Had a momentary build up of rage this morning when I saw Halo: MCC in the 'recently downloaded' queue, thankfully it just seems there was a (3gb) update, it hasn't (yet) downloaded a second copy for me again.
Weird with the controllers; never had an issue with the controller that came with my launch day One, but that's now both of the controllers that came bundled with my X's that have broken (right triggers on the one, guide button on the other). I don't know if the parts inside are still the same but I preferred the triggers on the launch controller, they were 'clickier' but they felt more sturdy...? Either way I'm down to the elite only, although I'm in discussion with the retailer about a replacement for both of the others as they should still be under warranty; if i want to keep the 'scorpio' one though I have to have it sent away rather than a like for like - I'm really not that attached to stickers/launch stuff if i'm honest but wondering if my apathy/laziness may come back to haunt me should I ever trade/sell it on...?
@NEStalgia just stick to Nier for now, it deserves your full attention if you want all the lovely feels post game! I hate that 'spinning plates' feeling with games, when you've got so many going on at once and it feels like each week you complete them all by just a few%, but if you don't then you know there are classics you'll never get around to?
I find myself in that weird position now of having finished a game, but because it's left such an impression I literally can't focus on/want to play another game. I don't want to play any more RDR2, yet at the same time I'm not ready to let it go from my brain. Just a few hours with the first game showed how much quicker and accessible that game is and I wish in so many ways that #2 - undoubtedly the better game overall - had at least an option to switch from 'realistic sim' to 'hurry the heck up' mode, I'd be far more inclined to keep exploring (and holy heck have people found some awesome/creepy stuff!).
Despite suggesting you wait, despite the fact I'm only 50% through #3 with the hot wheels DLC still to play, I bought FH4 last night to have something alongside pokemon to play 'brainlessly' until I can move on to a new RPG 'main course' (which I've already decided is XC2).
Shall we all call Mr Sherlock 'Benedict Bandersnatch'? A subtle warning to anyone else tripping the profanity filter and also a sneaky bit of an FF tie-in (and Alice too for any looking glass fans!)?
Good news, it seems some of the "sell me fortnite" reviews became "I love my new Xbox" reviews. Happy endings do exist.
Except for the one dude who wanted the FIFA bundle and missed the sale.
Haha, anyway, I've gotta say it's impressive how they actually sold all and every single one of the Xbox One S bundles. That was fun to watch in real time.
As I mentioned the first part of Gypceros is a derogative offensive word in the UK (afaik). They just made it so the filter ignores Gypceros, because it became a common false alert in the MH threads.
Is that seriously in your profanity filter? Did someone at NLife put that in or are you using some kind of generic list of taboo words someone else made?
(Word) or (word)ped is a pretty rare term meaning steal or swindle or generally underhanded behaviour. It's derived from (word)sies, who are a sort of ethnic tribe that exists in the UK and Ireland (ethnic just meaning they live separately, but they're not racially distinct from the rest of british natives)
The negative attitudes come from the fact that (word)sies have a kind of protected legal status in the UK which means the government treat them by different standards. For most things this isn't a problem however whenever they commit certain kinds of crimes (like illegally drawing from power lines or illegally settling on other people's land), the government is incredibly slow to do anything about it. Most people who live in the countryside in the UK will have had some experience of this. There are 2 different "traveler" camp sites within 5 minutes drive of my house. Both of them illegally set up on other people's land.
@Dezzy FYI: they don't just exist in Ireland and the UK, they're spread out all over the world. We have some communities over here as well, and they've even spread out as far as Asia.
I already figured the word must be rare, though, since I've literally never heard of it.
But having said that, no offense, but we've kinda moved on and decided to stick to more on-topic matters...
After all: this is the only decent Xbox-related community that we've got left, after the demise of NLife's Xbox-related friend/sister-site Pure Xbox. The one that they've currently listed at the bottom of the page, doesn't even remotely come close to it.
@Dezzy I know the meaning of the word you don't need to trigger the censor four times. And actually it does have racial origins, since it comes from "Egyptian". Anyway yes, please, let's move on.
