... so you're saying that people can't have a negative opinion about a game unless they're in a position to earn more than it cost to develop the game in question? come on, man — that's pretty extreme, even for you up there on your normal 'i'm a journalist now shut up and listen to me' high-horse. if people were disappointed and didn't like it, they didn't like it. that's why they separate the 'user' reviews out from the overall score. that way the fans get to have their say, for good or for ill, and people who don't care what the average joe thinks can ignore it if they please.

I haven't played Mass Effect, but I believe that narrative was important to the game (I saw ME2 while my sister was playing it). If they're mad about the ending, then it seems like the series's strength of narrative was weakened and thus the disappointment. Although, people usually aren't the most constructive in writing reviews while they're angry.
EDIT: wow, just read more of the reviews, and some are being plain silly and unfair. Oh well, I guess most fell into the trap of reviewing while they're angry ^_^

It would be pretty extreme of me if that's what I actually said. Alas the complete failure for hyperbole to function in an online setting has got the better of me again.
What I was saying is that the problem with user reviews is that the people writing them don't necessarily understand publishing ethics. That's something that the critics do understand (at least, in theory. The games industry and games critics are often a different story, but that's a discussion for another day). If you're going to mess with the lives of a few hundred, if not thousand people, then you better be sure you're doing it for the right reasons.
No rational person would rate Mass Effect 3 (and a host of other games on both Metacritic and Amazon, and other places) that low. That's a collective vendetta that people have set out on.
All that would be fine if Metacritic didn't put user ratings so big and bold on its website. They take up almost as much room as the published review average score, so to a layperson, they're going to seem just as legitimate as the published review score.
While I completely agree with the idea that users should be engaging with websites, commenting, using forums etc, and that fulfils a very important role akin to a real life discussion group, I'm never going to agree with user reviews, unless there was a quality control or moderation process, because reviews are by definition a commercial function and can have very serious commercial consequences when abused. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that.

Don't forget about working harder on your rhetoric What? You sometimes miss the context in your rhetorical situations. It ain't easy establishing tone without creative word choice on the internet since we deal with mono-ish text and not voices. Plus, this is a gaming site :3

In my defense (though I agree with you, I struggle to get the exact argument across when it comes to srs discussion time), I typically frame debates using PowerPoint to highlight key points.
In conclusion, NintendoLife clearly needs PowerPoints.

therefore, if you liked it, everyone else who didn't is clearly just mad?

they're clearly marked, and at the top of the screen not only do they use a different shape, it's smaller. if people want to take user reviews into consideration, they can read through them on their own and make their own call; it's no different than asking opinions on a forum or asking a group of friends whether they liked something or not. to me it doesn't matter since that's not the thing I go there for, but if people want to express a negative opinion of something they've played, more power to them.

There's a lot of things we'll never agree on. This is definitely one of them. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised that you'd take the side of the devs and publishers over anything the people have to say, though.

I personally read both critics and user reviews across the net to get as much as i can from a game, without playing it myself. I don't think i have ever stuck with just one reviewer. I like many many opinions

I had a blast too! It's really fun solo but multiplayer makes it even better! We really owned that boss. =P
Im level 29 now. What level have you made it to? We should play this sometime during the weekday!!

I made a PowerPoint version of Super Mario Bros. 3 once. It was pretty amazing.
Do you still have it? I would pay money for that. PowerPoint + Mario is the nerdiest combination possible that is still awesome.
On a more on-topic note: Hyperdimension Neptunia mk 2 is... fan service in a tea cup. Kinda sad almost everyone is going to ignore it for that reason though, because the game is really very awesome.
did anyone but tales of graces F i think i am almost done with the game well i might have the whole F part to do i love this game so addictive but i still have to say abyss is my favorite
lol at the surprise that Raccoon City was a dud. Eh i'm still waiting for my hyper realstic zombie Game. Take World War Z with the Gameplay of I am Alive in a open world and we have a deal. Guess i should try dead island. Just don't want any of those Stupid Super Zombie's games have to have.
In other news Bioware is changing the ending to Mass Effect 3.
