Peek-a-boo

On the subject of Resident Evil, is anybody here going to buy VII in a few weeks time, on the 24th?

The surprisingly generous demo has conflicted me. On one hand, it feels like playing the original three Resident Evil games from a first-person perspective and most of the time, it is genuinely tense with the photorealistic-ish technology that Capcom are using as well as the superb audio design.

On the other hand, when things 'don't happen' or when you are in a rare combat situation, it kind of falls apart and takes you out of the experience. The monster you encounter in the basement (in the demo) is gruesome in its appearance, but joyless to escape/fight.

I enjoyed the action direction Resident Evil 4 took, mostly because it was a breath of fresh air at the time, but I also would like to see something like Code: Veronica again, which married a perfect blend of the classic Resident Evil formula in a 3D space with hints of action, however sparse those moments were.

I'm curious to say the least!

Still haven't played the demo. Might wait til I have VR to try it.

I don't get why Capcom have failed to badly to replicate RE4. That was clearly the best they've done. They just can't seem to do it again.

I can't wait for Resident Evil VII. I played the Kitchen demo in VR, albeit I won't be playing the full game that way, and what with the positive previews and trailers I'm very satisfied that they know what they're doing with going in this direction. More power to you if you're going all in and playing in VR, not sure I could manage it from a physical perspective but the demo I played was reassuring enough were I to do so.

At the very worst even if the sceptics end up being right and this is RE: Outlast Edition I wouldn't be too miffed at that either, Outlast was a very good game after all. Albeit we know that isn't the case as combat will be very important in this game and that's cool as long as it's fun.

But yes I am definitely in agreement that 4 is the best in the series, though my opinion doesn't really count for much as I haven't played 2,3,5 or 6. Doesn't count for much at all. But I am emphatic in my praise for 4, as I consider it to be objectively and mechanically the best game I've ever played. Therefore I don't have my expectations set anywhere near as high for 7, but I am still expecting it to be great.

Hopefully reviews come out a while before launch especially for the VR side of things, as the first mega game to use VR it wouldn't look good at all if performance over the whole game with it is shoddy and they delayed sending out review copies for that.

Lol Apriori Knowledge.

Well you should play some of those. 2 and 3 are great. Although maybe wait for the remake of 2.
5 is good too. Although kinda abandoned the horror aspect. It's just like Gears of War or something.

@Peek-a-boo I was looking forward to it until I remembered why I liked the Resident Evil Franchise in the first place: It isn't really all that scary. I don't really like morbid imagery, and I REALLY don't like being put in a scary situation. But Resident Evil is usaully too hokey for me to find scary, and almost always fun, especially 4 & 5. Honestly, the main reason I don't care Resi 6 was because it wasn't fun for me - It was all over the place, and had way too many QTE's, even by Resident Evil standards.

The last Resi game I felt was scary was Resident Evil 3, and I genuinely hated that game...

@CanisWolfred What about REmake? I found that game to be INCREDIBLY creepy at times. Mostly because of the fantastic atmosphere.

I never did get around to that. Granted, I'm also including Revelations and Code Veronica...but none of the remakes (excluding the Wii U version of revelations), nor have I ever played Resi0. In fact, I keep forgetting that exists...

So I've been keeping a list of indie games to keep eye out for, especially since it's quite possible to miss the release date when the game is pretty unknown. To my surprise, I have a list of 12 13 14 games I'm looking forward to this year! Twelve! That's way more than last year when I played The Witness, Firewatch and Hyper Light Drifter among others.

First off is GNOG, the weirdest one on the list, a weird little puzzle game, I don't even know what it is to be honest, but I want it. Then there's Wattam too, more weirdness, but it's made by the creator of Katamari Damacy so I want to check it out because of that. Manifold Garden is shaping up to be a neat puzzle game that takes place in some weird simplistic angular world. Snake Pass looks to be a puzzle/platformer, absolutely check this one out if you were a fan of the 3D platformers from the N64 and PS1, the game looks similar, but with a unique twist. Visually it's similar to Yooka-Laylee, but the environments are more dense and look better IMHO. Nevertheless, Yooka-Laylee looks good as well. Then there's Vane an artsy game that's comparable to Journey, I'm a sucker for those 3-hour experiences, and Vane looks pretty intriguing. Aer is similar in that it's an artsy game too, but more of an adventure type of game, but you can also change into a bird in this game. Hob looks like a Wiiware indie platformer, still looks good in a way, another platformer/adventure type of game. Then there's What Remains of Edith Finch, a story based game I think, haven't really followed this one, but the PSX trailer caught my attention, same is true for Night in the Woods (and they're both releasing soon). Knights and Bikes looks like an Earthbound inspired RPG, awesome! Prey for the Gods, okay, if you liked Shadow of the Colossus, check this one out, it's basically a spiritual successor to that game, set to release somewhere in 2017, so I can't wait. And lastly, and I know this one won't release until 2018, but it's Little Devil Inside, arguably the ''biggest'' game of the list. IIRC the release date was set somewhere in early 2018, but the devs have promised gameplay footage and trailers for big events like GDC and E3, so there's that to look forward to.

