I always thought the zx spectrum was great and the amount of games on it (around 16000 I think) where really really good they still do about a hundred releases a year now . I started this thread on 7/august/2019 I'm surprised there hasn't been one yet. Anyway I hope to hear some good stuff about the zx spectrum (and did anyone here or a SINCLAIR 512k ZX spectrum + 5)

I never had a ZX Spectrum, as I wasn't around during its heyday and I live in the US. As far as I can tell, it was quite popular in the UK. But I do have a Retro Gamer magazine issue, from 2011, that has a beefy feature on the Spectrum and its games and accessories (such as a tape drive and a peripheral that allowed users to plug in cartridges and controllers). It also showed a compilation of Ultimate's (that's Rare) games like Jetpac and Atic Atak. I think it had like 11 games spanned across multiple floppy disks? It has a checklist of all the available ZX Spectrum games for collectors, too.

Quite popular would be an understatement. The Speccy and Commodore dominated here for years. Even the NES and Master System didn't catch on because we were all about the computers. The GameBoy, SNES and Mega Drive changed all that of course.

@Fandabidozi did you have anything else in Australia around the time of the spectrum?

Anyone ever have any +2 games , you know a Sinclair 128k as spectrum +2 game not the 48k or 128k but the +2 bit ? I can't remember most of them

Amstrad here, loved the Mastertronic games, they came out on Speccy/C64 as well. If I remember rightly orange was Amstrad, red was C64, yellow was Speccy.
Games I have memories of, Caves of Doom, Finders Keepers, Soul of a Robot, Kane, Darts 180.
And only £1.99.

I had a Spectrum 128 back in the day. I got the James Bond Pack with the black light gun. For me though it was all about the Dizzy games: Magicland, Treasure Island and Fast Food!

Favourite game ever RICK DANGEROUS, the Firebird label had some of the best games ever made ,they were maybe better than ultimate play the game . I just sent some stuff to mutant caterpillar games to be fixed can't wait to get them back. I saw there s a little fault with the Sinclair zx spectrum vega, you get a loose wire in the front .the emulator itself is only worth about 2 euro anyway . I need to download all them games to play on it .look forward to that. Anyone know how much GB OR TB MICRO SD CARD I need to fit all them 16000 games.

Heh, I had the 256k +2, @Gamecuber .... Jack the Nipper, that Batman game & Paperboy are the main ones I remember

@BruceCM you mean the 256k +4 or was it +2. Was it anygood. What sort of games were on it. Where would I get one these days

Ninfan

BruceCM

No idea if you can find them still.... @Ninfan; mostly, games were also on Commodore 64 & so on, anyway My bad, it was 128k but it was the +2, being actually made by Amstrad, who'd just brought the Spectrum rights off Sinclair

@BruceCM pretty sure that was the one I had too. It had a built in cassette deck to the right of the keyboard.

I remember at the time I really wanted an NES either the pack with Super Mario Bros and Duckhunt or the much coveted (at the time) one with Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (the word ‘ninja’ has been banned from use by the government as it ‘encouraged violence’ apparently! They even had to change the theme song...)

My folks got me the Spectrum instead as they told me it would be better as I would ‘learn how to use a computer not just play ganes’.

I learnt to type ‘run’ to start games in the 2/3 years I used it!

Once I got a Mega Drive the speccy went in storage never to be used again.

To be fair to my folks, Spectrum games were a few pounds, much cheaper than console games at the time.

That's the one, @Gamecuber .... I didn't know about consoles at the time I did learn some basic but long since forgotten it all
My cousin had the 64k Spectrum & was quite envious of mine

My first gaming memory was The Cartoon Adventure of Dizzy on the ZX Spectrum +2. Has loads of games on that machine. And now i soon, I hope, will get a brand new ZX Spectrum as I was one of the backers of the ZX Spectrum Next a couple of years back. Will see if it ever comes to fruition and how it performs. Though I’m also looking forward to that new Dizzy game that the Oliver Twins are apparently making for it.

@FragRed where could I buy a zx spectrum next. How much will they cost. I've been looking them up and can't seem to find any for sale.

If been looking at walkthroughs on You tube of games that if never cleared . At games like manic miner, P47, Rick dangerous, total recall, (fruit machine)

@Ninfan The first batch of ZX Spectrum Next are still going through testing before mass production begins, soon hopefully. Once that’s done and the initial Kickstarter backers receive them, a second wave of Kickstarter crowdfunding is planned for the next batch. As for pricing - I’m not too sure as there were different skews but the one I went for was just under £200 and was the complete unit (cheaper ones was just a board you had to create the casing and keyboard yourself and more expensive one came with wireless WiFi). Your best bet is to keep an eye on the Facebook group page for all updates.

I am currently looking online at the games I owned back in the day - see if I can get hold of as many titles as possible. There are also new games being created just for the ZX Spectrum Next as it’s an 8 bit machine allowing for bigger and more demanding games than the original hardware could do.
