Hey there is a bill in america called Bill S.978 that is supposed to stop people from posting copyrighted material online unless you get permission from the owners. It is meant for musicians, movies, and television material. The thing is the bill is so vague that if passed anyone who posts gaming stuff without permission for each thing posted can go to jail or get fined. You only would get 10 strikes and you would more than likely have to remove any material you already have posted.

Sorry for no link but look it up on youtube or just online. I will try to get links later.

I'm guessing the person that actually uploads it would get fined. Sounds a little harsh. They will never stop people from uploading stuff to the internet.

Well yes if the bill passes people will get 9 strikes then on the 10th either fined or jail time. If you have stuff now you will be okay but after if you keep posting you will get warnings than fined. The thing is that even though this is in america the bill is so vague that if you sing a copyrighted song and post it you can be in trouble.

That would be a pain to police.

Well they aren't gonna arrest 1 million people at once it's more like if you keep posting you can be in real trouble.

Well it was meant to make sure musicians, tv, and movies would get their money instead of people just posting it online and get it for free but it is so vague.

Does it affect everything video games?

Just for you.

@Kid_Crono Well this isn't a direct quote but it states that anything copyrighted that gets recorded and posted online will be in trouble. So people doing game reviews or let's plays or something like that can be in trouble. They would have to get direct permission from the companies for every video or picture posted.

Educate yourselves on the actual bill. It would require an economic loss by the copyright holder. Lets Plays would not (in theory) meet that standard. However, hosting sites like the 'Tube may be reluctant to allow such vids if the Bill were passed (which is not tremendously likely, as copyright protections have traditionally fallen in the civil, not criminal, domain). If you want to understand the content of the actual bill, stop reading internet fanboy reactions blogs and posts.

@Kid_Crono
Yep, it's a free country. Now excuse me while i walk into your house and take your TV. Oh wait, i can't do that? It must not be a free country then, right? /sarcasm

Yea well I am not trying to cause trouble but in theory if it passes it can be a big problem. You never know if it will pass but there is a letter you can fill out to send to your congressman to tell him to say no to this bill. I know bills take awhile to pass but this can affect individual people who post a video themselves.

I think Let's Plays and reviews of games will still be ok as they fall under the Fair Use Act. Basically if you put something copyrighted up with the intent to critique or review, you are allowed to do so.

Maybe but the bill is kind of vague and kind of undermines that act. Now this may not pass but congress people may not see how it will effect things

It's all good. No personal offense meant. It just always bothers me when people don't go to the actual source of things like this but instead just listen to the rantings of uninformed fanboys (not you — i mean the host of reactionary ignorants on the 'Tube and elsewhere).

Your suggestion for people to contact their congressmen is a good one. That's the only way they can know what their constituents think, and whether it's helpful or not, that is the way our process works.

Also, brooks83 is likely correct; Fair Use, Parody and other similar protections should not be affected.

Thanks I just wanted to inform my fellow gamers because even if it doesn't effect gameplay it still is kind of some concern. I just hope it gets a no or gets scrapped. It's just a little to vague.

Don't worry, the republicans will refuse to vote for it because they'll find a loophole on the three hundred and twenty fifth page of the bill that may possibly allow illegal immigrants to benefit from it, then the democrats will all run away crying and not vote for it, leaving it sitting there being a bill on capitol hill forever.

I love congress.

There aren't enough cops in the world to stop everyone. For every copyrited song, movie or videogame that get's deleted millions more are likely to be uploaded right after. It's a losing battle and foolish to think they can control it.
