@Octane Except they never said they'd patch first party games and started only with "to get 60FPS on 2 year old spiderman you have to buy a remaster." The obvious take-away there was if Spiderman at 2yo was too "old" to get an update, certainly they'll ply the same trick with most other games? Especially since they're giving them out with plus.
@Dezzy My thinking is they were weighing the "remaster everything and sell it again as new!" idea until Spiderman didn't go down so well and then revised to "lets release 60fps patches like every freaking body else".
@NEStalgia Again, I get it, Spider-Man is the exception.
Thing is, the ''remaster'' changes more than the average next gen patch. Including new facial animations. I'm not saying I agree with this approach, but I can also see that the work put into it is way more than the average next gen patch. They decided to go the extra mile and put a lot more work into it. But they're not locking you from playing Spider-Man on the PS5 if you already own the PS4 copy. Don't buy it if you don't think it's worth your money. I won't. It's really not something I'd lose sleep over.
And I don't think the response to Spider-Man is what changed their mind, because they were already offering free patches for games like Sackboy, Kena and Horizon 2. Spider-Man is just the exception, because it's the only one that offers a lot more than a resolution and/or frame rate boost.
@Octane The point isn't that "Spiderman is the exception". The point is that based on their message to that point, and frankly up until this week and in reality even beyond this week for many games, we do not actually know if Spiderman is the exception or the rule. Suddenly this week, it's become clearer they're going to actually properly patch other important games. But until they state so it's a wild card if that's true or not.
Yes, the remaster changes more - but a practical solution, if the remaster is really warranted beyond work already done for Miles, the right choice was release the boost patch AND sell a remaster. Not withhold 60fps mode only for the remaster. If the remaster had enough merits to sell on, sell it on that rather than keeping back expected functionality. Ironically the remaster actually looks worse in some aspects on the 60fps mode, such that it might have actually been a better looking game with a boost patch than the remaster, if using the 60fps mode (30fps mode with reflections is a whole other story, but weirdly we haven't seen much of it...)
But the point is, if Spiderman was the one and only exception, that needed to be said, or rather "BTW, we're updating GoT, LoU-R, GoW for PS5" like, 3 months ago. The image they created is that might be how they release all the games. I'm still wondering how HzD will be done. No patch mentioned....remasters coming?
They dropped the ball on communication, and the only two causes are: They actually are competitive and forgot to tell anyone, making themselves look bad and their competitor look good. Or they were on the fence wiating to see how anti-competitive they could get away with being and only decided on updates after they calculated risk. Frankly I believe the latter. That's how "play the numbers Ryan" runs things.
No they were offering patches on the new UPCOMING games as a cross-gen release approach. They said nothing about patching existing games, and the only example they had until Sucker Punch announced GoT was Spiderman - zero improvement on new hardware, buy the remaster. Up until last week the only information we had of how they're handling existing games already released was one example: No update, paid remaster only. Then Sucker Punch did GoT, and now we're finding out about other games.
Did they have a competitive position on update patches all along and their communications team simply "forgot" to tell anyone while their competitor was screaming for months on end from the hill tops all their enhancements, and the press was actively benchmarking them and posting videos? Or were they still deciding if they'd actually do that or sell everyone a remaster for the whole back catalogue of important games?
They either have the worlds worst communications team of all time, or they were deciding how deep to screw their customers until 3 weeks before go time.
Actually reading the actual article and post, it's not looking like they're patching GoW at all, they're just restating what it already has on Pro...."Performance" mode gets "up to" 60fps. So basically they're saying "It's still backward compatible and you still get to choose 4k30 or 1080p/up-to-60-with-less-drops" .
Ugh, I take back the compliments on them finally getting it.
@redd214 Hah! I just can't stand companies jerking around customers. And there was so much potential here and they're either squandering it in practice or in communications (or both.) Just do it right and celebrate it, or do it wrong and flip everyone off publicly. But dancing half hardheartedly around the issue and waiting for the audience to craft the narrative for them is just shady infuriating.
@NEStalgia Ok man, hope you find some time to enjoy some games between your infuriation!
On another note, just got shipping confirmation for my headset!! Seems it'll be here Thursday and not Friday like everything else. Going to be weird to have all these accessories and no console for 2 weeks!
@redd214 lol, acnh for the Halloween swag, spatfest for Halloween and finally dug Luigi's Mansion 3 out of the backlog! All Nintendo until the Great White Router and fridge show up!
Wake me up when BB is 60fps, then I’ll be interested. I couldn’t be bothered with GoW.
I couldn't be bothered with God of War either. I waited like a year and a half before playing it. I'm very glad I finally played it though, it's definitely one of the games of the generation. You should just force yourself to try it.
@Dezzy My thinking is they were weighing the "remaster everything and sell it again as new!" idea until Spiderman didn't go down so well and then revised to "lets release 60fps patches like every freaking body else".
I dunno how much people would be willing to pay for some of those games just in 60fps and slightly higher resolution. There's such a tiny number of games that would really be worthy that upgrade for me. Bloodborne and maybe FF7 Remake would be the only ones (but FF7 Remake would have to fix all the texturing issues)
