? We're Just discussing the game. When it comes down to something like characters, it's kinda impossible to please everyone, and it's impossible for a game to be objectively good in this area. So of course there's going to be a whole mess of opinions flying around

I was talking about how I said the game wasn't anything like the other games in the series (which was just a hunch because I've barely played the other games) and how you guys immediately and thoroughly corrected me. I didn't realize I was posting to a new page or I'd have quoted.

Oh, haha. Sorry Adam

Boy, the first two chapters were stupidly easy, and now the more fleshed-out battle system is taking some serious getting used to. By which I mean I died SEVERAL times attempting to beat the first boss in Chapter 3. I think it's retarded that the leader character isn't allowed to die, but the other two can and it's okay.

But I'm mostly enjoying the game. A little over five hours in, but I've been taking it kinda slow.

I saw a preview of this, what a joke.

I'm sixteen hours in and loving every second I spend with the lord and savior Final Fantasy 13.

Bacon, RPG elements and cute girls, what more could you want?

Remember aimlessly searching crates and barrels for items, and talking to People who essentially don't have anything to say?
I really enjoy the way it simplifies things and focusses on the gameplay, atmosphere and story.
Don't be fooled by trolls, it's a really really good game.

Yes, and good riddance to the latter half. If you don't have good dialog for NPCs, don't have them at all.

I enjoy those kinds of things from time to time, but no so much that I think FFXIII is worse off for removing them. The linearity of FFXIII simply strikes me as the next logical evolution of the linearity of FFX, and that game was AWESOME! Actually, at current, I still think I like FFX better. But that doesn't automatically meant FFXIII is bad!

Yeah...man, I'm gonna miss it. That was always one of my favorite aspects of RPGs. It always helped flesh out the worlds. You don't get that in other games.

Transformers meets Final Fantasy. O_o

@Mickeymac: Seems to me that there are quite a few people who agree with you on that one. FFXIII seems to have created a very noticable split in the fanbase.

I'm with you Mickeymac. I'd hate to enter a town/outpost/city/base etc and have the streets be basically empty (No More Heroes anyone?). I like having a bunch of people roaming around and dressed up in the "local flair". They may not have anything decent to say, but that's pretty much true with real life too.

Haha, but we wouldn't be playing video games if we were satisfied with only real life. There are a handful of RPGs where every line is a delight to read, but for the most part, in the average RPG (and almost every Final Fantasy game I've played) I find myself bored out of my skull wandering around town trying to find the person I need to talk to to progress the plot. The first Final Fantasy wasn't bad though since towns were small, NPCs in small numbers, and all their dialog had that nonsensical charm of your usually bad 8-bit era translation.

I played the game a lot more last night, and once more my opinion on just about everything changed, haha. I think Snow is the problem. The moment he's gone, all the characters begin to show more than one dimension to them. Hopefully when he returns they don't revert to the same boring, predictable personalities. Vanille is once again up there with Sazh as far as likability, and even Hope and Lightning are enjoyable to watch now that they have this little partnership going.

Combat is even more fun, too, and I finally feel like I have an effect on the battle. Only took four chapters, haha. I find the leveling system is fine. Everyone says it's very linear, but you have multiple roles to choose from and never have enough CP to max out all of them. Choosing which to focus on is interesting, and leveling up weapons brings up more decisions.

The one oddity I came across last night was this one area with lots of bomb enemies where I was playing as Vanille and Sazh. The music was really good but also really out of place. It's like they thought the track was so good that they'd just shove it in somewhere. It was especially odd when it was playing during dialog. Funny though.

I hope you eventually get to choose who's in your party. It's disappointing to see someone is with me but cannot be selected to fight. I would assume this is eventually an option, but no telling how soon this'll be as my party seems to be pretty far apart now... as far as I can tell. I have no sense of distance in this world. The story is confusing, and I haven't been able to follow it at all.

I got the game yesterday, and it's great so far. But I have to play more until I can decide if this is one of my favorite Final Fantasy or just another(good) game in the series.

I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on hari-kiri rock!!! I NEED SCISSORS!!! 61!!!

Stuffgamer1

@Adam: I haven't had any real trouble following the story thus far, but it sounds like you're further in than I (I'm saved at the start of Chapter 4). I do like the levelling system...it's an interesting blend of simplicity and strategic choices. It's got nothing on the Sphere Grid, but then what does?

I don't have the problems with the characters you do, though. Maybe I'm just more content with characters you see as shallow or something. I feel as though I can relate to Snow's feelings, which is a bit odd seeing as I've never even had a girlfriend. I am something of a romantic nonetheless, though.

The Datalog keeps track of the story pretty well. If you get lost, just read a few logs and you're back on track.

MINOR SPOILER AHEAD

They say you can freely change your party at chapter 10... which was a mayor complaint in some reviews.

Stuff, I don't have a problem with his feelings. But when he and Lightning fight, it's just irritating. I wouldn't even say it's unrealistic. But it's like Everybody Loves Raymond. Sure, there are people who stubbornly yell at each other all the time, but that doesn't mean it's entertaining. The moment those two are separated (which fortunately did not take long), they once again become interesting. I do find his romanticism and comic book sense of heroism goofy, but though it's a little embarrassing to watch at times, most of the time it's charmingly funny.

Though the level progression is somewhat linear, you do get to heavily influence how each character's stats turn out in what I would consider the midsection of the game (Implying that at the beginning you have less choice and at the end you cap out, obviously).

There are around 54 side quests and three (large) extra areas, the majority of which can only be completed post game just because of the crushing difficulty.

And frankly, I don't see how the levels opening up make it "just an illusion", in older RPGs (not to mention a lot of current ones), stats for characters max out at the same level all the time. In FF13, you get to influence your stats up until the stat cap. If anything, it's just as linear in that respect.

Also, about the game being linear. I'll be blunt - it is. Most people I know who have played it acknowledge that but disregard it because of the good story and enjoyable characters, not to mention the fast paced battle system.

I understand that your post only reflects things you've read on the internet, but in the future try not to tear apart a game you've never even played.

Ravange was just restating what he knew about Final Fantasy XIII, he wasn't necessarily tearring it appart.

And I know it's too early to be saying this, I still can't wait until Versus XIII comes out! It's supposed to bring back the overworld and towns, and it'll have a more modern theme to it! I love it already!
