I was looking around on the Internet the other day and I found this interesting game. It's a FDS port of Mario Bros., but it has better graphics and things that were in the arcade version that didn't make it on to the black box version (the invisible platforms in later bonus levels and the icicles in later levels). From what I found on it, it had advertisements for Nagatanien (a Japanese food company) products and one for Super Mario Bros 3. Apparently, it also had another gameplay mode where if players scored a certain number of points they would get a code that they could send to try and win prizes like a copy of SMB3. It's a shame this one never made it to the West. They could've just gotten rid of the second gameplay mode and contest, translated a few things, changed the ads to show a picture of a Mario character or something like that and made the Japanese setting in the cutscenes to something more Mario-like. It looks more like the arcade version (although the Mario and Luigi sprites don't look any different from the black box version) than the black box version did.
Supposedly the game did make it to the NES, but it was a rare PAL-exclusive 1993 version (also known as the "Classic Serie" version, though the only other "Classic Serie" game I've heard of was a Pinball reprint).
