in discount stores by the early 90s.
