Topic: Will Princess Peach: Showtime be the swansong for OG Switch?

Or will there be a more impressive standout exclusive between PP's March 2024 release and the release of the NG Switch? Although we do have Professor Layton and the New World of Steam as a Switch exclusive with a late 2024 release window. But Professor Layton is a second party (Level-5 owned, Nintendo published) game, which may or may not qualify for some people.

No.
PS4 is stilly almost fully supported despite that it's 4 years older than Switch and that PS5 is now 3 years old...
Why are so many people so stressed out that Switch is approaching to it's 7th birthday? Not every console needs a 5-6 years of life-cycle. Don't forget NES, Gameboy, PSX, PS2, PS4, NeoGeo which had 10 years or an even longer life-cycle.

Is it really impossible for it to co-existing along with Switch 2? Why must it die off immediately so fast when Switch 2 comes out?

Or that 3DS lived along with Switch for some more years and still got exclusives.

No,
Switch will like +5 years longer and still gets exclusives.
It indeed feels like that more and more are scared of that Switch actually will surpass NDS and PS2 now, that they wants to it die off right now.

My guess is that Switch will be starting slowing off during 2027-2028, perhaps during late 2026 as earliest then, but it's very unlikely.

@Keman Do note that lot of the PS4 1st party support in the PS5 era was a result of PS5 shortages. Spider-Man Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok were all intended to be PS5 exclusive but became crossgen when it became clear the chip shortage would cause havoc on PS5 supply. Sackboy and MLB The Show are the only ones that would've likely been crossgen in normal circumstances given that's how previous transitions worked (LittleBigPlanet 3 and MLB The Show 14-16 were PS3/PS4).

I think so, yes.

I'll definitely be getting it as I liked Super Princess Peach

Hot take, but Showtime really doesn't look that great. Seems sluggish and simplistic. Hope to be proven wrong, but I almost have to wonder if it's the one game on the schedule next year that isn't a remake or remaster so far because Nintendo doesn't have much faith in it and doesn't want to save it for the next console

I'm sure there will be more Nintendo games on the schedule next year we don't know about yet, although what is Switch-1 exclusive versus cross-gen will depend when the new console comes out. Arguably, as soon a new console with back-compatibility is even announced, most new games become cross-gen so the transition may be very blurry.

I'm getting it too, but it seems like a fairly different genre then Super Princess Peach. Peach games are not really consistent enough to be it's own sub-franchise yet like Yoshi or Luigi games although I hope Peach does become a full series in the future.

No.

There's still more to come, and in the history books, Tears of the Kingdom has a far better chance of being remembered as something of a "swansong" than a more niche title centred around Peach.

@EaglyBird I mean, very few people remember Wii U for BotW. I suspect there will be enough cross-gen this round, it will matter even less what's 'last'. In the far future people will remember BotW/TotK as a pair so will associate them with Switch, but Mario Wonder I expect may end up a bit more cross-console feeling - people will likely still actively be buying the game by the time the new console is announced, DLC may be advertised as cross-gen, if there is a Wonder 2 it will be on the next console, etc.

So I think people will remember TotK as late Switch but they may forget which console other late-Switch games arrived on.

I sure hope not. Switch is now indispensible

It depends on how you look at it. Will the Switch get any big exclusive titles after Showtime releases? Probably not. But it will likely have some cross games and get smaller exclusives for a couple years after the new system launches.

Be silly of Nintendo to not have cross-gen games.

@EaglyBird Also aside from the Wii and Wii U most Nintendo consoles still get some great send-off third party multi-platform games as well, and given that Switch is the best Nintendo console for third party releases since the SNES, I expect at least a handful of great third party releases on the OG Switch through at least 2026.

I don’t really care due to the size of my library and backlog but I doubt it. Granted switch has a lot of female users (of course anyone can play but target demographics are a thing) but I suspect Nintendo will want one more general/cross gen game. That being said if the successor is BC I think they will support both for the first year. To give their devs time to stack the deck. Lots of smaller but great games they can make.

The Swan Song of the Switch Era is the OLED it’s everything the OG Switch should have been right from the start. As for The game it should be Mario Wonder.

No. It's too small-scale to be a swan song.
Skyward Sword was considered the swan song of Wii, but there were several first-party games released after.
We'll also likely get a few cross-gen games, Metroid Prime 4 being quite likely.

Isn't Paper Mario 2 still coming out?

@EaglyBird I'd consider Kirby's Adventure to be a fitting swan song for the NES. That game pushed the NES to its absolute limit, plus the game came out in 1993, two years after the SNES came out in the US. I guess you could also consider Wario's Woods since it was the NES's last first-party game, but Kirby's Adventure was a much more ambitious game. That's why I consider it the NES's swan song.

@HenryKibble Yeah it's coming out next year.

@HenryKibble I don't think so. There's already a concrete release date for Princess Peach: Showtime (March 22), meanwhile the TTYD remake doesn't have a release date yet. This suggests that it might come out sometime after Showtime releases.

@HenryKibble By Switch's swansong, they mean the last major release for Switch. So like the 3DS' swansong was Pokemon Gen 7 despite plenty of games releasing afterwards.

My guess would be Prime 4 being the Switch's swansong.
