@WaveBoy: You must not be counting the Mega Man X games, as those 3 are the best Mega Man anything ever released. The NES does have the best Mario in SMB3, but Super Mario All Stars is a superior port/remake anyways. Combined with the best Zelda/game of all time in ALTTP, a superior Metroid, and classics like Super Ghouls and Ghosts (far better than the NES conterpart) and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy it really isn't close. The NES is exceptional, the SNES is perfection.

Sega Genesis had many great games (World Of Illusion, Chakan The Forever Man, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Beyond Oasis, Greendog, Rocket Knight Adventures, Championship Pro Am, Victorman, Earthworm Jim, Cool Spot). Some of these are also available on the Super NES, but I would choose the Genesis.

Next, Gamecube. It has the best controller and started many great IP's from nintendo. Pick up Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Battalion Wars, Eternal Darkness, Star Fox Adventures and more for what I thought was a great system!!!

If you make sure your store tests it first, buy the NES, but only if it works completely (without hefty blowing and a game playing for more than a few minutes before going funky).

If you really want to go retro, buy an Atari 2600 and enjoy some of the firsts!!!! Donkey Kong is even on this one!!!

Yeah, probably late to this, but get a SNES. The games are getting expensive now, but the SNES has an amazing library that has aged well. Of course there are the Mario games. DKC trilogy is my favorite on the system. Tons of good RPGs (these are getting pretty expensive). Great Co-op games like zombies ate my neighbors, Super Bomberman and Turtles in Time. Puzzle games like Kirby's Avalanche. One of the best sports titles of all time as well. NBA Jam TE (OK maybe not of all time, but a heck of a fun game). Some good budget games to start out a collection to get a few games on the shelf would be claymates(platformer with weird save system), Pilotwings, F-Zero, StarFox, Beavis and Butthead and Final Fantasty Mystic Quest can all be had for under $20 in the states. I started my SNES collection a few years ago, right before collecting got expensive. I could easily double what I paid for the games. Not going too of course. If you have a DS or Wii you should start getting a big collection of those games as they are still cheap. Who knows maybe some of them will be worth something.
