I dunno, @VoidofLight .... But then I'm not sure what qualifies as 'normal' in the world this game describes! Anyone a fan of dragons? There's a few of those in the game
Strangely enough, I think they all count as bosses of some variety! Anyone managed to kill any of them yet?

@BruceCM Those things are pretty much why I'm staying away from Caelid right now. They're all over the place in that region, often in mobs. Only a From Software game would make baby Tigrex dog things a common enemy.

Had a pretty productive session today. Didnt have much time but I got through the next area (North of Limgrave) and beat its Lord. Wasnt too difficult surprisingly, although the difficulty spikes wildly if you step into the wrong neighborhood. I loved the enemy designs, there were weird automotons powered by sorcery. After taking hits they would occasionally lose control and fall down, flailing their weapons around and becoming even more dangerous .

@BruceCM i've seen 3 dragons, and I managed to beat 2 of them. The one I didnt get killed me with fire before I could even get close!

@Ralizah Good that you're staying out of there, I checked one of the mini bosses in that area when I was around level 20 and it stole something like 20k runes from me because i didnt expect it to be impossible.

Speaking of impossible, I've run into some bosses which seem to require some sort of elemental damage on your weapon just to be able to fight them and I'm not sure I'm a fan of that. In other Souls games if you can hit it, it will do damage. Yes you will be able to do more damage with a certain element the boss is weak to but overall it would still be manageable. Here I did something like 9hp per hit with a strength build weapon and that's kind of ridiculous.

Also, does anybody here feel like the puzzles in this game are straight up inspired by Korok seeds?

They can be very obscure at explaining what is required and some puzzles are just "hit the thing that runs around" like the rabbits from BotW and "find three of these things to open a gate".

The more I play this game the more I feel the direct inspiration. I have heard people say this is BotW but better but they fail to realise that BotW is from 2017 and it was the first of its kind, also it has focus on other components such as the physics of the world rather than equipment because it's an adventure game and not an RPG.

I know it's popular to downplay BotW everytime anyone gets the chance but man, it gets a little frustrating.

@Varkster I've actually not encountered any puzzles in this game yet, unless you consider falling off cliffs to find hidden items and areas puzzles. The lack of puzzle solving and environmental interactivity definitely puts it under BotW for me, although bosses and enemy variety are definitely better in this.

Nintendo has a very vocal hatedom online, composed primarily of people who seem to spend the bulk of their day going to different gaming communities and trolling Nintendo fans. It is what it is. There's never any value in engaging with them, so I've taken to just putting them on ignore when possible so I don't have to become annoyed by their stupidity.

Honestly, I've encountered nothing other than what I'd expect from a souls game, but that's probably because I've been stuck in the starting area, and I might need to change my class.

@Ralizah You may have already encountered puzzles without actually realising its a puzzle. If you find a force field of some sort I advise to see if you can find something nearby to read.

In the first area without spoiling too much there is something that looks like infinitely cast magic which is also a puzzle.

They aren't as creative as something like the deer puzzle in Zelda but they do exist.

Between Elden Ring, Pokemon Arceus and Scarlet/Violet, Xenoblade 3, (hopefully) Breath of the Wild 2, Dying Light 2, Starfield and probably a lot more I'm forgetting it sure does seem like a very good year for open world games.

I really haven't enjoyed open worlds this much for a while. I mean, they were a cool evolution back in the Morrowind days and it didn't seem to progress much from there but it looks like they're finally picking up the slack on open worlds and not just copying the tired Ubisoft formula which is definitely something I've been enjoying.

Um, that's where I am now, @Ralizah .... It's a great place, honestly! Well, at level 20, @Varkster, that sounds about right but later, it'll be at least possible! Glad it's going well, @Losermagnet, I've managed 4 dragons, mostly by sneaking up on them from behind to start with! Think I'm about 2/3 of the way through the story, with only a couple of areas I haven't been to at all

The Vagabond class is way better. Shields to block, and actual armor/defense stats.

Whatever it takes is absolutely fine, @DomGC .... Oh, that's like the knight or whatever, right, @VoidofLight? Certainly got to be better than the wretch, which was supposed to be the 'worst' class by their own info & description

@DomGC I have full time work and don't have the week off and already am almost 40h in...lol

I just finished the second (or third if you count Weeping Peninsula) area and am exploring every nook and cranny of places I've beaten.

BruceCM

Huh, yeah, it's a lovely area, @DomGC .... Is this a dog or a cat? (Yeah, there's several of these around the game, in case you've beaten or avoided any yet)

@BruceCM thats impressive! You'll have finished the game before too long.

@VoidofLight i found the location in Elden Ring where you can un-aggro NPCs....but it's a considerable distance from the starting location. So changing classes was prolly the right call lol

There's really only been one kind of puzzle that seemed an obvious BotW reference to me: the painters memories . Other than that i'm not getting too much overlap between the two games really, outside of a big ol' map. But im sure im missing things too.

Most sandbox games to me just feel like a slightly different genre of collect-a-thon, and what I admire most about BotW is that it edited that idea down to what feels necessary and focuses more on adventure and discovery. There's a simplicity too it that I think will still be fun in 10 or 20 years. Elden Ring on the other hand...I can't quite place it yet. In some ways it feels like a bit of a regression from Sekiro, and it leans a little too much into Dark Souls for my liking. But if the goal was to make a more accessible Fromsoft game....mission accomplished?

So something's been bothering me about Storveil and the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and of anybody can answer this without getting super spoilery that would be appreciated: i've noticed doors and elevators I cant open, and its driving me a bit mad. In other Souls games it usually meant there would be a shortcut that looped back to that area....but I beat both lords and it never looped around! Any ideas gang? Thanks .

Oh, there's still plenty left to explore in half the areas I've been to, @Losermagnet .... Currently going back around starting to dispose of the enemies/ bosses that were too tough when I was there before or that I just didn't come across! Not sure about your Academy, perhaps it's shortcuts to it from later areas or something?
