Yeah, I suspected that, @Ralizah.... I've got plenty I'm at least going to try, so I'm happy

@Dezzy So while Nintendo and Sony force upgrading by not supporting the current gen systems once next gen happens, Microsoft is trying to force upgrading by discontinuing the current gen systems months before next gen launch.

What? No.

Well we don't know for sure what they're doing. But my suggestion is that they're deliberately leaving it vague because they want to see how many buy the new console.

They apparently have 10 million gamepass subscribers. So if all 10 million of those buy the new console in the first year, they'll obviously just ditch the Xbox One as soon as possible. But if only 5 million of those gamepass subscribers get the new console, they'll probably release more games on the Xbox One, to keep the other 5 million people subscribing for as long as possible.

That's my guess as to what they're doing! It's a kinda risky strategy though cos they could end up in a Catch-22 where people deliberately avoid buying the new console because they realize lots of games are still coming out for Xbox One (and the graphical improvement is quite minor), which in turn will make them hesitant to make SeriesX exclusives, which in turn will feed back into people's desires not to buy the new console. Playstation's approach seems a lot safer to me. They basically just go all-in on the new console and everyone understands you need to buy it to play their games.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

@Anti-Matter You cut the sentence as usually... Sigh.

"Many of the games showed today are Series X exclusives and not coming to Xbox One so they are fully next-generation".

@Dezzy The graphical improvement will not be quite minor on Series X and it's not just graphical differences but performance. If some current-gen games seem designed for Xbox One X/PS4 Pro and are barely playable on Xbox One S, just think of future releases with next-gen consoles available.

I don't think that they'll be trying that double strategy either. It seems that most Xbox Game Studios are making next-gen games already. Obsidian is making both current-gen and next-gen games. Microsoft is 100% betting on Series X and Game Pass, it's evident. Xbox One X has been discontinued already. If that will work or not we'll see but they aren't looking back.

If Xbox was the only platform I owned, I'd think the presentation was pretty good. Lots of artsy-fartsy games, open world Halo, some new unique stuff from their internal teams. That mashup of Honey I Shrunk The Kids and Fortnite Save the World (Grounded) could be co-op gold. And Obsidian looks like they're making the next Elder Scrolls years before Bethesda finishes TES VI, because that Avowed game seems mighty fine.

I thought that is was a pretty good show. Lots of games on display and they were right to say at the beginning “all available via GamePass” because that’s their strongest selling point.

But it seems like some of the games look and feel overly similar to PS or Nintendo first and second party titles.

I might be in the minority but my favorite Microsoft funded games recently have been some of their big-budget indie games. It seems like they were moving more and more in that direction and was hoping to see how that aspect matured. Like where was that game Sable..?

Medium and Everwild I’ll keep an eye on, but State of Decay and Crossfire... no thanks.

Added: A game I think everyone remembers on the 360 was Braid. Microsoft should throw a bunch of money at someone like Jonathan Blow to make a timed exclusive for the console.

They haven’t done much to stand out thus far.

When I watched the show last night, I was seriously underwhelmed by Halo. I put it down to the poor quality of the stream though,as on top of the stuttering, it was really low resolution for me at times. Having just watched the trailer again, in 1080p 60fps, I'm still unimpressed and left thinking, is that it?

I understand it's a game built to run on current gen hardware but this is a new entry in Xbox's bluechip franchise. A game that's supposed to showcase the power of a new console that Spencer says is the 'biggest generational leap since 2D to 3D'.
By current gen standards, it doesn't even look that impressive. I even spotted some pop in in the distance.

I am thinking of getting an Xbox, probably Lockhart if it's real, just for Gamepass, as in the long run it'll save me money. 1st party Nintendo games, Switch exclusives and Gamepass should keep me covered going forward. However, if I was one of the many 360 owners who moved over to PlayStation this gen, nothing they showed games wise would convince me I needed to go back to Xbox.

@status-204 Really? There were like all the visual styles I can possibly think of from classic shooter in Halo to Disney in Everwild with weird things in between in Psychonauts 2. Most genres and visual styles were represented.

The new game from Rare looked neat. But I understand it was the second trailer, but I don't know what it's about. Does anyone have more info on that game? SOT was mostly a multiplayer game, and I don't really play those.

@DarthNocturnal Yeah, no Tunic is weird. That game went AWOL ever since MS bought exclusivity. I hope it's still coming.

Basically it's a multiplayer sandbox game, I don't actually know what you do it in though, play with dears and glow alot?

@Ralizah The zombie deer was in State of Decay 3, so that had nothing to do with Everwild. Far as I know, Everwild is an adventure RPG about living/surviving in the wild, with people using magic and animal companions to fight and/or progress further in the game. Looked pretty good to me, personally, but fair enough if it didn't trigger you. We all have our own tastes and likes. And yeah, if you don't know Fable, it's hard to get excited for that, but all I can tell you is that if you feel you would even be remotely interested in an action RPG in an open world in which every decision you make has an effect on both the evolution of your character and the world and/or story, then you might definitely want to keep an eye on it...

@iKhan Ah, okay. My bad, then. Was only half serious, though. I'm not that much of a miser that I pick on every potential mistake that anyone makes...

@ThanosReXXX I didn't say there was a zombie deer in Everwild. Although I understand the confusion. It was just the only thing I remembered from the SoD3 section of the presentation.

Yeah, I'll keep my eye on a few of these games. Everwild, Fable, and whatever that medieval RPG was called in particular (Avowed, I think?) The Medium as well, but that was a given.

@Ralizah That was Avowed, yes. Looked good indeed. Personally, I'm also interested in that mech game. Looked like a mix between mechs, Transformers and Zoids, so it kinda ticked all the youthful sentiment boxes for me. I'm a bit wary of it being free to play, but we'll see, because there are actually some good examples of that genre out there, such as Warframe, so it CAN be done right, if they put enough effort into it.

@ThanosReXXX Yeah, I make a point of avoiding anything F2P in general. Not saying it can't be done ethically, I just don't care for the general design of games that opt for such a monetization model.

They need to make a single-player version of that PSO game. It looked decent, but I really just don't get on with online games in general.

More than anything, though, I want a new Viva Pinata. Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise is arguably the best exclusive on the 360.

I think this will be the first Xbox console I don't buy. While I recognise GamePass is a a great service, the games don't excite me. I'd place much more priority on a €60 game I'm interested in playing than €13 a month to have access to over 100 games I'm not overly interested in. The only first party Xbox games I'm interested in is Gears but I'm not going to get a console for just one game.
The more and more this gen comes to a close the more I'm drifting towards Stadia. Don't need to buy a console, don't need to be a monthly subscriber and have access to (eventually) all of the big future 3rd party games like CyberPunk, EA sports games etc.
I'm not criticising Microsoft, they're just going in a direction that doesn't interest me.

Mayo for Sam. Year TBC.
