@DefHalan Because Japanese companies are actually smart, and aren't just waste their time and resources just so they can try to accomodate a bunch of impatient neanderthals who can't appreciate a proper build-up.

@CanisWolfred Are you suggesting that Sony's going to drop some big announcements in the coming days? I don't think that'll happen to be honest.

No. TGS is not specifically a Sony conference. There's gonna be livestreams for days. S-E has their own press conference on the 17th. It's clear that everyone only let Sony show the projects they didn't want overlooked, excluding first-party games and Resident Evil 7, I mean, it sounds like Capcom doesn't have any surprises waiting in the wings when I looked at their schedule earlier, so I guess they just wanted to do us all a favor there.

@CanisWolfred Oh, yeah I agree. We'll definitely see more of the other developers in the coming days, I don't expect anything major, but we'll get a few trailers here and there.

@Octane Indeed. In fact, I may have spoken a little too soon with my earlier posts, if anybody wants a fairly concrete list of they'll be shoing in the coming days, Gematsu's got a whole list. Every company apparently announced they're entire schedule weeks in advance. There might still be surprises (I don't see that Musou Crossover game on it, for instance, and I know that was a new reveal), but I guess they decided to drop all pretentions this year...or maybe I never noticed the schedules until this year, who knows...

So, new footage of New Danganronpa V3 was revealed, and it's apparently being released in Japan this coming January, which hopefully means it'll come West sooner than later:

@Haru17 Good to hear, but it's probably still a thing anyway..

The game is probably real, but a leak talking about open, explorable environments is so faaaaake.

Good point. That doesn't sound like something you'd find in a modern ND game.

It's a pretty good fake leak, though. It certainly looks real.

That leak looks boring, which is in large part why I don't believe it. The most boring structure in The Last of Us was the hospital which was, well—yeah. Naughty Dog hasn't shaken that set piece spirit yet!

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Nah. That wintery city looks lovely. And explorable environments sound interesting. Of course, the game would still be boring if it's primarily composed of hovels filled with bullet sponge zombies, cartoonishly-evil mooks, and any more of those horrific plank-moving sections.

The best part of TLoU besides the very beginning, after all, is that brief bit where you control Ellie and you're trying to save Joel's life. There was actual environmental and gameplay variety during that bit. It was fantastic.

Make the main character Ellie, or someone else who isn't an angry white dude. Get away from the setpiece-driven gameplay and actually let players explore the world you so meticulously create. Fill the game with visual variety and get away from the drear of fungus-choked ruins (or at least, give us fungus-choked ruins during Winter, or something). Give players a way to interact with the environment in a meaningful way.

Do that, and I'll actually look forward to playing TLOU 2.

@Ralizah, man, the point was that he was a gruff white American who didn't know how to deal with his feelings, thus the impetus to the plot. They even made him a Texan for chrissakes! You were supposed to not always like him because he was kind of a jerk, Ellie was the intended target of your sympathies. They're actually a very good example of a dual protagonist.

Anyway, I don't want Naughty Dog to make another generic open world game just because some can't handle different games being different. Uncharted 4 was a good example of how to build upon Naughty Dog's kinda game.

@Haru17 I don't really consider him to be a jerk. Kill my daughter and put me in some crapsack world filled with zombies and seemingly perpetual warfare and I probably won't be a bundle of roses either. I just find him boring.

Environmental exploration ≠ Open world game. They don't have to choose between making their games roller-coaster narratives with very little in the way of meaningful interactivity or open-world sandboxes. It's not one or the other. That's an obviously false dichotomy. As you even mentioned, Uncharted 4 apparently plays around with opening that game up a bit while not destroying the ND formula.

And I'm a little more lenient with Uncharted games anyway. They're basically interactive action movies, so that sort of game design makes sense for what they're going for there. I even enjoyed Uncharted 2 (until it yet again started throwing stupid monsters at me near the end). I just don't think the same type of game design philosophy makes sense with a slower, more serious game like The Last of Us. It's hard to take Joel's emotional journey seriously when he's spending half the game slicing people's necks, caving in their skulls with crowbars, or gunning them down.

I never tried the DLC story that comes with the PS4 version of TLoU. Is it worth playing if I'm not super-hot on the main game?

I don't think "meaningful interactivity" means much of anything.

I play a first person shooter / walking simulator where my only buttons are shoot, walk, and reload, maybe then we can start talking about "meaningful interactivity."

And I think whether you should buy TLoU Left Behind comes down to your taste in walking simulator's. It's got a playful interpretation on the game's mechanics as well as some standard shoot-and-loot with infected, but it's mostly a 2-hour walk-and-talk with some more excellent cutscenes.

@Ralizah @Haru17 Believe it or not, chaps, that d-word is sending the profanity filter into overdrive this morning.

A pity. I've changed the offending word in my post to be more profanity filter friendly.

@Haru17 It is, but I think it was designed to take both UK and US sensibilities into account. FWIW I have recently suggested a slight loosening of the filter, but it's not my decision.

Well, Deus Ex certainly ended with a bang. Definitely didn't see the twist coming and you can deeeeefinitely screw up the ending REAL bad.

I hope we get another game by 2018 at least, if they're trying to go the Mass Effect "chapter in a larger story" route.