@ThanosReXXX I sometimes find their videos on YouTube, they're not that bad
I find it interesting that the most exciting thing for me about getting an Xbox One X is being able to legitimately play Lost Odyssey, a fairly early 360 title. BC definitely holds huge value for me
@BrainOfGrimlock OG One had a different controller model. I've heard of controller issues though. Then again every platform has issues. Only thing I dislike about the current stock X1 controllers is the creaky plastic cover on the top around the USB port above the bumper bridge. That makes it feel cheap. And the bad USB port on one of them (It lets it work as a wired controller but won't recharge a P&C battery.) I've heard of stick drift issues being an issue and bumpers being an issue, but not guide buttons and triggers. Odd.
I just made sure not to use my "Scorpio" one
I know what you mean about the lasting impression of a game. Some games do that to me. Nier probably will. XC2 & Torna were the last two for me. Also, oddly. Mirror's Edge.
@ThanosRexx you're not kidding, I clicked on OutsideXBox for the first time and I see a bunch of bloggy videos with some couple(?) and a picture of Ratchet & Clank.
@BlueOcean
PS: Honestly I'm not thrilled with any of the companies' customer service. I did have a good live chat with MS over a PayPal issue, while Sony had like an hour wait queue to deal with and then dropped. Nintendo gives me form letters days later. But anything on the phone, MS gives you the horrid Bangalore call center. It's kind of a wash on that. But I'm with you on the controller and DRM. Sony is barely a notch above Nintendo where DRM and the whole digital ecosystem is concerned. MS definitely wins digital by a landslide.
I think the natural progression is
Nintendo=gaming
Nintendo is for kids/look at the wide world of games on PC/XBox/Playstation
Nintendo=gaming
Why not both?
"New MS" still buys advertising rights, just not much "timed exclusive" garbage. Shadow of the Tomb Raider they had advertising rights for for example. They don't do it as often as Sony though (yikes, that whole RDR2 advertising mess. Who wants the rights for Fallout 76? Anyone? Anyone?) But yeah, pushing on BC was really, in hindsight, a huge move for them. At launch the OG X1 really was kind of a joke. It was the weaker system with no big exclusives on the horizon (pun not intended) for the same money. It had nothing to differentiate itself and the whole generation reset. It's kind of an inverse platform, it got better as the years went on. I do think the X, BC, and new studios caught Sony off guard. They released nearly all their PS4 exclusives all jumbled at once this past year and a half as though preparing to unload PS4 right when MS announced only to find MS holding back with X.
WiiU: In fairness to Nintendo, the name makes a lot more sense in Japanese thinking....adding a letter to the end of something, or specifically a kanji tends to signify a special iteration. It's not so odd there to bolt on a letter/word for a sequel versus here where we expect a number. And that kind of metaphoric "the name implies both a successor to the Wii, and literally it is "We + You"....word play with alternate readings of different kanji that have the same pronunciation is a big thing they do with the language there. Kind of like how the name for Smash Ultimate's "World of Light" (Tomoshibi no Hoshi (灯火の星) ), if you flip it around, change the reading form, and replace the kanji with the katakana, you end up with 星のカービィ a.k.a. Hoshi no Kābī - Kirby of the Stars: The name of the Kirby series there. Yes, the very name "World of Light" is figuratively "Kirby's Dreamland" in reverse (In English we'd do Dnalmaered Sybrik)..... You can do some really fun transformations of things in Japanese. Which is what they were trying to do cleverly with WiiU....but it fell absurdly flat outside Japan and that should have been obvious to them.
Still, XBox would do better to name the discless version the XBox One Economy model, or XBox One E. It's less confusing, doesn't sound the same or like a hybrid of both machines, and then they can advertise that the XBox One family offers unprecedented fun no matter whether you choose from:
XBox One S
XBox One E
XBox One X
They really summarized it well, though they were too generous. Granted, they did say it's not fun at all, but they did say exploration was the one fun part. Unfortunately the bad survival mechanic they mentioned means you can't freely explore because you're always racing to running water, leaky faucets, and fires to boil it.
Glad it's not just me. Honestly, this may just break Bethesda. Their reputation for this kind of thing now caught up to them in a game that's also not fun despite it's failings. They aren't going to be able to recover from this easily. And TES6 is many years away. Let's hope TES:O can at least keep them solvent for a while? I smell another inevitable expak.
@Yosheel Outside Xbox, you mean? To be clear: I'm not saying they're bad, but they're not nearly as good as Pure Xbox was. And they could most certainly do with a new web designer, because their current website looks decidedly bland...
