Zelda as the only good launch game is a disaster if they want to build early momentum (which is helpful to get 3rd parties on board asap).
Most Zelda fans are probably Wii U owners already. So what's the incentive to upgrade? I probably won't get one until both Mario and Xenoblade are out. Just no reason to. Zelda on Wii U and then the PS4 will keep me busy for another year until they have a bigger library, and hopefully a price drop.
Looks good so far. Little interest in any of the launch games besides Zelda, so I may hold off on getting one. I can live with the battery life. There's always an electrical socket or USB port somewhere (there's no way I'm taking this thing outside).
The games that have been shown are a bit of a mixed bag. I really wish that Nintendo would move on from their obsession with casual games. Mario Odyssey was the highlight of the presentation personally.
My only real complaint is the memory. I was worried it would be garbage and unfortunately, Nintendo delivered in that regard. You know how fast you can fill that up with just updates alone (never mind the fact that devs love to do these day one updates just so they get games released on schedule)? SD cards aren't a bad option, but the larger ones can get pricey (unless you want to keep track of a bunch of smaller SD cards). Oh well I guess.
Jesus is the only way.
It's OK to have an opinion. This ain't the Soviet Union you know. Letterboxd Youtube Channel
If it officially supports 64GB cards? It's SDXC and will support 2TB cards. Technically the 3DS only officially supports 32GB cards for the same reason. They're not doing anything here, they're just following the official standard. And the best current official standard "only" supports upto 2TB cards... which don't exist yet....
For the 256gb one it's $100 more.SD cards are fairly cheap in Thailand,I can get a 32gb Sandisk Ultra SD card for about $6,I'm sure I can better that Amazon price for the 200gb by at least $15.
I really wish that Nintendo would move on from their obsession with casual games.
The only title they showed that was casual was 12 Switch.Arms certainly isn't casual.Anyway, every company needs to make games like that,Nintendo as a hardware developer more so than most to try and expand their audience.Plus it's not something they've only done in the last few years, they made and published games that could be considered casual since back in the NES days.
@OorWullie
Well based on current trends 2TB SD cards should be available in some form by around 2020. And by then 500GB SD cards should be about as cheap as 128GB cards are now. Which seems like a while but it's also only a few years away. It would be about the middle of a traditional console cycle if the Switch follows it.

Is it me, or are there no bundles available at launch? For example when the PS4 launched, you could buy the player edition which included PS4, Killzone, PS4 Camera and an extra DS4 controller. I know that bundle was not exactly cheap, but it still represented a saving when compared to buying all of the above separately. I just find it strange that there are no hardware bundles to entice more early adopters.
I really should stop reading the articles and comments on Eurogamer,it's depressing,It's put a real damper on my hype and now has me thinking we are in for another Wii U situation.Arms really should have been there at launch, even if it launched bare bones with the promise of more free content coming like what happened with Splatoon.Ubisoft lack of an appearance other than a few seconds in the sizzle reel was surprising, they're always there at launch with something new.The pointless sections with Sega and Suda 51 are perhaps telling of how desperate the 3rd party situation really is.It could be facing a real uphill battle to recover from this initial reaction.
I've kept quiet so far, trying to make up my mind about the presentation and what I think about the Switch but I think my thoughts are now clear.
The presentation itself was good. It was slow at first but picked up some pace after Arms. The translation was good for the most part but some of the translators sounded really bored/tired and it was downright painful to watch when one of them couldn't keep up with Suda. I wanted to see more games though. I'm not sure why they decided not to include Mario Kart, Bomberman, indies, etc. other than in sizzle reels.
Now for the games:
1-2-Switch: Not interested. There are some fine ideas but it would work better as a WarioWare game. So far seems to lack content since the games last less than a minute each.
Arms: Might be fun but I'm not much of a fighting game guy. I need to see more. I hope there's enough content.
Splatoon 2: I should be more excited than what I am. I absolutely loved Splatoon. I'm sure I'll be more interested in it once I see a bit more. I'm afraid of the online play cost.
