So folks at uni were rolling their eyes at me being optimistic about Switch for development (Granted im the only one who cares, gotta be at the forefront of new tech as they tell us).
Something tells me they, either based on what they were taught there (Sony partnered) or just on looking at Wii and Wii U, they dont think they can get stuff running well. But they cant get stuff thats basic in UE4 going well on gaming pcs in the labs so...not much reference.
I expect some custom engines will have issues because they are custom, and thats fine, itd be expensive and a fair chunk of work, but I am very optimistic if a game is made in middleware, we will get far less of the "technical difficulties" rhetoric.
Also, as a note, I saw a guy yesterday mention the perceived stock issues ofSwitch and how the numbers are still huge, but the artificial demand as a problem or cause is only ever routed at Nintendo. PS4, PS2, PS2 Memory cards (I remember that one...ugh), and hell PSVR, and Xbox One all ate up preorders fast. No one complained then, it was simply very high demand not very low stock.
I think Switch will do fine. Its already on track to get at least 1million out of preorders, if GameStop really did get 500k, so why cant the world congratulate them on making a product people want that is right now moving orders?
The gaming world baffles me bit.

Jim Sterling is spot on about the online service but I feel he really gets nitpicky about the presentation. Mario Odyssey looking like Sonic 06? Come on...
I don't think Rockstar and Nintendo will ever get along, I know they've done the odd game here and there on Nintendo consoles but they are never gonna be a happy couple.
Ah well. It's an idea for another game, either way. I've been wanting Nintendo to put sports front and centre in another game like Wii Sports Resort with an hub and interaction with others online for years. Maybe now's the time?
As for comparing Mario Odyssey to Sonic, I've got nothing, except I'd say the concept it more Unleashed than 06. Then again, I have no idea why people are comparing it 06 anyway.

I'll admit the juxtaposition of Mario and a city reminded me of Sonic, moreso Sonic Adventure than Sonic '06, so I can see why a comparison would be made. But it's not really a bad thing. Of all the things wrong with Sonic 06, it wasn't its city setting. And I very much doubt Nintendo would give us a Mario game even close to quality of Sonic 06.
I'm sure Jim just said it for a laugh. It just seemed particularly nitpicky as, of all reveals in the presentation, Mario Odyssey was perhaps the most universally praised.
I'd probably also call him out for Mario Kart - it's still a fairly recent game, will be packaged with all DLC, will include new content and new functionality in the sense that it's portable. Together that easily justifies the price tag. And I don't think rereleasing the best of the Wii U is reminding anyone how bad it was...
@Buizel, Yeah, I agree that Jimquisiton is a little more cynical than anyone should be; that's just his character. For example, he laughed at the idea of an account-based user system, but I think that if they're charging for online, they'll have to. If they didn't, I wouldn't pay for online even if I had just won the lottery. @Octane@Operative2-0, I was just taking the Switch Release Schedule infographic at face value. People have said it makes the first year look bad, but for fans of big exploration games, they've got a lot to choose from.
There's a famous quote about how using someone else's words to express you own isn't really expression which I'm not gonna quote.
I've expressed quite a bit of my own words on this site already, and there's nothing wrong with looking for other opinions to build upon my own. And I'm not about to present those ideas as my own without due credit.
Plus, I thought the blue pill/red pill shtick was kinda funny >.>
@scubydo, probably just a rumor. There definitely isn't anything confirmed.
@Spanjard I want a Switch, really I do. I am sold on the concept. It's just, Street Fighter 2, BombermanR amd TetrisPutopuyo sound like they are gonna cost me $150!!! THAT IS CRAZY!!! (Ofc, the prices may be place holders.)
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
I remember reading somewhere that for EA to release sports games apart from FIFA in a console, they wanted almost no competition from anything related that could steal its thunder.
I won't take it as fact, but if that's an important factor in whether or not you release a sports game on a console, then you have to question your ability to make enjoyable games.
I don't get this crud about the pricing. Honestly, I don't.
I don't care how small each JoyCon is, each one is still a full controller that is used to play the games. Each one still contains tech that needs to be paid for. 50 bucks for something that controls my game, includes NFC, gyro, object detection, HD rumble, strap that extends the controller, etc. is the same as a PS4 or Xbox controller that has less tech. You're literally getting more tech in the controller for the same price as what the competition is running, even the PS4's. People just whine because "they look so small." Yea, go tell that to your nearest jeweler - you want that diamond for a steal because hey, it's small, therefore it must not be worth a lot.
PS4/Xbox you got ONE controller at launch out of the standard box. Switch gives you TWO. I can buy a Switch standard box, day one, for 300 bucks plus cost of a game and have two controllers to play with my wife automatically. Xbox or PS4 I needed to shell out another 60 bucks to play anything with her on top of buying a game.
Consumers in the social media/internet age have gone off the cliff. Their expectations of goods are simply no longer reasonable. The Switch was doomed in pricing the moment it wasn't $200 with Joycons 20 bucks each. Also to bear in mind: the majority of criticism coming from those who have never held the controllers much less seen a Switch in person. Just a bunch of ME Me MEs shouting into the echo chamber.
I dunno about that. You need both joycons to get the equivalent of one ps4/Xbox controller. That is, two sticks, two sets of shoulder buttons. The price is whatever, but I certainly see where the annoyance comes from. Especially since there's stuff in there that's probably not gonna be used much, but will stay in and boost the cost anyway. Like the hand gesture thing.
@IceClimbers Why? Because Nintendo makes more money that way. I have no idea to be honest. I've asked the question myself too. It should've been $30, and they could still profit from it. Fortunately there are some cheaper alternatives; skywake linked me to an adapter that does the same thing in theory. I hope something like that works.
Geez Louise Nintendo. Well. I guess I don't need another dock anyway. And it is a step up from the wii u days where you had to get one directly from Nintendo if your gamepad failed. Even if it's expensive, at least you can buy the pieces you need or want without needing to go through them