P.S.
One last factoid to get the complete story: in relation to British censorship/NLife profanity alerts, you might find it interesting that it's actually quite ironic that the meaning/origins of the word that we shall not utter anymore, was based on a 16th century British mistake, so they've kind of set themselves up for this by making up and introducing a word into their own language that's completely wrong, in several ways...
The official name for these people is Romani/Roma and they actually came from Asia, (several regions in India, to be precise) and their origin is Indo-Aryan, so it has nothing to do with Egypt. There's all kinds of sub groups as well, such as the Sinti and Gitanos.
Anyway, that's all from me, so feel free to ignore all this if you already knew that.
A question about the required space for my upcoming console...
How much free space does the S need around it? I plan to have the WiiU back in the background behind it, and the switch dock to its right. Is that ok, or could that damage any of them?
@DarthNocturnal Well, NL isn't going to review Fallout 76' anymore now that Dom's not the editor, so.........
And at least PushSquare has more XBox games than that odd OutsideXBox featuring Ratchet & Clank thingie... At least it isn't IGN!
2 months after launch discount? The way this thing is going it will be GwG for January I've never seen a major AAA game with a sub-50 Metacritic. PS4 is sub-50, PC and X1 are sub-60. X1 is bolstered only by the X...I'm not sure if the big patch fixes it for PS4/OG X or not, they just pushed a 50-some gig patch yesterday raising the install size over 100GB. They claim it fixes performance but....Bethesda.... It's getting review bombed but the 2.8 User score is particularly fun.
I'd say "I'll play with you"...but no....I'm not sure I can be dragged back into that abyss Not unless they massively overhaul it
I mean, it's a major AAA game that one of Ant's websites rated a 3. They rate everything '9', remember? To be fair, there are people (mostly on PC) that say it's kind of fun....mostly for the ability to play in groups though. You like SoT, so you might like it more than the average gamer. It's worth it for you to consider probably since it does have some similarity. Except SoT is a fun world to be in. This is apocalyptic WV with nothing but corpses.
@ThanosReXXX Which also brings to mind the fun of the Nazi obsession with perfect German Aryanism....when Austrio-Germans aren't Aryan. At all. it's amazing how people will believe anything that comes out of the mouth of someone with authority.
@redd214 I honestly don't understand the huge popularity of Bethesda's Fallout. They have nothing to do with the fun, tongue in cheek original Black Isle/Interplay Fallout series. They reinvented it as a dead serious post-apocalyptic survival game. I was trying out Mad Max yesterday. I got it free on PS but for $5 decided on the Black Friday sales I'd rather have it on XBox. I couldn't help but think as I played it that everything about that game feels 100% more Fallout than anything Bethesda has ever made with the name Fallout on it.
Original Fallout was very comic book. Right down to bizarre cults, sci-fi experiments and themes, ray guns, casinos, conspiracies, and life on the frontier. Like cowboys in an post-apocalypse. That was the heart of it. It was the wild west made anew due to apocalypse. Bethesda retooled it to be as authentically as possible a post-apocalyptic 1950's America complete with misery, despair, and survival....no cowboys and bravado that made the first two fun. It wasn't a new wild west, it was an old ruin. That's the complete opposite of the whole point of the original franchise. I have no idea why it made out to be so popular. The original was great. I want more of that. But for now I can't see ever buying another Fallout while Bethesda is making it. And that's from a long time Elder Scrolls die-hard.
@Yosheel Wouldn't be an issue if you place the Wii U behind it. If the Xbox One S is placed horizontally, the air flow/ventilation is on the left side of the disc drive, so keep some space there so it has enough space to circulate and vent air, and you're good.
EDIT:
And perhaps needless to say, but also don't place anything on top of the console, seeing as there's also an air inlet/outlet in the right half of the top casing, but you'll see once you have the console in your home.
@NEStalgia True, but enough of that highly sensitive off-topic stuff. Yeah, that Outside Xbox site is pretty sparse, isn't it?
Too bad, really, because the writing ain't half bad, and like @Yosheel has already said, they make some pretty decent videos as well. They just don't know how to dress up a website. They should have taken some pointers from Pure Xbox...
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
A question about the required space for my upcoming console...

The fan on the Xbox One S is on the right-hand side of the top of the console. So that's the only thing you need to keep uncovered really.
