Personally, I was fairly disappointed with Final Fantasy XIII. The story was good, and I loved the characters, but the game was terribly paced, despite the linearity. The battle system really wasn't much fun until a few chapters in, and then by Chapter 11 the difficulty jumped so high that battles just became a pain. Thankfully the weapon and character customization were interesting enough, but they didn't offer as many options as they could've. After sacrificing exploration, relying on such weak legs made the whole game fall apart on me. I got to chapter 12 and just handed it over to my brother to finish, and now that it's finished, I doubt I'll ever go back. It was all in the story and the spectacle, and neither left a truly lasting impression. I did like the wolrd Square-Enix set up, and I sure hope they continue with it, but they better not make another game like it.
I personally disagree. I've got no problem with the opposite style of RPG - the sandbox open world of an Oblivion, but FFXIII holds a special place for me because it is focused, linear, and all about the spectacle and storytelling.
The spectacle will only last so long, though. The scenery was beautiful the first time I saw it, the attacks looked cool the first time I saw it, the enemies seemed interesting the first time I saw them. By the 5th or so time, I didn't care anymore. A game that relies so heavily on visual and technical dazzle simply won't be able to hold up once a more impressive game is released (it won't take too long, either), nor does it leave any reason to ever play through it again, especially since the rest of the game isn't very interesting, either. The story is nothing that hasn't been told a thousand times, the characters are generic, and the gameplay relies just as much on spectacle as the rest of the game. Really, the more time that goes by, the less I like that game. I think I may actually like it less than Final Fantasy 6, and at least that game was good for what it was, it just wasn't something I wanted to play. I haven't been this disatisfied with a sequel since Kingdom Hearts 2, which held pretty much all the faults FF13 had and then some.
Some games are fun to be played once and put away. Replay value is great, but it's not the ultimate measure of all games. I don't think it's fair to criticize the technical dazzle of what is possibly the best looking game to date by saying that someday a game will look better.
I like this game...and I do agree of what it wrong with it but...that being said, I enjoy the mission aspect of the game and in some ways I hope they improve on the side-missions in the next game.
@Mickeymac: I do not understand people who have a problem with Kingdom Hearts 2. IMO, it was better than the first in every way. FFXIII, on the other hand, is FAR from being the best numbered FF ever, but it's hardly the worst, either. It's a matter of taste, certainly, and I'm really confused about your taste in RPG's. Sometimes we seem to agree, but usually not.
@Adam: It's fair a few years down the road, at least. With some games, the reason to play them decreases with time, and I agree this may be one such game. It's certainly not the only FF game like that.
I'm in the post-game now, and progress is frustratingly slow. It's relatively difficult to just power level and overcome the ridiculously hard battles, and it's REALLY tough to figure out what you SHOULD do in order to defeat the nastiest foes that hold the prizes you need in order to more easily defeat them (I hate catch 22's like that).
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
As I said, replay value is not the only value a game can have. I know that some day it won't be as impressive to watch, but that has no bearing on its value at this moment.
@Adam: Well, yeah...I think we're on the same page here. IMO, the replay value is further harmed by the insanely hard BS in the post-game as well.
@Relevant Latty: I think you mean 50-64, as there are 64 total in the game. At any rate, I've beaten up through 51 and also a few further along (part of the circle of Cie'th Stones in the Archylte Steppe, since some of them are easier, lower-grade battles). There are a few more I know I could handle, too. I'm currently stuck against the Gigantuar. I could handle him if it wasn't for all the damn Pain and Fog! I really hate how there are no accessories in the game that grant straight-up IMMUNITY to status ailments. All this percentage stuff sucks.

Ah yeah, sorry for the confusion...I must have missed the latter 2.
I'm stuck with that thing too...although I also hate the Neochu AND those Cie'th that cast multi spells on you (The hardest Cie'th Stone in the circle).
The easiest way to beat the hardest foes is to insta-stagger them....as it'd take you a mrer few ATB gauges to kill them if you have the accessories for them.
Oh, if you have a chocobo....do loads of Treasure Hunts....one of them is bound to become a Ribbon...not exactly immunity but it's the best for giving you resistance to all ailments by 30%...you can even upgrade it into a Super Ribbon if you have loads of gil.
I already have two ribbons, one from treasure hunting and one from a super-rare enemy drop (I forget which enemy). But that's exactly my complaint: They give 30% protection instead of immunity as was previously the series standard. LAME!
I also already 5-starred both Neochu battles using a team with Vanille in the front spamming "Death." Works pretty darned well! But you should've already known that, seeing as that very strategy is in your Sig.

Lol yeah but I don't want the battle to be laughably easy using Death...I want some strategy involved so I feel I've accomplished the impossible. XD
That strategy is only used for the Adamantoise.
I rarely use that formation lately...I tend to play it safe with COM/SAB/SYN to triple RAV these days. XD
A friend gave me a strategy for the Adamantoise that requires triple-RAV, as well as triple-SAB and SAB-COM-COM. It's complicated, and I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but he says you can get to a point where you can take down at least ten of the things per hour.

I found the enemy pretty easy when I took two down (and I was really lucky to get two Trapz both occasions).
The best thing you can do is use your summon to take out the legs (gaining TP is not really a problem for it) and Debuffing it like there is no tomorrow, once done, just get it to stagger ASAP....don't go into Gesault Mode as once the summon leaves apparently the time it takes for it to get up is reset again so you can attempt to stagger it whilst your summon is with you.
Once staggered either attack it crazy with triple RAV or triple COM (RAV gets the stagger to 999 whilst COM whittles the HP down more) or you can just use that Death move and hope for the best....
Personally, I'd recommend you get the Trapz before you finish the Stones in a circle as apparently the stronger versions replace the current ones and you can't face the somewhat "easier" ones again...
You can always fight the regular Adamantoise on Cocoon, at least.
The strategy you outlined is actually pretty much the same thing the friend said, but I've been distracting myself with other games too much to actually try it out for myself. I've managed to get two Platinum Ingots from Adamantoises, but no Trapezohedrons at all as yet.

That sucks, as the drop rate for those are apparently low...I must have been lucky then...
When you do get one, max out Vanille's Malboro Wand as once you dismantle it as a maces out Nirvana you get 3 Trapz for the price of one. Once you get another you basically do the same for that to have every character with Tier 3 weapons. Then you go to Vanille's house and talk to the robot for an achievement/trophy. XD