Super Mario Odyssey: Looks like a lot of fun. Shame it's not coming until winter. Gives me some Sonic vibes thanks to New Donk City.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I like the original Xenoblade. I started playing it last year but stopped halfway through and since I haven't played all the way through, I haven't been able to start Xenoblade Chronicles X. So, I'm currently not interested but I'm glad it's there so I can pick it up once I'm done with the other games.
Fire Emblem Warriors: I like Fire Emblem but I'm not interested in the whole Warriors thing. It's the next logical step after Hyrule Warriors and I know there are a lot of people who want this game.
Dragon Quest games: I'm willing to buy DQXI if it comes here. Not interested in Dragon Quest Heroes or DQX.
Shin Megami Tensei: I like SMT games. I bought my first SMT game a year or two ago and picked up two more since they're constantly on sale on the eShop. I haven't finished any of them yet. I'm sure I'll be buying one for the Switch.
Project Octopath Traveler: Looks great. It's from Bravely Default team and I absolutely loved Bravely Default so I'm certainly getting it.
Skyrim: Maybe. I haven't played it before though I apparently have it on Steam.
No More Heroes 3 or whatever it's going to be: I'm in.
Fifa: Good to see that Switch is getting some sports games. Not interested in them myself though.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: I think this one is kind of self explanatory. I'm getting it when I buy the Switch.
As for the games they didn't show at the presentation, I'm interested in Disgaea 5, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Snipperclips and Super Bomberman R.
Now the thing that kills it for me though. The launch lineup, price and paid online services. So far the launch seems to be quite shallow. I'd like a couple more games to choose from. The price for the Switch ($300) is fine though I'd like to have a game with it like Wii and Wii U had. And the price for Finland hasn't been decided yet. So far the price seems to be 400€ but all the online retailers say that it's still going to change. I'm hoping it'll be 300€ once it's decided. Paid online is fine as long as the price for it is small enough. I liked how Nintendo had free online for a long time. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to play online since for some reason I can't play online on my 3DS and Wii U even though I can access the eShop and other things fine. I'm glad there's no region locking.
I calculated how much I'd be paying for the Switch and decided to wait at least until summer since the launch ain't that great anyway. When I added the price of SD card (128 GB, I currently have 64 GB on my 3DS), Zelda and a carrying case on top of the console price. I'd be paying over 400€. That's just too much for now.
@OorWullie
I think as I said earlier, the online reactions are polarised. You're saying you see stuff like that on Eurogamer and you see a bit of it here also. But I was reading the comments section under an IGN video of all places and it was pretty positive. Over on a PC tech enthusiast forum they were equally pretty hyped about it. So it's a bit odd.
I really can't work it out TBH. I think maybe some Nintendo fans are still a bit bitter that the Wii U and 3DS are on the way out. They're annoyed that the games we're getting are Wii U games. Probably the only group where that's even an issue. And I guess some of them are getting worked up over the idea that they're not going to "win the console wars" because it's not trying to be a PS4/XBOne.
But the people who are just into tech more in general and the mass market? They see a tablet device that can play actual games. At a price that makes sense for a tablet device. With games that they can't play on their PC/PS4/XBOne. Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Kart and some weird party games that look like something from the Wii era. So it's interesting because it's different.
With the Wii U nobody cared before launch. Nobody really talked about it except for Nintendo fan sites. They were all far more interested in what Microsoft and Sony were going to do. And when they did eventually get around to talking about the Wii U? It was only to say it was doomed. Frankly the Switch's story so far is nothing like that.

@OorWullie People who dwell on forums like us aren't necessarily reflective of the world at large. Also not sure how the Suda51 section was pointless. A new No More Heroes game was announced, though that's very much in early development. As for Sega, I have no idea what the point of that was when they had Puyo Puyo Tetris and Sonic Mania they could have announced.
