@Octane does it matter at this point what Mario game they show in the video? I may be being a bit bold by saying this I dunno but I bet this system will get both a 3D AND a 2D Mario game within its 'lifespan', in all probability in the first year to year and a half, like even the Wii U easily managed. We're getting a 3 minute video that will show the system playing BoTW and a Mario game, regardless of what happens as many people have pointed out it's been years since NSMBU/NSMB2 and SM3DW and it's even been well over a year since Super Mario Maker. You will get your Mario games on your Nintendo system both 2D and 3D and Kart and sports and Party and whatever else they plan. I think I can safely say that much.

@Shinion Of course, but the launch line-up is important. That will most definitely be a key factor in the number of launch sales, and in turn, support for the system. And despite the fact that NSMB has consistently good sales, I think that a 3D Mario is able to drum up more hype for the system than ''another'' NSMB could at this point.

@Octane that is definitely a good reason but I would rebut by saying that I think it would be silly to have both of the big boys at launch. I mean, barring Metroid which isn't anywhere near as big as the hardcore fans of that series think it is whag other headline grabbing game(s) will Nintendo have for the rest of 2017? Pikmin? Another censored Donkey Kong? Wii U ports? Splat2n? I'd think all of those are likely but Nintendo spoke about learning lessons from the Wii U and their lineup of games should be near the top of things to rectify, a 3D Mario carrot that they can dangle during E3 and have for the end of the year 6/7 months after the system's launch makes the most sense to me.

2013 really was what made the Wii U situation irreparable, if they had Mario Maker, Splatoon and Smash/Mario Kart available to show off and release sooner than they did I dare say the Wii U might've even managed to push beyond GameCube numbers, cause once they were promoting said games the Wii U ship had long since sailed.

That's why I think timing will be important, they can't afford to give too much too soon and expect yet another censored Donkey Kong to tide people over during the big selling periods and they can't afford to wait too long either obviously.

Frankly if the launch lineup includes Zelda:BotW? It's already better than most launches in terms of software. I think we can all agree that after the 3DS and Wii U they need to have a stronger launch lineup. But really, a stronger launch lineup? BotW, 2D Mario and a few forgettable titles would be better than their previous launches. BotW, 3D Mario and Pikmin 4 or something would be insane.

@Shinion Timing is indeed key. You don't want to front load your system, but you don't want an empty launch window either. Revealing a 3D Mario doesn't mean both will be launch games you know. Maybe Mario will be a holiday 2017 title and its reveal is solely based on getting the hype going for NX. Maybe it's a May title. Or maybe Zelda isn't a launch title, cause it's still listed as ''2017''. I don't think that a Zelda game and 3D Mario duing the reveal would hurt the system. It would actually do the opposite, ensure confidence that Nintendo is going to support the system, more than Wii U. The fact that one of them isn't a launch title is a moot point then. Still, as long as Smash and Mario Kart don't launch on the same day, then I think they'll be fine, especially if there's a few months in between Zelda and Mario.

I could see it happening, whether it will happen is another question entirely. Only 3.5 hours to go. We'll know it soon.

@Shinion It's worth noting that Nintendo has actively separated the release dates of Mario and Zelda games to avoid making consumers choose between one or the other. It's one of the main reasons why I think we'll see BotW around launch and the new Mario game a year from now.

Great observation. But then have we ever had a a Mario and Zelda game release at the same time?

If we're talking about what they'll talk about for launch and what they'll talk about that's further down the road. I posted a list of stuff they talked about in the pre-launch Wii trailer a couple of pages back. Just to show how much can be crammed into a ~3min video. If you break that list of games down by when they launched?

Launch games in the E3 2006 trailer:
Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, WarioWare, Excite Truck, Red Steel

Within the year:
Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy

A longer wait:
Pilotwings (it became Wii Sports Resort), Wii Music (not actually shown but referenced)

So I wouldn't be surprised that if they show games some won't be launch games. If they're showing 4 games in the reveal? I'd expect either two or three of them to be launch titles. But that's if they show any games. I'm expecting maybe Zelda and one other game in this trailer if that.

@MarcelRguez yeah I agree with that reasoning, I know it's hype and all to go 'ZOMG MARIO AND ZELDA AT THE SAME TIME IN MY VIENS' but the reality is that Nintendo virtually never bundle a system with a Mario/Zelda tier game, at least at launch, so you're gonna be asking for more than $100 more out of everyone cause let's face it who isn't going at get both of those games with the NX. I know I for one even though I'm not getting it at launch am hoping for a break between games because as controversial as it might be to say but Nintendo's famous 'software droughts' haven't bothered me personally. I have several big Wii U games that I still have to get a lot of mileage out of without even mentioning my PS4/Xbox One. Not everyone is as hardcore as some deem is necessary to enjoy games, and I wouldn't like to be in a situation where I'm playing catch up right away, especially when you consider how big BoTW will be on its own.

Space things out you know? I prefer it that way.

To be fair, if that rumour about the Mario game not running properly is true, then I don't think it's ready for launch in March to begin with. Zelda and Pikmin 4 are more likely I think. Pikmin 4 has been in an ''almost ready'' state for over a year now.

Now that's an idea! Pikmin 4 would be widely welcome at launch.

In regards to Mario, it might be or it might not. It all depends on how far into development they were at the time

@MarcelRguez From what I've heard, Arzest is developing the new Pikmin for 3DS and it's not Pikmin 4 (otherwise it would've been called that). I don't think Nintendo ever confirmed this, but the gameplay and art style is close to what Arzest has previously made with Yohi's New Island. I think that Pikmin 4 is still its own game. Originally planned for Wii U, but moved to NX. That's my best guess.

@MarcelRguez You mean the footage from the Japanese site? At first I thought I saw more foliage, but I could be wrong. Looks the same to me. Then again, I don't expect the NX version to look any different.

You're right though, I don't believe that Nintendo ever confirmed the devs behind Pikmin 3DS, we don't know whether it's Nintendo themselves either. I'm not surprised if it's indeed Arzest (or some other dev team). It's definitely not Pikmin 4, that's for sure.

Oh god! They unblocked youtube in my computer at work.... Since I work in a little corner, I'll be able to watch this live. This rocks!

If I had to guess, I'd assume we'll get a reveal trailer and a Direct announcement to a more "in-depth" reveal of the console and its games

Grandpa_Pixel

@MarcelRguez For the sake of being sure, I compared the website footage with the trailer, there doesn't seem to be any graphical difference. Foliage is still the same as well. Colours are not as bright as in the E3 trailer, but that's probably due to the different lighting depending on the time of day. Other than that, they look the same to me.