edit: And I still completely forgot about RIME!

Pretty disappointed by the Gravity Rush 2 reviews to be honest. I'm still definitely going to get the game because I love the first but I was hoping that the second would be a big improvement.

@Octane Yooka-Laylee and The Night in the Woods are two that I'm looking forward to the most, at least as far as what I know will hit this year. I'm also looking forward to Indivisible, which I already backed, but I'm not sure if it'll release this year or not.

@Gamer83 The original is one of my favorite first party Sony games, so this sounds perfect to me. I don't want the basic structure of the series to be upended. It sounds like there are still stealth segments in the game, though, which I'm a bit miffed by. Gravity Rush and stealth just don't mix well.

I'm disappointed that it didn't seem to resonate with Western reviewers, but I've come to peace with the fact that I won't see eye-to-eye with them on... well, almost anything. I just hope this doesn't dissuade people from getting the game.

@Ralizah
I didn't want the basic formula upended either. Why ruin a good thing? The Super Mario games are all different but have a basic structure that has worked well for over 3 decades. Not putting Gravity Rush in that class but what it has works for now. The first is one of my favorite games, so I'm still looking forward to playing this. Was just hoping for a bit of a bigger leap I guess. From what I've read, it seems like general consensus is some of the missions, especially early on, are set up poorly but once the game gets going it gets much better so I'm confident it'll be worth the purchase. Sounds like it takes a decent amount of time to finish as well, which is always nice.

That, and the general learning curve are the biggest complaints I've seen - The latter of which isn't a big deal for me. I remember the first game not having much variety in its side missions, though, and I haven't read enough to find out if that was recified. Otherwise, it sounds like I'll be in for another fun time.

@CanisWolfred I should be excited about Yooka Laylee, but I'm not really feeling it to be honest. I'll definitely check it out, but I dunno, it lacks character I think? Weird thing to say about a game that's full of googly eyes, but I don't know how else to describe it. Hopefully I'm proven wrong and it's a great game after all. Personally I'm more looking forward to Snake Pass, a visually similar game, but it looks a lot more unique, and from what I've heard, the controls are actually pretty intuitive.

@Ralizah Reviews seems to be largely positive though, and the review scores are similar to the first game, so I won't complain! Loved the first game, so if this is on a similar level, then it's all good.

Don't recall any stealth missions though..

I've been having some fun with the Yooka-Laylee toybox demo. It's pretty smooth, although I'm not a fan of the weird visual hitch when I move the camera around my character. Hopefully that's reduced or eliminated in the full release.

@Octane The first game had a mission where you had to sneak around some police/guards/whatever. It was, far and away, my least favorite part of the original game, as the mechanics just aren't well-designed for stealth, imo. Hardly surprising for a game where your character's primary method of locomotion is a form of flying.

The Yooka Laylee demo was ok but it wasn't quite up to the 3D Mario level of creativity in its design.

@Ralizah I remember, that chapter with the thief on that small floating island with the mansion on it. I just jumped off and went underneath the island to get to the other side.

@Dezzy In fairness, it wasn't supposed to be. It was just a hastily designed environment meant to show off the platforming controls and whatnot.

Yeah, there's a reason they called it the toybox. I liked the overall feel, at least, which is just as important as the level design in a platformer. I mean, I still hope the levels are good, too, I'm just saying, they're already halfway there as far as gameplay is concerned.

I don't feel like I could compare the two, because Snake Pass (why not "Snake's Pass"?) is supposed to be a physics-based action-puzzle platformer, and I hate those by default.