@OorWullie Steep could've been a big thing during the presser, that's a recent game (just over a month old), a lot newer than Skyrim for sure. But just like Skyrim and Minecraft, it won't be there at launch, which I don't understand at all.
@IceClimbers "Pointless" was probably a bit harsh but I imagine the vast majority watching will have had no idea who he or Travis Touchdown is,so listening to him talking about a game that's so early in development there is nothing to show yet just came across a bit desperate.it probably should have been announced it was coming after the presentation ended or in a future Direct. The bad translation didn't help how it came across either. Then there is EA,surely they could have done more to help,FIFA is crucial but if they really wanted to help the Switch become a success they should be doing more than just waiting to see how it goes.Aye it's Nintendo's responsibility to make the Switch a success but considering EA's role in the industry they have a responsibility too.
@skywake Yep,it seems to be one or the other.I think no matter what Nintendo came out with, the over reaction would be the same really. If they released a beast on par with the Pro or Scorpio for $400 they would be slammed for copying the competition and being overpriced, basically DOA. If it was $200 it would be laughed at for being a cheap gimped console that cant be taken seriously. Instead they've gone with something in between. It's a real impressive piece of kit, possibly the most modern and sleek Nintendo machine for it's time. It's un-Nintendo-like yet very Nintendo-like at the same time if that makes sense haha.It deserves to be successful and is in the industry's best interests for it to be but it seems the vocal internet masses and much of the main stream media will severely hamper its chances. You're definitely right about the difference between this and the Wii U,I can't remember really any positivity around that machine pre and post launch.
Oh, so earlier today I got asked about Mother 3; maybe you can ask me about Metroid. Look, again, I am proud as an executive with Nintendo to say that we look at all of the boards and all of the comments and we really have a good understanding of what our consumers want. And believe me, we take that to heart as we work to create content.
So I have nothing to announce--here. But we are aware that there are some key IP that consumers just can't wait for the next true installment in that franchise's legacy. Suffice it to say, we're aware of it, and talk to me in a year and let's look back and see what's happened.
@Octane It was a bizarre decision. It's also a real shame its not there for launch,it would have complemented that launch line up nicely. It would have had a lot better chance of being successful too as it's still new and will appeal to many who have fond memories of 1080.Instead it'll come in at $60 6 months late when it's already under $30 elsewhere.
I've stopped looking at most parts of the Internet, other than Nintendo fans sites, for the reasons that'll I'll likely come away depressed. It's been a rollercoaster couple of days with my thoughts around the whole Switch.
Starting 4am when the conference began in was super hyped but within an hour I was really down, and the lack of sleep that night before another day at work didn't help. In fact it wouldn't be until late Friday night that I certainly started to be more positive thinking about the Switch.
Sure the pricing in the UK is outrageous considering a simple Google tells me $299 converts to just under £250 not the RRP £279.99. And yes accessories are just as insanely priced as the US. And of course other than Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, I still can't place any pre-order for Switch games on Amazon. I don't trust Game enough to use their site.
And to be fair, perhaps surprisingly for the site, IGN of all places are actually pretty damn positive about the Switch. They're normally the opposite when it comes to Nintendo. And being a big site like them can do a lot to help. Eurogamer are unfortunately just being overly critical, but then again Tom Phillips who's the resident Nintendo fan, oddly didn't write the articles so that may explain that.
I'm actually now really looking forward to getting the system day one along with Zelda, Bomberman and maybe Snipperclips but it's digital so it can wait.
I'm definitely feeling this system is talking to a lot of retro fans out there. Make no mistake, Bomberman and Street Fighter II is definitely deliberately aiming at lapsed Nintendo fans and those who've perhaps "grown out" of gaming but still have fond memories of early 90s Nintendo. And I get that same feeling through Super Mario Odyssey with it being more of the 64 and Sunshine vibe. I'm hoping other retro games follow with new entries.

That would go hand in hand with the way the system looks. It is a much more grown up looking console than what Nintendo usually produces. Targeting adult consumers with what you said in mind would make sense.
