@BLP_Software The guy said ''I don't know if it turned a profit. But it underperformed, and meeting expectations are as important'', that's a big difference. A profit simply isn't enough for a company like EA when their expectations are even higher. It's just silly. And 4 million for a horror game is good, why did they even have higher expectations than that? It was never going to be the next FIFA or Battlefield. Then they continued to include micro-transactions and various other unnecessary things in Dead Space 3 and be surprised it sold even worse...
Solution? Flip the company, put their IPs on hold, buy out a new company, rinse and repeat.
That's not to say these companies don't have an issue with bad management, they do, but sometimes their expectations are way too unrealistic. So despite making a profit, it simply isn't ''good enough'' for them.
The simplest explanation for the 8th gen open world bubble is that Skyrim took three and a half years and $85 million dollars to make and market and grossed 1.4 BILLION dollars.
Whatever they do at Bethesda works for the explorative kind of game they make, but when publishers tell their teams "make it open world," the genre or series simply might not be suited for that kind of expanded travel and play time. Not to mention that some studios are not equipped or trained to make large AAA open world games in four years' time and end up having to cut corners. Andromeda could be seen as an example of that.
So while we're on the topic... Activision just got a patent granted. Have a read below...
A system and method is provided that drives microtransactions in multiplayer video games. The system may include a microtransaction arrange matches to influence game-related purchases. For instance, the system may match a more expert/marquee player with a junior player to encourage the junior player to make game-related purchases of items possessed/used by the marquee player. A junior player may wish to emulate the marquee player by obtaining weapons or other items used by the marquee player.
I mean, nice to see the evil in plain writing for a change. Can't wait to hear the Jimquisition on that one.
I really do sometimes feel ashamed I play something like Destiny. I don't buy the loot boxes, but I certainly encourage them just by playing and making the game more successful. I love the game, but not what it encourages from the playerbase.
Yeah outside of Sony and Nintendo's 1st party studios, the AAA singleplayer game is largely becoming a thing of the past. Games like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Dishonored 2, and Prey have all bombed. I get the feeling The Evil Within 2 isn't doing well either. We'll see how well South Park and Wolfenstein do.
I don't like this direction at all. The only GaaS game I play is Splatoon 2. Looks like I'll be sticking to Sony/Nintendo 1st party games and indies in the future for the most part.
To be fair, Deus Ex had a ton of crap associated with it outside of its quality as a game (crappy marketing, confused publisher, etc.), Dishonored 2 failed to establish itself as different from its predecessor (see Bioshock 1 -> Bioshock 2 in regards to how people generally react to "more of the same but not as good"), and Prey was just creepy. That's just me, personally, but I would never touch a game where a frequent mechanic involves sticking needles into your eye sockets. I didn't see a single promo that didn't come off as disturbing on multiple levels, yet I don't think it was supposed to be a horror game, either.
@Operative2-0 Dead Space was one of the best games of last generation. I believe Mirror’s Edge also came out in the same month as well. A shame that EA of today are not overly concerned about new and unique IPs.
I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel too however, it became too much of a shooting gallery during the last few chapters, and who can forget that awful regenerating black-goo-thingummy at the very end? Terrible way to conclude an otherwise great game. The less said about the third outing, the better...
It seems to me that Bethesda, Sony and Nintendo are the remaining developers/publishers who are still happy to pursue games with a strong focus on single (and multi) player games without feeling the need to go the way of implementing a GaaS model. A shame that Dishonoured 2, Prey and The Evil Within II hasn’t set the world alight (in terms of sales), even though they are all very, very good single player games.
Microsoft have been pursuing the GaaS model for a while now; Halo Wars 2, Forza Motorsport 7 and Sea of Thieves shows the direction they are heading, as well as choosing to charge a premium for digital games that comes out three or four days early, just like EA does. I think the latter method is disgusting really.
@NaviAndMii If it’s any consolation, the game is really, really good!
@Peek-a-boo Yeah, can't wait! I received a very apologetic email this morning explaining that my bundle should be with me by Friday - so fingers crossed on that one!
I didn't realise when I originally placed the order, but I'm actually getting a 'Limited Edition' copy of the game with some neat little extra's and a nice little pre-order bonus (Dynamic Theme, 3 cars & 500,000cr) on top - which came as a pleasant surprise...just playing the waiting game now! (..I've got plenty of grinding to do on Splatoon 2 anyway, so all is not lost! )
Glad you're enjoying the game though my friend! I'll hopefully be joining you on track before the end of the week!
Both the boyfriend and I both got raises on the same day, by some weird miracle. So, it looks like I'll be getting the PSVR for my birthday present this year. Aside from Resident Evil 7, which, honestly, is the main reason I want the thing, are there any VR recommendations?
@Tsurii From what I understand they are revamping the Star Wars game (stripping out the single player elements and making it more multiplayer focused).

I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
Multiplayer is people's speculation, 'wider' and 'lasting appeal' were the vague things discussed with 'linear story-driven' being what they cited as not being fab enough or whatever the hell they wanted. This game was half-announced too early.
That's not to say these companies don't have an issue with bad management, they do, but sometimes their expectations are way too unrealistic. So despite making a profit, it simply isn't ''good enough'' for them.
I'm reminded of Tomb Raider 2013. Ended up below Squenix's expectations. Also happens to be the best selling Tomb Raider game in the entire series. Lol. Business idiots.
@Operative2-0 Here’s a really good - and useful - list of (sixteen) virtual reality games for those who have picked up a PS VR recently. The article is posted as of the 5th of October so, it is very much up to date too!
I have played the first hour of Resident Evil VII on the PS VR, and whilst the opening twenty minutes is a little bit underwhelming in terms of visuals (when you are outside in the woods), seeing as you are making a short trek to the Baker house, the moment you step foot indoors, however, it really is an astonishingly tense game.
Area X in Rez Infinite is frequently hailed as the best audiovisual experience you can have in virtual reality, and games like Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and RIGS shows that ‘proper’ games can work on the PS VR.
Oh, and congratulations on both you and your partners pay rise too!
Well, DOOM VFR is coming to PSVR. The main game was apparently too quick for peoples' stomachs.
And Megaton Rain looks like an interesting PSVR game. Still an ocean away from something that is worth $500+ though, and we don't know if all the old PSVR games will be compatible when PSVR 2 comes out with new motion controllers.
Oh man, imagine if they announce Bloodborne 2 and show us Last Of Us 2 and FF7 remake footage. I would explode. That would easily make it better than this year's E3. Also Tabata said he'd be giving the "roadmap" for the further FF15 stuff in November. So they might announce that. I'd buy the entire game again if they announce the 2018 DLC is them making the second continent in FF15 open world.
@Dezzy Keep in mind that PSX is early December. They're going to save anything big for that event; like TLOU2 or Death Stranding (possibly). I don't expect anything big out of PGW. Maybe one new game and a few smaller (indie) titles, release dates and more trailers.
