I have a genesis model 1 that appears to be missing some sort of lid or cover from the bottom of the unit. Inside is a flat red colored cartridge looking thing that can be removed. I'm trying to find a replacement lid that i could maybe order from an online shop or something. What do you call this and what's the big flat cart looking thing with the metal contacts for anyway?

Is it an expansion port cover? I am not very familiar with the Sega Genesis but I had look online and it looks like there are replacements available. I am pretty sure the expansion port is used for the Sega CD.

@Truegamer79 yup, this ^

I had a look at eBay in my own country and it looks like people are selling 3d printed replacements under part name of "expansion port cover"

Or of course you could get yourself a Sega Mega CD to cover it with!

See ya!

Yes that is likely just what I'm looking for. Thanks guys!

The only other thing that expansion port was used for, in the very early days, was something called a "DS-6". A device that allowed demo consoles running in stores to have six game cartridges loaded in at once, and allow the player a button on the outside of the cabinet to choose a game to play.
