there was an article i stumbled upon via the nintendo everything site today by kotaku: titled 'which japanese game companies will die in the next decade?' , it ranks developers who have 1 point or more a bigger chance of surviving the next 10 years, and those less than a point a lesser chance of surviving in 10 years:
as you can see, nintendo, namco bandai, capcom, sony and cree all have points; whereas tecmo koei (probably includes team ninja), SEGA, and square enix (of final fantasy) have zero points.
i'm a bit worried about SEGA going under- unless say nintendo buys a stake in the company. something none of us would have envisioned over 20 years ago, as they were arch rivals at the time. i like many of sega's franchises and to see them go out of business would be a huge blow to the video game market.
as for tecmo, they rely on ninja gaiden and dead or alive, although their games haven't been admired by many and square enix are a good company, but they rely too much on final fantasy.
Well there does seem to be a trend toward smaller independent game companies thanks to downloads really taking off, but don't think that means big name companies will die they'll just buy up some of those smaller companies like EA did with popcap I would think.
Layoffs and studios shutting down has been going on for years now. Midway to name one.
but its spiked due to higher development costs. Too many devs try to make AAA games when they could make AA games. weekend confrimed had a recent episoide touching on it.
WAT!
Hey check out my awesome new youtube channel shingi70 where I update weekly on the latest gaming and comic news form a level headed perspective.
That article was complete garbage. Hey, these companies might be going under in ten years based on an article in a Japanese tabloid magazine that I haven't even bothered to understand!

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
i guess you guys are right- that kotaku piece shouldn't be taken seriously and 10 yrs is a long time and anything can happen.
It's not from Kotaku. The article originated from a Japanese magazine that had conducted a sort of poll, asking people which gaming company they think would survive in the next 10 years.
