I noticed discussion for these games are divided up into different threads, so thought it might be a good idea to centralize them, especially given that we're probably getting a big announcement for Elden Ring in the next week.

So discussion for Demons Souls, Dark Souls 1,2,3, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring goes here.

Which are your favourites in this series and what are you hoping for with Elden Ring?

@linq

Do you not consider Bloodborne or Sekiro to be spiritual successors to Dark Souls then?
Or do you just mean more in that same vein.

The trailer for the gameawards that was just released had a quick shot of Elden Ring, so looks like we're definitely getting a big reveal:

Well Sekiro is technically medieval too, given that it's set in the 1500s. I assume you mean European medieval though, which is what Dark Souls is mostly based on. That's my favourite setting/style as well.

I wouldn't say Sekiro is as different as you might think. Playing it felt exactly like playing a Dark Souls game. While there a lot of differences, I don't think they fundamentally change much about the core game structure. If you like both Dark Souls and Bloodborne, I think there's like a 95% chance you'll love Sekiro. I can't imagine anyone loving one but not the other.

A lot of people complained that Sekiro was less forgiving with it’s often “parry or die” combat. Something I hate the most about the enemies in Soulsborne games is their ridiculous hittracking and that’s everywhere in Seiko. You’ll move out the way at the last millisecond and instead of the game rewarding you with a dodge, the enemy seems stuck to you like glue and you get hit. I understand why they chose this since they wanted to force players to do the parry, but Sekiro does have less variation on how you are to efficiently take down enemies.

Still a fantastic game though.

I heard that new Star Wars game has a lot of similarities to Sekiro.

Ashen just released on Switch.

My brother is raving about it and telling me to buy (which I did). He is honestly the biggest Souls fan I’ve ever met in my life- he’s beaten Dark Souls 1, 2, 3, Demon Souls, Bloodborne, Nioh, Sekiro, The Surge 2, Ashen, Lords of the Fallen, etc etc and just repurchased Ashen on Switch, despite not being a big Switch gamer.

I’m wondering if anyone else has played the game and has any thoughts to share...

I actually haven't played any of the games derived form this series at all.

With the sole exception of Salt and Sanctuary.

I just restarted playing Sekiro a few days ago (I never got past the guy with a bow on the roof) and the combat is so intense I love it. It might be my favorite combat system of the series. My history with the series is DS 3 - Bloodborne(no dlc) - Sekiro(unfinished) DS(not finished). I played some Nioh which I did quite enjoy till I got bored by lack of enemy variety which is something From does so well.

What is great about the series of FromSoftware is that if you like their games you get to play them every 2 years or so.

@Spanjard

I assume the guy with the bow on the roof is Genichiro at the top of the castle.

That's my favourite boss in the game. It's the point where you need to have mastered the posture system in order to survive. So that's probably what's holding you back. Everything before then can kinda be done with the Dark Souls approach of dodge and attack. But for Genichiro you need to master the posture system.

@Dezzy If I ever mastered it I have mastered it now; I was kinda surprised I got a few bosses and mini bosses the first try. TBF I never did follow up the fight after dying 3 or 4 times. I went exploring some other routes, which is something I like in this series, there is always something to do if you feel like you’re stuck.

I suddenly remember this dreadful boss which is actually the one which made me take a break lol. In one of those spooky caves there was this boss that used some kind of curse or something, really no idea how to beat that one. Maybe this time I’ll give some thought

That's Headless, he is pretty tough. You need Divine Confetti to damage the enemies that use the terror magic stuff.

You also need Pacifying Agent or the purple Gourd to counter the Terror status. You also need to deflect his attacks rather than normal block (deflect is blocking at the last second) to prevent the terror status building up.

@Dezzy Now I remember... I never like it when you need something for a fight, it makes you stress out for using said item of which you only have a few and will run out of forcing you to grind which is just a drag. The butterfly lady fight is a better alternative in which you don’t have to use consumables but it will make it easier(I just recently found that out and the battle was all the more epic for it)

You don't NEED any of them. They all make it a lot easier so you can beat him in the first half of the game. Otherwise he's gonna be a late-game difficulty boss.

JoyBoy

@Dezzy Good to know! I’ll return to him later. I did just make it to the 2nd stage of our mr. Bow boss on my first try, so I’m improving. Also, this run I figured out those pesky roof ninjas who just crush your spirit with their twisting blade techniques. Still fun that you can sneak kill most of them, but they are no challenge anymore.

There are 5 Headless enemies throughout the game btw. Lol.

@Spanjard I didn’t like fighting the headless enemies. I think I killed one of them and said “to hell with that” and just ran past the other ones in the game. That included NG+. Don’t feel too ashamed if you find the fights too tedious.

I did like the rest of minibosses though.

@linq I’m not sure about that. I don’t think it will be a next gen game.

There certainly were a lot of “hulking dude in armor and swords” stuff at the Game Awards. They went pretty heavy on the day-glo aesthetic though.

Ghost of Tsushima looked especially impressive after some of those games started to bleed together.

Well the only silver lining is that the first half of 2020 is insanely packed already. Whereas there's almost nothing announced for the second half of the year. Elden Ring coming out around July/August would be good.

Anybody looking for a companion? As of now I am at the Giant location. Also looking near Dukes. Anyone want to team up? (Switch)

Yeah, I didn’t find them fun. I skipped them all. Besides that, great game. I just beat it and it was awesome. I might do a rerun somewhere next year.
